Book excerpt: As advances in technology allowed national and state education assessments to be administered digitally, many school districts transitioned to computer-based instructional programs and assessments to improve student achievement and better prepare students for high-stakes computerized assessments. One such rural public school district in Mississippi implemented a supplemental web-based instructional program, i-Ready, for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year. The purpose of this study was (a) to investigate the effects of the i-Ready program on student achievement in Grades 4 – 5 reading/language arts and mathematics and (b) to determine if there were significant differences in growth (from pretest to posttest) among performance levels of students in Grades 4 – 5 on the 2017 state assessment in reading/language arts and mathematics. A quantitative research design using existing data was used to conduct the study, and the paired-samples t-test provided the primary means of analysis for research questions one and two to determine the effect of the i-Ready program on student achievement. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used as the primary means of analysis for research questions three and four to determine if there were significant differences in growth among students across Performance Levels 1 – 5. The results from the research study showed the i-Ready program had a positive impact on student achievement in reading and math for Grades 4 – 5. No statistically significant differences were found in student growth among the performance level groups indicating all students were impacted by the program. Recommendations for future research include: (a) conducting longitudinal studies to determine long-term effects of participation in the i-Ready program, (b) analyzing methods of implementation by classroom teachers, (c) measuring i-Ready’s predictability of proficiency and growth on state assessments, and (d) conducting studies of other online instructional programs using control groups.

Book excerpt: This book provides math teachers and those who work with them with a comprehensive and practical resource for planning and implementing alternative assessment in the classroom. Drawing from his own experience working with teachers at several grade levels in a variety of settings, Gerald Kulm offers hands-on guidelines for assessing student understanding of procedures, concepts, and problem-solving, including advice on developing and interpreting assessment tasks, assessing individual and group mathematical activities, using scoring rubrics, developing student portfolios, and more.|Kulm provides specific tips and ideas for getting started and simple ways to adapt math activities and problems for assessment. He includes numerous examples of student products such as puzzles, projects, problems, interviews, and group activities that can allow for individual differences in learning and productivity.|Kulm also offers a section of frank teacher-written summaries that provide firsthand insights into what worked and what did not. The range of types of classes and assessment goals described in these summaries make it easy for nearly any teacher to find a situation similar to that of their own class and adapt the strategies that were successful.

Book excerpt: Design is a central activity within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Within enacted practice, design can feature within intended learning outcomes, for example in learning to design, and it can feature within pedagogical methodologies, for example by learning through design. Often holding differing disciplinary interpretations such as design as cyclical problem solving, iterative design, conceptual design, or design with or without make, understanding the educational merits of the ill-defined and open nature of authentic designerly activity is paramount. This Research Topic sets out to gain a more nuanced understanding of the value and role(s) of design within STEM educational contexts. This Research Topic focuses on design within STEM educational contexts, particularly in terms of teaching, learning, and assessment. The aim is to contribute to the evidential basis which can be used to guide the incorporation of design into educational practice. The topic has two central research objectives. The first is to generate evidence regarding what design is in STEM education. For example, is the ability to design a singular or manifold construct? Is the capacity to design, or are factors of this ability, both learnable and teachable? How transferable is designerly knowledge between contexts? How do different disciplinary contexts influence the interpretation of design? The second is to further our understanding of how best to incorporate design within STEM education contexts. For example, how much emphasis should be placed on learning to or through design in school? How should design be assessed within formal education? Where and when is design best incorporated into education? In posing these questions, the goal of this research topic is to provide scholarly discourse which supports critical reflection and the challenging of assumptions regarding design in education.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remedial mathematics courses are often taught at post-secondary institutions in response to the substantial number of students entering college who lack the skills and motivation necessary to be successful in college level mathematics courses. Much of the research on remedial mathematics instruction shows that it has been only moderately successful in improving the students' achievement in mathematics or their attitudes towards mathematics (Adelman, 1995; Burley, 1994; Wieschenberg, 1994). The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of web-based computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and traditional lecture-based instruction in a college remedial mathematics course. The remedial mathematics course was taught to two groups of college students, which included a treatment group that received CAI, and a control group that received traditional lecture instruction without the use of computers. The ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) web-based software program, was used in conjunction with lecture-based instruction for the treatment group. Mathematics achievement and student attitudes towards mathematics were assessed by means of pre- and post-tests administered at the beginning of the semester and again at the end of the semester. Student withdrawal rates and passing rates for the course were also compared for the two groups. The statistical analysis of the data compiled in this study included the use of paired and independent group t-tests, analysis of covariance, and z-tests. The paired t-test results showed that there were statistically significant achievement gains within the treatment and control groups as a result of the instruction that each group received. However the independent t-tests and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in achievement gains between the two groups when the study ended. The paired t-test results on the attitude assessment showed no statistically significant difference within each group after the study was completed. In addition, the independent t-tests and the ANCOVA results showed no significant change in attitudes between the two groups when the experiment had been completed. The z-test analyses also showed no significant difference in the withdrawal or passing rates between the treatment and control groups.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the impact of the supplemental online math instruction and intervention program TenMarks.com on student achievement as measured by assessment scores in a school in California's Central Valley. Sixty-three students from two different fifth grade classes participated in the study. Both classes were taught by the author. The scores on the standard curriculum chapter test and Ten Marks.com post-test of students who supplemented their in-class instruction with Ten Marks.com were compared to the scores of students who did not use Ten Marks.com during the course of the study. The results found no statistically significant difference in chapter test scores from the standard curriculum. However, significantly higher achievement was found on TenMarks.com post-test scores for those who used the online program.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has proven that teachers have a fundamental influence on student results. Moreover, effective teacher professional development is one of the key mechanisms for improving student achievement. By the most recent OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) definition, "Professional development is defined as activities that develop an individual's skills, knowledge, expertise and other characteristics as a teacher." The [email protected] program suits this definition both in terms of increasing teacher subject knowledge and in terms of providing math teachers with alternative solutions and methods for presenting usual contents. Given that the effects of any professional development program on student achievement are mediated by teacher actual practices in the classroom, it is necessary to verify whether teachers enrolled in the [email protected] program do follow the training, whether they apply the acquired knowledge in the classroom, and whether they change their attitudes and teaching methods. The study will address these issues by collecting information through specific questionnaires and the teacher's [email protected] log-book. The difficulty in measuring the effectiveness of teaching is that "teachers have powerful effects on reading and mathematics achievement, though little of the variance in teacher quality is explained by observable variables, such as education or experience". The study rules out issues resulting from hidden heterogeneity by designing ex ante a randomized experiment, which allows the authors to compare the results of two statistically equivalent groups of participants in the most objective way possible. (Contains 2 figures and 2 tables.).
