Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of the dissertation is the design and development of an imaging spectrometer that is capable of simultaneously measuring range. The instrument developed, called the Ranging-Imaging Spectrometer (RIS), is a marriage of two well-established technologies. The technologies are the Computed Tomographic Imaging Spectrometer (CTIS) and the Scannerless Range Imaging Laser Detection and Ranging instrument (SRI LADAR) developed at The University of Arizona and Sandia National Labs respectively. The instrument is the first of it kind with its ability to simultaneously detect passive reflectance spectra and active range detection on a single focal plane array without spatial scanning. This RIS has applications in military reconnaissance, mining, surveying, robotic vision, and autonomous vehicle navigation. The instrument has 77 x 77 pixels of spatial resolution, 61 spectral samples from 597 - 897 nm withDl = 5 nm, and range resolution of 8.92" 1.23 cm. The topic of the dissertation is first motivated by discussing current technologies and their related drawbacks that provide reasons for developing the RIS. A basic review of imaging spectrometry, CTIS, and SRI LADAR are presented as foundations on which the instrument is constructed. Technical data is then presented including: the design of the CTIS components, the opto-mechanical design for mounting and mating the two systems together, the spectral and range calibration techniques, the analysis of the spectral and range resolutions and tests, and a section on range errors and correction techniques. A section detailing range noise suppression techniques using statistics is included along with future work.

Book excerpt: "This thesis involved the design and testing of a modular imaging spectrometer instrument (MISI), which can provide hyperspectral image data at a very high ground resolution. The instrument can serve as an airborne laboratory for many remote sensing applications. The optical/mechanical/electrical system was designed using a system engineering approach with emphasis on system and sub-system modulation transfer function (MTF) analysis. Extensive modeling was used to predict the system performance and to aid the design trade process. Many sensor testing methodologies were developed to evaluate the performance of this electro-optical imaging system. The system engineering approach, the modeling tools developed, and the sensor performance testing methods can also be applied to other electro-optical (EO) imaging systems design and testing. Performance evaluation experiments verify that MISI has met its image quality goals. By using finite element analysis and optical image formation theory, the performance of a high-speed scan mirror was modeled. This model was used as a design tool to aid the development of the scan mirror assembly. A model-based algorithm was developed to derive the MTF of the imaging system from its edge spread function. By using prior information about the system, the MTF can be derived from very noisy edge traces. Finally, an alternative EO imaging system design criterion the information criterion, is investigated as a overall image quality measure. The results show that line-scan imaging system can be optimized informationally by shaping the electronic filter response and detector aperture. The analytical results also show that the traditional line-scan imaging system design does not maximize information, and the informationally optimized design with a diamond-shaped aperture can provide up to 1.5 bits more information than the traditional design over a broad range of radiance fields. Computer simulation confirms that by combining image acquisition and image processing, informationally optimized design tends to maximize image fidelity."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant step forward in the world of earth observation was made with the development of imaging spectrometry. Imaging spectrometers measure reflected solar radiance from the earth in many narrow spectral bands. Such a spectroscopical imaging system is capable of detecting subtle absorption bands in the reflectance spectra and measure the reflectance spectra of various objects with a very high accuracy. As a result, imaging spectrometry enables a better identification of objects at the earth surface and a better quantification of the object properties than can be achieved by traditional earth observation sensors such as Landsat TM and SPOT. The various chapters in the book present the concepts of imaging spectrometry by discussing the underlying physics and the analytical image processing techniques. The second part of the book presents in detail a wide variety of applications of these new techniques ranging from mineral identification, mapping of expansive soils, land degradation, agricultural crops, natural vegetation and surface water quality. Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the design effort for the construction of a visible-infrared imaging spectrometer for planetary missions, funded by NASA under the Planetary Instrument Definition and Development Program. The goal was to design and develop a prototype brassboard pushbroom imaging spectrometer covering the 0.35 gm to 2.5 gm spectral region using a simplified optical layout that would minimize the size, mass and parts count of the instrument by using a single holographic grating to disperse and focus light from a single slit onto both the infrared and visible focal plane arrays. Design approaches are presented and analyzed, along with problems encountered and recommended solutions to those problems. In particular, a new type of grating, incorporating two sets of rulings and a filter in a layered structure, is presented for further development. Book excerpt: The Ranging Imaging Spectrometer (RIS) combines hyperspectral and LADAR imaging capabilities in a single system, allowing both ranging and spectral discrimination to be performed. The RIS couples the Scannerless Range Imaging LADAR developed at Sandia National Laboratories with a Computed Tomographic Imaging Spectrometer (CTIS) operating between 600 nm and 900 nm to provide a hyperspectral snapshot-based imaging and ranging spectrometer. The output of the system is four dimensional, (x, y, z, and wavelength) data cube. The RIS spectral resolution is 10 nm; it has been demonstrated to 19nm. Its angular resolution is 2.8 mr; and its range resolution is 17.5 cm. It collects spectral samples in a 77 x 77 pixel format with angular subtend of 12.5 deg. The laser emitter wavelength is 857 nm. This report documents the RIS design, construction, testing, and range and spectral calibrations. It details solutions to the problems encountered in coupling the two systems, including (optimizing the CTIS for the 857-nm wavelength) and development of range correction technique that reduces error in range reconstruction by a factor of 10.