This book was released on 1967 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid diffusion coefficients for systems approximating gas chromatographic sample -- liquid phase systems were determined by using multiple internal reflectance infrared spectroscopy. An expression for the diffusion coefficient as a function of the change of concentration with time was developed from Fick T s second lav; and Jost T s treatment for diffusion into a slab. By using cell covers designed for this project (for FMIR solid sampling cell) and by turning the spectrophotometer (Infracord) on its side, it was possible to measure the change of concentration of solute (fed as vapour in carrier gas) in a layer of solvent with time spectrophotometrically and to thus determine the diffusion coefficient of the solute- solvent system. The systems used in the project included those of different solutes in fluorolube and acetone in solvents of varying viscosities. An attempt was made to qualitatively evaluate the data by correlation with known values and values expected from empirical expressions. The results indicate that this method provides qualitative values for diffusion coefficients with main errors due to the preparation of the solvent layer.

Book Synopsis A Determination of Diffusion Coefficients for Gaseous Systems at Various Temperatures by : Roger A. Strehlow
Download or read book A Determination of Diffusion Coefficients for Gaseous Systems at Various Temperatures written by Roger A. Strehlow and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport property which is most fundamentally related to forces between unlike molecules is the ordinary diffusion due to concentration gradients. Unfortunately, this property and its dependence upon temperature have not been systematically studied experimentally, with the result that the literature does not contain the data necessary to obtain good force constants for the introduction of unlike molecuels. The present work describes an experimental method for determining diffusion coefficients, based on the variation of thermal conductivity with composition in binary mixtures which is capable of being used over a wide range of temperature. Experimental results for the systems n-butane-hydrogen, sulfur hexafluoride-hydrogen, argon-hydrogen, and argon-helium are given for a temperature range from 10°C. to 140°C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current water-treatment technologies require considerable energy consumption. Thus, closely linked to the problem of water shortage is the impending energy crisis. Therefore, intensive research is being aimed at developing water purification processes that are based upon using renewable energy, such as solar energy, rather than energy generated using fossil fuels. There has been an accumulation of reports on the development of photocatalysts, which enable water purification using solar energy as the only driving force. Such photocatalysts, based upon oxide semiconductors, permit the conversion of solar energy into the chemical energy that is required for the oxidation of toxic organic compounds in water. The most promising photocatalyst is titanium dioxide, TiO2, and its solid solutions. The research on TiO2 photocatalysis is multidisciplinary, and progress in this area requires the application of concepts of catalysis and photocatalysis as well as concepts of solid-state chemistry.

Following, Fick’s laws of diffusion, atomic mechanisms, interdiffusion, intrinsic diffusion, tracer diffusion and the Kirkendall effect are discussed. Short circuit diffusion is explained in detail with an emphasis on grain boundary diffusion. Recent advances in the area of interdiffusion will be introduced. Interdiffusion in multi-component systems is also explained. Many practical examples will be given, such that researches working in this area can learn the practical evaluation of various diffusion parameters from experimental results. Large number of illustrations and experimental results are used to explain the subject. This book will be appealing for students, academicians, engineers and researchers in academic institutions, industry research and development laboratories.
