Book Synopsis Ubiquitin and the Biology of the Cell by : Jan-Michael Peters
Download or read book Ubiquitin and the Biology of the Cell written by Jan-Michael Peters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-05-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several years have been a landmark period in the ubiquitin field. The breadth of ubiquitin's roles in cell biology was first sketched, and the importance of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis as a regulatory mechanism gained general acceptance. The many strands of work that led to this new perception are re counted in this book. A consequence of this progress is that the field has grown dramatically since the first book on ubiquitin was published almost a decade ago [M. Rechsteiner (ed. ), Ubiquitin, Plenum Press, 1988]. In this span, students of the cell cycle, transcription, signal transduction, protein sorting, neuropathology, cancer, virology, and immunology have attempted to chart the role of ubi quit in in their particular experimental systems, and this integration of the field into cell biology as a whole continues at a remarkable pace. We hope that for active researchers in the field as well as for newcomers and those on the fence, this book will prove helpful for its breadth, historical perspective, and practical tips. Structural data are now available on many of the components of the ubiquitin pathway. The structures have provided basic insights into the unusual biochemical mechanisms of ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Because high-speed computer graphics can convey structures more effectively than print media, we have supplemented the figures of the book with a Worldwide Web site that can display the structures in a flexible, viewer-controlled format.

Book excerpt: Organized on a combined basis of chronology and of structural and functional hierarchy, This comprehensive text describes all aspects of proteins--biosynthesis, evolution, dynamics, ligand binding, catalysis, and energy transduction--not just their structures. This edition (first was 1984) is thoroughly updated--especially in the area of protein biosynthesis--and features end-of-chapter exercises and problems, many of which require the student to consult the cited literature in order to obtain the answer. Book Synopsis Current Topics in Cellular Regulation by : Bernard L. Horecker
Download or read book Current Topics in Cellular Regulation written by Bernard L. Horecker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation: Volume 28 is a collection of papers that deals with enzyme-enzyme interactions, regulation of metabolic reaction pathways, the relevance of intracellular amino acid pool in the regulation of protein metabolism, and the production of superoxide by phagocytic leukocytes. Other papers discuss the regulation of adrenergic receptor function by phosphyrylation, a membrane-bound metallo-endopeptidase (meprin), as well as the covalent modification as a mechanism of marking proteins for degradation. One paper notes that the transfer pathway involving enzyme-enzyme recognition is associated with molecular specificity features over those demanded by the molecular structural constraints of the individual enzyme sites. The Albery and Knowles principle, under certain conditions, shows that intermediary metabolites within a particular pathway exist in states of nearly equal free energy. One paper describes that the amino acid pool size and content are governed by the conditioning of intracellular proteins and the metabolic activity of the cell. The paper also suggests that intracellular pools do not regulate protein metabolism. The collection can prove beneficial for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology or physiology.
Book Synopsis Adverse Effects of Cancer Chemotherapy: Anything New to Improve Tolerance and Reduce Sequelae? by : Kulmira Nurgali
Download or read book Adverse Effects of Cancer Chemotherapy: Anything New to Improve Tolerance and Reduce Sequelae? written by Kulmira Nurgali and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in anti-cancer chemotherapy over recent years have led to improved efficacy in curing or controlling many cancers. Some chemotherapy-related side-effects are well recognized and include: nausea, vomiting, bone marrow suppression, peripheral neuropathy, cardiac and skeletal muscle dysfunction and renal impairment. However, it is becoming clearer that some chemotherapy-related adverse effects may persist even in long term cancer survivors. Problems such as cognitive, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal dysfunction, and neuropathy may lead to substantial long term morbidity. Despite improvements in treatments to counteract acute chemotherapy-induced adverse effects, they are often incompletely effective. Furthermore, counter-measures for some acute side-effects and many potential longer term sequelae of anti-cancer chemotherapy have not been developed. Thus, new insights into prevalence and mechanisms of cancer chemotherapy-related side effects are needed and new approaches to improving tolerance and reduce sequelae of cancer chemotherapy are urgently needed. The present Research Topic focuses on adverse effects and sequelae of chemotherapy and strategies to counteract them.
Download or read book EJB Reviews written by P. Christen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s the European Journal of Biochemistry set out to publish review articles. The enterprise proved successful, resulting in high-level reviews written by well-known scientists appearing in the Journal. The reviews represent emerging and rapidly growing fields of research in fundamental as well as applied areas of biochemistry, such as medicine, biotechnology, agriculture and nutrition. Novel methodological and technological approaches which stimulate biochemical research are also included. The authors of the reviews are explicitly asked to be critical, selective, evaluative and interdisciplinary oriented. The reviews should encourage young scientists to think independently and creatively, and inform active investigators about the state of the art in a given field.
