Book excerpt: The development of a radically new type of successive approximation, analog to digital converter employing the rapid and accurate exchange of charge between several capacitors is described. The method makes possible a startling reduction in number of circuit components, total power consumption, size and weight. Furthermore, the technique offers added performance capability with regard to accuracy and speed. Two experimental units were constructed and tested. These units provide 10-bit resolution, 18181 encodings per second, 200-kc bit rate, NRZ output, fullscale input of 0 to +5 volts, input impedance of 1 megohm, inherent sample and hold, continuous operation, or encode upon command. The units use only 45 transistors, require only 6.3 watts from the power supply, and have a volume of only 125 cubic inches and a weight of 3.25 pounds. Recommendations are included for several extensions of the development program to provide higher speeds, with further simplification, military prototype design, lower power consumption, and an unusual multiplexer based on capacitive charge transfer. Book excerpt: The integrated circuit, 10-bit A-D converter was placed in operation under typical test conditions and the performance evaluated using the Fairchild recycling analog-to-digital converter calibrator. Operating at its internal clock rate (525 kc, which yields about 16 musec per bit) the converter produced all codes monotonically from 0000000000 to 1111111111 with approximately equal bit intervals. The performance characteristics are listed. The goal of the development effort, to make maximum use of integrated circuits, was possible and desirable in the logic circuits, and an integrated linear amplifier was used in the comparator module. Other circuitry was constructed using cordwood techniques. Advances in integrated-circuit technology since the beginning of this development effort have indicated that it may be feasible to make further use of integrated circuits particularly in the area of ladder switching. The trend and rate of advancement in the field of integrated linear amplifiers indicates that a unit may be available within the next year, which could perform the function of an input buffer amplifier. It is conceivable that performance of this converter could be improved, particularly the speed of operation. (Author).
