Book excerpt: Background: Every year, college coaching staffs spend numerous hours tracking and recruiting prospective student-athletes. Recruitment and retention of student-athletes are among the most important tasks of a college coach. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 2017 reported that there were 36,411 male student-athletes and 22,785 female student-athletes in 26 sports. Surprisingly, only two studies have been conducted with this population regarding the recruitment process. This knowledge gap prevents coaches from building a marketing plan that will help them successfully recruit and retain student-athletes. Purpose: This study examined the college selection process and identified the most important factors influencing NJCAA student-athletes in the college selection process. Methods: An invitation letter was sent to athletic directors of NJCAA institutions together with the College Selection Process Scale (CSPS). Athletic directors invited their student-athletes to participate in the study. One hundred and sixty-three student-athletes from Division I NJCAA Colleges took part in this study. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to examine the factor structure of the CSPS. A one-way MANOVA was used to examine the gender effect on Athletic Experience, Athletic Program, Academics, and Outside Influence. Results: Results of the EFA indicated that the CSPS should include: Athletic Experience (5 items), Athletic Program (6 items), Academics (6 items), and Outside Influence (6 items). These four factors explained 52.6% of the total variance, and their Cronbach alpha coefficients were .775, .869, .880, and .804, respectively. Results of the one-way MANOVA indicated the model was significant (p = .002) with a medium to large effect size and huge power (Wilks's Î) = .893, partial Îʺ2 = .107, power = .929). Post-hoc univariate ANOVAs showed that females had significantly higher Outside Influence mean scores than males. Conclusion: The results showed a new trend in factors influencing the college selection process. Overall, the five most important items (academic support, degree leading to a good job, institution offered an academic program of interest, academic reputation of the department of your desired major, and level of competition) should create a basis for coaches' marketing and recruiting strategies to successfully recruit student-athletes of a specific gender.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of Division III National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) student athletes in central North Carolina who successfully persist to a four-year institution. The theory that guided this study was Vincent Tinto's Theory of Student Integration (1975) as it established the principle that student's personal commitment or determination to earn a degree and their commitment to their college or university determines whether they will complete their educational goals. The central research question guiding this study is: What are the experiences of the Division III NJCAA student-athlete in central North Carolina who successfully persist to a four-year institution? The sub-research questions investigated how Division III NJCAA student-athletes describe their (a) social, (b) athletic, (c) academic and (d) personal experiences at the community college level that led to their successful persistence to a four-year university or college. This study intended to capture the authentic voice of NJCAA Division III student-athletes who had persisted to a four-year institution. The method for this transcendental phenomenological study incorporated individual in-depth interviews, writing samples, and a focus group as the primary data collection methods. Four themes emerged: Parent Support, Push to Succeed, Love of Sport, and Not Ready for a University.

Book excerpt: NFL stars Aaron Rogers and Cam Newton, and collegiate standout Nick Marshall of Auburn University played ball at a two-year college. All the playoff teams for the NFL and most of the 70 college bowl teams have former JUCO players on their rosters. The major organizations formed for the sole purpose of establishing rules, boundaries and regulations governing college sports: the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which govern four-year schools; the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA); and, in California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA formerly COA), Northwestern Athletic Association (NWAA) and a few other state specific community college entities are governing bodies for sports in two-year colleges. Six "JUCO" student athletes offer their insight about restoration and their transition to universities and professional sports. Solutions are shared to help community college student-athletes as they seek out their dreams of success in college and after.

Book excerpt: The arms race, the definition of amateurism, Title IX, commercialism and academic integrity are regularly titles of chapters or catch phrases of texts written about intercollegiate athletics. Community college research focuses on the student population, transfer issues and the role of 2-year colleges within higher education. This study focuses on the intersection. Junior college athletic programs have been operating for nearly a century and currently serve more than 70,000 college students throughout the country without the guidance of appropriate research. Five research questions are divided into two subgroups; the first focusing on the history of participation through affiliation with the NJCAA and the next four on current trends in the presence, size and specific sport opportunities in community colleges. Data on the history of participation was collected directly from NJCAA national offices and imported into spreadsheets, providing a substantial amount of raw data previously unavailable. The second subset of questions utilized merged data sets from IPEDS and EADA. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the historic data. Logisitic and OLS regression techniques provided results for the presence, size and specific sport analyses. The decline of men's opportunities in NJCAA institutions provides evidence that women's growth made possible through Title IX, occurred at the expense of men. The economic status of colleges provided a better indicator of growth or decline for either gender in junior college athletic programs after the initial thrust of women's teams ended. Enrollment, the percentage of full time students and the rural variable all proved to be positively associated with the presence of and size of athletic programs, while the female share of the student population was negatively associated with presence and size. The results provide information for local administrators of athletic departments, college administration, state governance groups and national associations. Financial constraints and concerns of supporting athletics at the community college level can be expanded. Gender equity issues should be explored in more detail. A foundation has been established, needs to be reinforced and should provide a launching point for future research in junior college athletics.

The Influential Factors Survey for Student-Athletes was used to collect data from 89 baseball student-athletes representing five different institutions in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Baseball student-athletes in their first year, second year and first year transfer students completed the survey instrument. Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.