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A snapshot imaging spectropolarimeter is under development. The instrument operates through the synthesis of the techniques of computed tomography imaging spectrometry (CTIS) and channeled spectropolarimetry. CTIS is a technique of imaging spectrometry in which an image of a scene is captured through a computer-generated holographic disperser. Spatially resolved spectra are reconstructed from the diffracted orders in post-processing. Channeled spectropolarimetry is a method of encoding the four components of a spectrally varying Stokes vector into a single Irradiance spectrum. The combination of the two techniques provides the basis of an imaging spectropolarimeter capable of acquiring a complete data set in a single focal plane array integration time with no moving parts. Our description of the instrument includes a review of the basic principles of both techniques. The diffraction orders generated by the CTIS disperser amount to projections through the scene's object cube, which provide an analogy to the medical imaging technique of computed tomography. Channeled spectropolarimetry is analogous to sideband modulation (as may be used in radio communication). Thick (high order) retarders and a polarizer are employed to introduce modulation. This viewpoint provides a starting point for the formulation of system requirements and reconstruction techniques. The requisite spectral resolution of the embedded spectrometer and selection of carrier frequencies by design of the retarders are addressed. We also discuss the design of a prototype snapshot imager for the visible spectrum and describe a non-imaging spectropolarimeter for the development of calibration and data reduction techniques.

Book excerpt: This book provides unique perspectives on the state of the art in multispectral/hyperspectral techniques for early-warning monitoring against chemical, biological and radiological (CB&R) contamination of both surface (e.g. land) and air (e.g. atmospheric) environments through the presentation of a comprehensive survey of the novel spectroscopic methodologies and technologies that are emerging to address the CB&R defense and security challenges of the future. The technical content in this book lends itself to the non-traditional requirements for point and stand-off detection that have evolved out of the US joint services programs over many years. In particular, the scientific and technological work presented seeks to enable hyperspectral-based sensing and monitoring that is in real time and in-line; low in cost and labor requirements; and easy to support, maintain and use in military and security-relevant scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers of space flight programs face unique technical challenges created by the space environment in which these systems operate. High costs and increasing complexity of space programs create a greater demand for mission reliability. This demand further drives up development costs and project time lines. The result is that few missions are flown and few organization are able to participate in space program development. Project budget and schedule overruns are in part a result of a risk-averse culture and the desire the create fail-proof systems. Resource constrained programs will have difficulty developing successful space systems if they attempt to fully address every risk. Rather, by taking a risk-tolerant posture, resource-constrained programs can more efficiently allocate resources to the most important areas of a system's development. By focusing effort and resources on high-risk areas, successful space programs can still be developed with lower budgets and smaller schedules than has traditionally been done. Recent attempts to lower the time and budgets necessary to develop space systems have focused on developing smaller, less complex, and more numerous space system to replace traditionally larger, more expensive systems. The benefits of small space systems range from distributing risk across multiple systems and thereby lowering the cost of failure, to providing smaller organizations and universities the capabilities to develop their own space systems. Though these programs are cheaper, many organizations of small space systems are faced with limited resources that must be intelligently allocated to develop successful space programs. This thesis presents the structural design, analysis, and testing of the REgolith Xray Imaging Spectrometer (REXIS), a student-led instrument on board the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Origins Spectral Interpretation Resource Identification and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) asteroid sample return mission. As part a student experiment, the REXIS team must develop its system under tight resource constraints. The limited funding, personnel, equipment, and facilities available to the REXIS team all have important implications on how design, analysis, and testing decisions are made on REXIS. This thesis provides a discussion of key areas of the REXIS structural development and lessons learned from a structural engineering point of view. Chapter 1 opens the discussion by talking about the motivation behind this thesis. It provides background information to the REXIS instrument and the context for the rest of the instrument discussion. The REXIS flight structural design and how this design facilitates the accomplishment of REXIS goals is presented in Chapter 2. Next, the analysis and testing of the Radiation Cover, one of REXIS's most critical elements, is described in Chapter 3. The key efforts taken on the REXIS structural development is discussed in Chapter 4. This particular section, through the discussion of the chronological development of the REXIS flight structural design, will highlight important areas of where efforts was focused on REXIS within the project constraints. Lastly, Chapter 5 provides lessons learned from a structural engineering point of view from the experiences on REXIS. Although the discussion focuses on the REXIS structural development, the examples and discussions described are relevant to other programs. This thesis is meant to provide insight into the REXIS development from which engineers of future small space programs can learn.
