Book excerpt: Excerpt from Developing a Group Insurance Plan for Employees of Cooperatives Many farmer cooperatives already have adopted group insurance plans for the benefit of their employees. Others have become interested and are seeking information about them. Most managers of cooperatives that have tried group insurance consider its beneficial effects well worth the cost. They say that it helps an organization attract and hold competent and experienced personnel. They also report that it encourages the employee to feel that the cooperative is interested in his personal welfare, thus bringing about a better relationship between employees and the association. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retirement Plans of Farmer Cooperatives The self-administered trust type of plan is best suited for larger cooperatives. It is not an insured plan. Usually an employee retire ment plan consult-ant helps develop it and makes the necessary actuarial calculations. Four cooperatives in this study were using the self-administered retirement trust. They felt that it was somewhat more flexible and had some advantages for the larger cooperatives. The group permanent is a newer type plan than either of the other three. It includes some of the features of both the individual annuity contract and the group annuity. It is expected that the use of this type plan will increase. Regardless of the type plan used, certain basic provisions need to be considered in development of retire ment plans. They include: (1) Eligibility requirements, (2) normalretirement age, (3) amount of pay ment to be provided, (4) employee contribution, and (5) past service. Most farmer cooperatives make their plans available to all employ ees after they have reached a designated age and have served from 1 to 5 years. Practically all plans use 65 as the normal retirement age. This coin cides with retirement under Social Security. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its heyday, the United Farm Workers was an embodiment of its slogan "Yes, we can"-in the form "S, Se Puede!"-winning many labor victories, securing collective bargaining rights for farm workers, and becoming a major voice for the Latino community. Today, it is a mere shadow of its former self. Trampling Out the Vintage is the authoritative and award-winning account of the rise and fall of the United Farm Workers and its most famous and controversial leader, Cesar Chavez. Based interviews conducted over many years-with farm workers, organizers, and the opponents and friends of the UFW-the book tells a story of collective action and empowerment rich in evocative detail and stirring human interest. Beginning with the influence of the ideas of Saul Alinsky and Catholic Social Action at the union's founding, through the UFW's thrilling triumphs in the California fields, the drama concludes with the debilitating internal struggles that effectively crippled the union. A vivid rendering of farm work and the world of the farm worker, Trampling Out the Vintage is a dramatic reappraisal of the political trajectory of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers and an essential re-evaluation of their most tumultuous years. Winner of the 2012 Hillman Prize in Book Journalism.

Book excerpt: This book explains how postwar Japan managed to achieve a highly egalitarian form of capitalism despite meager social spending. Estevez-Abe develops an institutional, rational-choice model to solve this puzzle. She shows how Japan's electoral system generated incentives that led political actors to protect various groups that lost out in market competition. She explains how Japan's postwar welfare state relied upon various alternatives to orthodox social spending programs. The initial postwar success of Japan's political economy has given way to periods of crisis and reform. This book follows this story up to the present day. Estevez-Abe shows how the current electoral system renders obsolete the old form of social protection. She argues that institutionally Japan now resembles Britain and predicts that Japan's welfare system will also come to resemble Britain's. Japan thus faces a more market-oriented society and less equality.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
