Accurate prediction and evaluation of fatigue performance are crucial to extending the service life of asphalt mixtures. Naturally, laboratory testing methods for fatigue characterization are time-consuming and require sophisticated procedures. Any effort to improve the speed and quality of the information gained from laboratory fatigue tests is valuable. This research work presents the results of a study investigating the possibility of implementing a new approach to characterize asphalt mixture fatigue behavior. This new approach includes cyclic tests run on cylindrical asphalt specimens in three-point beam mode (herein referred to as three-point bending cylinder (3PBC) geometry). Timoshenko beam theory along with the viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) theory was implemented to model the mechanical response of the specimens. An excellent correlation between the results of 3PBC tests and uniaxial push-pull fatigue tests were observed. The 3PBC setup possesses the most advantages of uniaxial push-pull tests and includes more advantages such as not requiring a saw to cut the ends of the sample, not requiring gluing operation (and the gluing jig) and the possibility of estimating Poisson's ratio from the data. The proposed 3PBC approach was evaluated through laboratory tests conducted on various asphalt mixtures with varying binder types, mix components, and volumetric properties. The approach proposed herein was validated through finite element analysis. In addition, ruggedness evaluation of the 3PBC testing approach through varying factors and their levels were investigated and presented.

The TRB IDEA (Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis) Program's NCHRP IDEA Final Report for Project 218: Development of Three Point Bending Cylinder (3PBC) Asphalt Mixture Fatigue Test System developed a new test method called the "three-point bending cylinder (3PBC) test." The primary benefit of this test method is that sample preparation and testing times are shorter than typical fatigue tests (auch as four-point bending and uniaxial fatigue) and the test fixture is easy to operate and inexpensive

Book excerpt: The main objective of this study was to develop a new test that would be simple to conduct and analyze for evaluating resistance of asphalt mixtures to fatigue cracking. For this purpose, a piece of equipment known as the Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test (HWTT) was used. HWTT has been widely accepted as a reasonable and reliable test to evaluate the rutting and moisture damage performance of asphalt mixtures but its use for evaluating fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures is relatively a new concept. Its use as a fatigue test is advantages over current laboratory fatigue tests because of the possibility of considering various underlying support layers when the specimen is subjected to repeated loading. Ability to assess the asphalt mixture fatigue resistance in a layered system under repeated loading and in a laboratory environment provides the opportunity to integrate material design and pavement structural design for optimum performance. In addition, this test is practically feasible as a routine test method in terms of reliability, equipment availability, and data processing efficiency. The tests were conducted on a two-layer structure with the asphalt concrete slab as the top layer and the neoprene or an unbound aggregate base as the underlying layer. Based on the numerical analysis, a width of 6 inches was selected as the optimum width for this study. However, the experiment also included the 4-inch width for comparison. The thickness of the slab was selected at three levels: 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 inches, with the 1.5-inch thickness being the main thickness applied to most of the slabs. In an asphalt pavement structure, the surface layer is often designed at a thickness of 1.5 to 2.0 inches. These tests were based on strain amplitude growth corresponding to three defined stages during the test (Early, Middle, Late). The impact of several factors on the test results was investigated. Those factors included the slab width and thickness, the underlying support type and condition, temperature of the test, the speed of tracking, and the type of asphalt mixture. The experiment showed that as the slab thickness become smaller, the strain amplitude and its corresponding growth rate become larger, exhibiting a relatively higher rate of fatigue damage. Using the unbound aggregate base proved to be challenging because of difficulty in achieving a smooth, even surface. A smooth surface was required to ensure proper bond of the gauges and collection of the data. Using synthetic rubber neoprene provided a smooth base and delivered a more reliable dataset compared to the aggregate base in this study. As expected, temperature played a significant role in the experiment, as a higher initial strain amplitude was observed at elevated temperatures. A higher strain and increased strain growth rate were observed at lower loading speeds. After determining the appropriate dimensions, temperature, and underlying support, tests were conducted on six different asphalt mixes. Strain development was monitored at the bottom of the slab for each mix. From the data collected, a new fatigue life model was developed to evaluate the fatigue performance of asphalt pavements when tested under the conditions explored in this research. The fatigue life in this model is defined as the number of HWTT load cycles at which the strain amplitude doubles, or equivalently, when the stiffness is reduced to half. This determination is made under the premise that the test operates in stress control mode. It was found that the rate of growth in strain amplitude during the test increased considerably when the binder content in the mix was decreased, validating the importance of ensuring adequate binder content in the asphalt mix. The SMA mixture demonstrated a higher rate of strain amplitude increase compared to the dense-graded mixtures. The mix with 35% RAP content and a PG 64-22 binder delivered lower growth in strain amplitude compared with other mixes. The IDEAL-CT test was also performed to draw comparisons. However, based on the outcomes, it showed no correlation with the results of the newly developed fatigue test. Based on the growth of strain amplitude throughout the test, a fatigue life model was developed. The fatigue life can be determined using this model, based on the number of cycles, with a criterion of either a 50% reduction in stiffness or a doubling of the strain amplitude. Finally, a numerical model was developed, and the observed strain response demonstrated that this model is capable of predicting both the type of response and the magnitude of strain amplitude with relative accuracy.

