And Elt (george Eliot, to o) to see us off. We all appreciated Elt's waiting over a day just for that, tho' it must have been a sad farewell for. Him. There Was comfort for us in numbers. Once started, I busied myself writing letters to Harvey, Brookes, Hugs, and Elt until, when I came on deck, we were passing the Ambrose Channel Lightship. We sat in out chairs or strolled about the rest of that after; noon, and before dinner adjourned to our staterooms to get ready. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Boy's Vacation Abroad, 1906: An American Boy's Diary of His First Trip to Europe This book is the result of a promise which I made to my father. He told me that if I would be good at school and catch up in my studies, and also if my brother Cabaniss was good and caught up in his studies, and I would agree to write a complete diary about my trip and write it every night, he would take me with him on his vacation to Europe. And so this book is the result. When I was sitting up nights, tired and weary after a day's hard sightseeing, trying as best I could to fulfil my promise, writing in my diary, I never once thought that it would be made into a book for the public to read. I wrote it because I had made a promise to father and because he wanted me to write it. I thought it would be a good keepsake and that I could refer to it in the years to come and recall the pleasant times I had on the trip. Book excerpt: 2012 Reprint of 1953 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. An invaluable guide to the art and mind of Virginia Woolf, "A Writer's Diary" was collected by her husband from the personal record she kept over a period of twenty-seven years. Included are entries that refer to her own writing and those that are clearly writing exercises, accounts of people and scenes relevant to the raw material of her work, and finally, comments on books she was reading. The first entry is dated 1918 and the last, three weeks before her death in 1941. Between these points of time unfolds the private world - the anguish, the triumph, the creative vision - of one of the great writers of our century.

Book excerpt: National Book Award–winner Timothy Egan turns his historian's eye to the largest-ever forest fire in America and offers an epic, cautionary tale for our time. On the afternoon of August 20, 1910, a battering ram of wind moved through the drought-stricken national forests of Washington, Idaho, and Montana, whipping the hundreds of small blazes burning across the forest floor into a roaring inferno that jumped from treetop to ridge as it raged, destroying towns and timber in the blink of an eye. Forest rangers had assembled nearly ten thousand men to fight the fires, but no living person had seen anything like those flames, and neither the rangers nor anyone else knew how to subdue them. Egan recreates the struggles of the overmatched rangers against the implacable fire with unstoppable dramatic force, and the larger story of outsized president Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot, that follows is equally resonant. Pioneering the notion of conservation, Roosevelt and Pinchot did nothing less than create the idea of public land as our national treasure, owned by every citizen. Even as TR's national forests were smoldering they were saved: The heroism shown by his rangers turned public opinion permanently in favor of the forests, though it changed the mission of the forest service in ways we can still witness today. This e-book includes a sample chapter of SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER.

Book excerpt: Classic Speedsters: The Cars, The Times, and The Characters Who Drove Them chronicles the most significant vehicles ever to have traveled American roads and racetracks. Speedsters were the pizzazz cars of their era. Speedsters were owned by entertainers, captains of industry, the wealthy, and in some cases, the everyday guy or gal. They were often expensive, but always fast and sexy. Speedsters were America's first sports cars. Each chapter frames the birth and evolution of a company that produced a speedster model in its lineup and includes a biography of a famous owner of the period. This book traces the journey of the speedster concept across several time periods and among twelve automotive companies. It answers three fundamental questions:· Why were these cars so important and influential?· Why did so many prominent people own them?· What message do they have for modern design?

He then goes on to describe his times as teacher and researcher at Southampton, Reading and Rutgers Universities, and the origin and evolution of the Reading School of International Business scholarship. Along the way, the author shares some of his many and varied consultancy assignments and travelling experiences, offering some insights into his personal values and home life in Henley-on-Thames and Cornwall. This remarkable book gives a unique personal insight into the life and work of one of the most influential figures in the study of international business. It will no doubt prove a fascinating read to all those with an interest in the field and its development and especially to those who have benefited from the work of one of its great thinkers and scholars.

This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Making of a Marchioness + The Shuttle (2 Unabridged Classic Romances)" contains 2 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Frances Hodgson Burnett worked on two books simultaneously: The Shuttle, a longer and more complicated book; and The Making of a Marchioness, which she wrote in a few weeks and published to good reviews. it is about the rejuvenating effects of Americans and American money on a somewhat decadent English aristocracy. The Making of a Marchioness (1901) It was originally published in two parts: the first tells the fairy tale-like story of how our heroine, Emily Fox-Seton, became the Marchioness of Walderhurst. The second, originally titled The Methods of Lady Walderhurst, is a down-to-earth portrayal of the realities of Victorian marriage, with a bit of a Victorian sensation vibe to it. The Shuttle (1907) It was begun in 1900 but frequently abandoned while its author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, wrote several other books, including, most famously, The Making of a Marchioness. The Shuttle is about American heiresses marrying English aristocrats; by extension it is about the effect of American energy and dynamism rejuvenating a somewhat decadent English aristocracy: Rosalie Vanderpoel, the daughter of an American multimillionaire marries an impoverished English baronet and goes to live in England. She all but loses contact with her family in America. Years later her younger sister Bettina, beautiful, intelligent and extremely rich, goes to England to find what has happened to her sister. She finds Rosalie shabby and dispirited, cowed by her husband's ill treatment. Bettina sets about to rectify matters... Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849 – 1924) was an English-American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular Little Lord Fauntleroy , A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden.
