Gab es im Verlauf ethisch-moralische, rechtliche, religiöse oder gesellschaftliche Einwände? War es möglich, ein ganzes Volk zur Mittäterschaft und sei es durch Unterlassung, zu bewegen? In der Schlussbetrachtung geht es um das Zusammenwirken der unterschiedlichen Faktoren, die zum jahrelangen Massenmord der verschiedenen Minderheiten beigetragen haben. Abschließend geht es um die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse aus der Zeit des Naziregimes und die Frage, was sich in Folge dieser für Sozialarbeiter*innen und die Angehörigen anderer sozialer Berufe im heutigen Deutschland verändert hat.

Damit gehen folgende Fragen einher: Wie ist Widerstand der sozialen Arbeit zu definieren? Was waren die Motive für diesen Widerstand? Kann "Soziales Handeln" als Motiv bezeichnet werden? Wie stark war dieses Motiv quantitativ und qualitativ ausgeprägt? Was bedeutet das für die heutige Soziale Arbeit? Bereits in den letzten Jahren der Weimarer Republik wurde eine eugenische Neukonzeption der Fürsorge in Deutschland angestoßen. Dieser Ansatz erwies sich als kompatibel mit dem Leitbild nationalsozialistischer Gesellschaftspolitik. Daraus erfolgte die nahezu vollständige Abkehr von o.g. "sozialem Handeln" im Sinne von Alice Salomon, hin zu differenzierter Fürsorge, in der die Wertigkeit des Individuums für die Volksgemeinschaft, der Bewertungsfaktor für Unterstützung bzw. Hilfe wurde. Diese Ein- bzw. Unterordnung der Fürsorge, unter die institutionalisierte Rassenhygiene, sollte Fragen, Zweifel und Widerstand passionierter SozialarbeiterInnen hervorgerufen haben, vor allem jener, die nach den Theorien damaliger PionierInnen der sozialen Arbeit geschult und ausgebildet wurden. Wer den Mut und die Haltung zeigte und nach diesen Grundsätzen handelte, ging mehr oder weniger in den Widerstand und ging ein hohes Risiko ein, bis hin selbst das Leben zu verlieren. Die Abschlussergebnisse eines wissenschaftlichen Projekts von Ralph Christian Amthor, das in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Deutschen Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen in Berlin 2012/2013 durchgeführt wurde, und das der Frage nachging, ob es SozialarbeiterInnen gegeben hat, die Widerstand gegen die NS-Diktatur leisteten, belegt den Widerstand von zirka 60 Personen aus dem Bereich der Sozialen Arbeit. Es ist erkennbar, dass Widerstand gegen das NS-System nur in quantitativ geringfügigem Ausmaß vorhanden war.

Mittlerweile ist die Phase des Nationalsozialismus und der aus deren Herrschaft resultierende Zweite Weltkrieg sowie die von den Nationalsozialisten angeordneten und begangenen Verbrechen an der Menschheit in jedem Geschichtslehrplan der Mittel- und Oberstufen inkludiert. Für Personen, welche durch Bildungsinstitutionen, Fachliteratur und die Medien über die nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen und Handlungen aufgeklärt wurden, scheint bei oberflächlicher Betrachtung kein Platz für Berufe und Handlungen, welche der Sozialen Arbeit zugeordnet werden können. Dennoch ist unumstritten, dass auch Soziale Arbeit im Dritten Reich stattfand. Dies wirft die Frage auf, mit welchen Rahmenbedingungen die Beschäftigten der Sozialen Arbeit konfrontiert wurden und wie Soziale Arbeit im nationalsozialistischen Herrschaftsregime praktiziert wurde.