Book excerpt: Mechanistic-empirical flexible pavement design procedures proposed for use within the 2002 Design Guide require the input of the dynamic modulus (E*) of hot-mix asphalt concrete. In addition, the E* test has been proposed as a "simple performance test" for use in mixture design and construction quality control. The objective of this study included conducting the dynamic modulus test, evaluating the accuracy/variability of test results, and constructing master curves for the mixtures tested. The hotmix asphalt mixes tested in this research are typically used for pavement construction in Arkansas, and binder content and air voids were varied to simulate typical construction variability. The analysis showed that the variability of the average dynamic modulus for each set of four replicates was acceptable. Since the dynamic modulus tests were run at intermediate temperatures in this study, a modified procedure, using Arrhenius and power functions, was employed to construct the master curves. Based on the master curves, the effects of aggregate size, binder content, and air voids on the tested asphalt mixtures were evaluated and determined to be consistent and reasonable. The testing procedure and results of this study were recommended for use in a new project to characterize the stiffness of Arkansas mixtures to prepare input data for the proposed 2002 Design Guide.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this project was to develop and verify the overlay tester (OT) based fatigue cracking prediction approach in which the OT is used to determine fracture properties (A and n) of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures. This approach was developed based on fracture mechanics. However, not only was the fatigue crack propagation characterized by Paris' law fracture concepts, but the crack initiation described by traditional fatigue model was also included in this approach. In this approach, the fundamental HMA fracture properties (A and n) were used to estimate fatigue life of asphalt pavements including crack initiation and crack propagation.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue performance modeling is one the major topics in asphalt concrete modeling work. Currently the only standard fatigue test available for asphalt concrete mixtures is the flexural bending fatigue test, AASHTO T-321. There are several issues associated with flexural fatigue testing, the most important of which are the stress state is not uniform but varies over the depth of the specimen and equipment for fabricating beam specimens is not widely available. Viscoelastic continuum damage (VECD) fatigue testing is a promising alternative to flexural fatigue testing. Different researchers have successfully applied the VECD model to asphalt concrete mixtures using constant crosshead rate direct tension test. However, due to the load level limitation of the new coming Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT) testing equipment, there is an immediate need to develop a model that can characterize fatigue performance quickly using cyclic test data. In this study, a simplified viscoelastic continuum damage model developed at NCSU is applied to various North Carolina mixtures, which are used in the NCDOT HWY-2007-7 MEPDG local calibration project. It is shown that the simplified VECD model can predict fatigue tests fairly accurately under various temperature conditions and strain levels. It is also shown that the model can be further utilized to simulate both the strain controlled direct tension fatigue test and the traditional beam fatigue test. In this thesis, simulation results are presented. Conclusions regarding the applicability of the new model are advanced as well as suggestions for further work.

