This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 56 million acres of Indian lands in the lower 48 States, and 44 million acres of Native corporate land in my State of Alaska, Native Americans have an enormous potential to contribute to the energy and security of this country. Tribal lands are estimated to contain 10 percent of the Nation's conventional and renewable energy resources. This is likely an understatement because Federal geologists are typically very conservative in their assessment of energy resources. Over 15 million acres of Indian lands with energy resources have not been developed. For instance, the Crow Nation has an estimated 3 percent of the United States coal resources, exceeding 9 billion recoverable tons. As gas prices continue to soar and unemployment ranks high throughout Indian Country, we should continue to encourage and empower tribes to responsibly develop their energy resources.

Book excerpt: The editors have assembled 15 articles by experts which examine the problems of this country's energy policy, and the confusion which surrounds the issues. Beginning with the crisis of 1970, the articles selected discuss current energy issues, what policy attempts have been made to solve them, and what the future implications of such policies might be. The book explores the complexity of energy in many contexts: global and national, political, economic, and intergovernmental, to name a few. Articles also touch on alternative and nuclear energy issues.
Book Synopsis Developing Estimates of Potential Demand for Renewable Wood Energy Products in Alaska by : Allen M. Brackley
Download or read book Developing Estimates of Potential Demand for Renewable Wood Energy Products in Alaska written by Allen M. Brackley and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with the existing volumes of renewable wood energy products (RWEP) currently used in Alaska and the potential demand for RWEP for residential and community heating projects in the state. By using peak prices from the fall of 2008, the potential value of a British thermal unit (Btu) from various fuels has been calculated to identify those situations where wood-based fuels are economically competitive or advantageous when compared with alternative fuel sources. If fuel oil prices increase to the levels experienced in 2008, there would be a strong economic incentive to convert heating systems to use solid wood fuels. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find report.

Book Synopsis Alaska's Rural Development by : Peter G. Cornwall
Download or read book Alaska's Rural Development written by Peter G. Cornwall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social, economic, political, and cultural concerns surrounding the development of rural Alaska. The authors explore the controversy over rural development from a variety of perspectives-some supporting economic development and its implications for rural communities, others arguing for alternative approaches. They raise the issues of external control over local development and the effects of the boom-and-bust cycle often associated with rural change. Part 1 surveys the economic development of Alaska's resources, providing an historical overview of its fur, timber, and fishing industries and examining the current importance of oil, gas, minerals, and agricultural products. The section concludes with a discussion of the unique patterns of trade between Alaska and Asia. The second part turns to the organizations that have been, and are presently, the major vehicles for development-the village and regional corporations that grew out of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 and the non-profit organizations responsible for social services and education. The authors also discuss the increasingly important role of governmental institutions. The final section considers the conflict between the goal of economic development and traditional Native values of subsistence and cultural preservation. The authors ask whether the development of Alaska's rural regions must take place at the expense of the traditional lifestyle and cultural distinctiveness of Native society.
