Book Synopsis Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine by : Max Krott
Download or read book Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine written by Max Krott and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine provides a thorough analysis of the key factors in the transition process affecting the forest sector in the eponymous countries. Moreover, it designs new strategies for sustainable development in these areas. The book attempts to strengthen selected trends in the forest sector in each country so that they may gradually achieve sustainability and create a market economy. The key factors are identified by making use of several different sources: scientific papers, interviews with experts from the three countries and the personal experiences of the co-authors living in the countries. The strategies propose new and interesting options for improving forest management by optimizing forestry within closed production units. Further strategies deal with reorientation of forest planning, transition oriented labor management and acquisition of resources for forestry from state and markets. Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine also gives new insights into the political factors and informal strategies within the forestry sector. It serves as an important addition to existing economic market models and will draw attention to the political process driving the transition. This information is helpful to both experts in economics as well as foresters in the field as it gives them an understanding of the complexity of building up a market economy by transition.
Book Synopsis Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Forestry in Central Europe by : Ewald Rametsteiner
Download or read book Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Forestry in Central Europe written by Ewald Rametsteiner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current developments in Central Europe will have far-reaching consequences on the region’s forestry and related institutional arrangements, such as forest administration, extension services and forest research. Future prospects for the rural population living on income from forestry will considerably depend on how individuals and organisations react in view of these changes. It will be vitally important how forest owners and managers apply new knowledge in forestry and how organisations best deal with the emerging changes. Innovation and entrepreneurship are main driving forces for economic growth, competitiveness and employment creation, especially in rural areas. From 2001 to 2003, the EFI Regional Project Centre INNOFORCE conducted research on innovation and entrepreneurship in forestry in Central Europe, seeking answers to the following questions: What is the situation and perceived future outlook for forestry in the region? How important are innovation and entrepreneurship considered in the sector? How much innovation and entrepreneurship is actually taking place? What are supporting and impeding factors? The research report provides new knowledge on innovation behaviour of forest holdings and forest related innovation systems in Central Europe and on changes that are necessary to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship in the sector. Survey results are accompanied by lessons learned from more than 30 cases referring to innovations in forestry implemented in eight countries.
Book Synopsis Development Cooperation Policy in Forestry from an Analytical Perspective by : Peter Aurenhammer
Download or read book Development Cooperation Policy in Forestry from an Analytical Perspective written by Peter Aurenhammer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any reader eager to gain a comprehensive insight into forest development policy, praxis and reality shouldn’t miss this excellent publication. Hard to find a comparable reading where the author is digging as deep into Forest Development Policy. The author discovered numerous highly relevant theories as well as inspiring cases about forests and people from around the world, focusing on ‘change’ rather than ‘development’ and on the role of various actors in creating or preventing ‘change’. The exciting results uncover reality and lead to inspiring discussions on concepts of development cooperation. All individual theoretical arguments and empirical proofs are well based and shed light into the political process of Forest Development Policy. The book is an essential contribution to scholarly debate and research on forestry in the South, and its relations to development cooperation, for both, readers with theoretical and practice related interests.

Book Synopsis Innovation in Forestry by : Gerhard Weiss
Download or read book Innovation in Forestry written by Gerhard Weiss and published by CABI. This book was released on 2011 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation in Forestry Territorial and Value Chain Relationships Edited by Gerhard Weiss, Davide Pettenella, Pekka Ollonqvist and Bill Slee Innovation is increasingly recognized as a key factor in environmental protection and sustainable development in forestry and forest-based industries. This volume provides a comprehensive theoretical foundation for the analysis of innovation processes and policies in a traditional, rural sector as well as presenting empirical analyses of innovation processes from major innovation areas. Innovative solutions are analysed in wood-related value chains, including timber-frame construction, furniture, bio-energy and forest transportation. Territorial services of the forest sector are examined, including various types of forest ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, non-wood products and recreation. Innovation in Forestry is essential reading for researchers and policy makers in forestry and environmental sciences.
Book Synopsis Reforesting Landscapes by : Harini Nagendra
Download or read book Reforesting Landscapes written by Harini Nagendra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has seen the beginnings of a great restoration effort towards the world’s forests, accompanied by the emergence of an increasing literature on reforestation, regeneration and regrowth of forest cover. Yet to date, there is no volume which synthesises current knowledge on the extent, trends, patterns and drivers of reforestation. This edited volume draws together research from leading researchers to explore reforestation and forest regrowth across the world, from multiple dimensions – including ecosystem services, protected areas, social institutions, economic transitions, remediation of environmental problems, conservation and land abandonment – and at different scales. Detailing the methods and analyses used from across a wide range of disciplines, and incorporating research from North, South and Central America, Africa, Asia and Europe, this groundbreaking book provides a global overview of current trends, explores their underlying causes and proposes future forest trajectories. The first of its kind, the book will provide an invaluable reference for researchers and students involved in interdisciplinary research and working on issues relevant to the biophysical, geographic, socioeconomic and institutional processes associated with reforestation.
Book Synopsis Study on Progress in Implementing the EU Forest Strategy by :
Download or read book Study on Progress in Implementing the EU Forest Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to help build a knowledge base for the review of the EU Forest Strategy that was adopted by the European Commission in 2013. The EU Forest Strategy addresses 8 priority areas that were identified as being particularly relevant for forests and the forest-based sector until 2020. These priority areas address: (i) support of rural and urban communities, (ii) competiveness and sustainability of the forest-based sector and bio economy, (iii) forests and climate change, (iv) protection of forests and provision of ecosystem services, (v) information on forests and how they are changing, (vi) innovation and value-added products in forestry, (vii) coordination and cooperation in forest issues, and (viii) the global dimension of forests. The analysis shows that the EU Forest Strategy plays a central role as key reference document addressing forest-related priorities as well as fruitfully stipulating information exchange and coordination. It does so mainly within sectoral boundaries. As regards rural development, the Common Agricultural Policy funds for forestry measures are a key instrument for supporting sustainable forest management and the objectives of the EU Forest Strategy. These rural development funds cover a wide range of forestry measures, where implementation is subject to national priorities and the uptake of funds varies. The area of fostering competitiveness of the sector is amply addressed in the EU Forest Strategy. An increased coordination of the forest-resource sector and the forest-based industries is promoted to gain a competitive advantage in a bio-based economy. Climate change is high on the political agenda. The focus on mitigation is currently considerably larger than the one on forest adaptation and resilience to ecosystem changes due to changing climatic conditions. Conservation and protection of forest ecosystems is a broad topic with a variety of activities. Implementation of ecosystem service schemes are still in their infancy. Recently, the Natura 2000 implementation has undergone a fitness check. Forest management plans incorporating biodiversity aspects appear as key instruments, but are implemented in varying forms. Renewed political commitment to enhance coherence with socio-economic objectives, funding and stakeholder engagement will be important to mediate between multiple forest-related goals and objectives. The implementation of a harmonised EU forest information system is lagging behind. A new bottom-up process with member states is being established, which is seen as instrumental for future forest data provision. Actions on the innovation potential and related research activities can be judged as significant. Yet, it will require clear strategies for capitalising and disseminating their outcomes, as well as further activities for knowledge exchange and coordination. Finally, activities on the global dimension of forests are progressing significantly, including Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT), Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), and the EU Timber Regulation. More actions to safeguard coordination of EU and Member States’ activities hold promise.