Book excerpt: This dissertation has two key objectives: the first objective is to develop a method of predicting and quantifying the amount of water that can enter into a pavement system by vapor transport; the second objective is to identify to which extent the fatigue crack growth of pavement would result from such moisture accumulation. To fulfill these two objectives, a diffusion model was first established to illustrate the wetting process of the surface asphalt layer due to the vapor migration from subgrade soil into the upper layer. Secondly, in order to quantify the degree of moisture damage induced by water vapor diffusion, fine aggregate mixture specimens were fabricated and conditioned at different levels of relative humidity in closed vacuum desiccators that allows little temperature fluctuation. Moreover, the moisture conditioned specimens were tested using a newly developed repeated direct tension test method to evaluate the fatigue crack growth. The RDT test greatly reduced the stress state complexity within the specimens by evenly distributing stress over the cross section area of the cylindrical specimen. Compared to the previous torsional test, the newly proposed test protocol was more efficient in characterizing the moisture susceptibility of the asphalt mixture. A major finding in this dissertation is that the higher level of RH in as asphalt surface layer will induce significantly higher crack growth rates. Book excerpt: The focus of many asphalt mixture design procedures over the past 10 years has led to the development of stiffer, drier mixtures. However, these mixes are more difficult to construct and are potentially more prone to reflective cracking. In this research the upgraded overlay tester is introduced and proposed as a simple performance test on reflective cracking. The overlay tester can be run on standard size samples, typically 6 in (150 mm) long by 3 in (75 mm) wide by 1.5 in (38 mm) high. These specimens can be prepared from either field cores or from Superpave Gyratory Compactor (SGC) molded specimens. The test is rapid and repeatable, and poor samples fail in minutes. It characterizes both crack initiation and crack propagation properties of asphalt mixtures. Based on repeatability study results, three replicates are recommended for the overlay tester. Sensitivity studies indicate that the overlay tester provides reasonable test results. Increasing asphalt content will significantly improve the reflective cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures. In a series of tests on Texas mixtures, it was determined that aggregate absorption has a major impact on the performance of specimens in the overlay tester. This topic has not received much attention recently but it obviously needs to be investigated. In the lab these highly absorptive aggregates did not severely impact the rutting performance but they had a major impact on cracking life. The effectiveness of the overlay tester was validated by five case studies in Texas. The overlay tester results all correlated well with the field performance. Furthermore, the overlay tester results have good correlations with beam fatigue test results and low temperature performance of asphalt mixtures in the field. A preliminary framework of asphalt overlay mixture designs and associated criteria have been proposed. Based on the framework, two examples of asphalt overlay mixture designs are presented in this report. This framework and the associated criteria are preliminary and they will need further refinement. Finally, a brand new overlay tester has been manufactured and delivered to TxDOTs central lab at the edar Park office. In addition, training for the operation and analysis has been provided.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current test methods for measuring fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures involves many steps which are time-consuming and costly. On the other hand, asphalt binder and mastic testing are less time consuming and more accessible to practitioners than mixtures testing. Therefore, if the routinely measured properties of asphalt binders, fillers, and volumetric parameters of asphalt mixtures can be used to predict cracking resistance of mixtures, the effort to perform mixtures testing of asphalt mixtures can be minimized. The objective of this study is to develop prediction models for cracking and damage behavior of asphalt mixtures using the stepwise regression method at intermediate temperatures from limited laboratory testing of binders and mixture volumetric properties routinely done in practice. In the first phase of this study, the effects of physical and chemical properties of fillers on fatigue of asphalt mastic are measured using LAS test are measured. Then prediction models of Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) parameters of the mastics are developed using the physical (Rigden Voids-RV and Fineness Modulus-FM), chemical properties (Calcium Oxide and Methylene Blue) of the fillers, and the LAS parameters of the binders. The results show that the fatigue cracking resistance of mastic is dependent on the interaction between base asphalt binder and filler type. The results also show that the effect of fillers on the fatigue life of mastic is dependent on the failure criterion used in the analysis of LAS test. It is also found that the fatigue cracking resistance (LAS Parameters) of mastic can be predicted reliably from Rigden Voids and LAS parameters of binders. In the second phase of the study, prediction models of cracking resistance of mixtures as measured by the Semi-Circular Bending- Illinois Flexibility Index Test (SCB-IFIT) are developed using an experimental database including 44 mixtures that are short-term-aged and 30 for long-term-aged mixtures. These mixtures are produced with varying combinations of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), binder, aggregate sources, and fillers. More specifically, models for the SCB parameters (Flexibility Index (FI), post-peak slope, and Fracture Energy (Gf) models are constructed using various independent variables such as asphalt content, asphalt film thickness, aggregate gradation, RAP content, LAS parameter of binder and mastic properties. A sensitivity analysis is performed to access the impact of these independent variables on SCB parameters. Based on the correlation and validation results, the developed models of SCB parameters are found to predict the FI, post-peak slope and Gf of asphalt mixtures with high accuracy. The developed models are recommended to use for estimating the fatigue cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures when testing is not feasible or as an initial step for selection of mixture designs and binder grades before mixture testing.
