Book excerpt: The size of the defense budget is a pressing issue in the wake of the post Cold War reduction in defense spending and the priorities of balancing the federal budget. Moreover, the difficulties of determining the impacts and outcomes of budget decisions add to existing challenges. Congress and other decisionmakers have a practical and continuous need for information on defense related expenditures and employment in states. In response to your request, and discussions with your office, we examined defense and other federal spending in the state of New Mexico. Specifically, we examined (1) characteristics of New Mexico's economy and changes in it; (2) the amount of direct defense related and nondefense related federal spending in the state and the direct federal employment associated with both, over time; and (3) the extent to which available government data can provide reliable information on defense spending and employment. The last issue became a major component of our study, since the quality of the data directly affects what can be concluded about defense spending and employment.

Download or read book Military base closures progress in completing actions from prior realignments and closures. written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through base realignment and closure rounds in 1988, 1991, 1993, and 1995, the Department of Defense expected to significantly reduce its domestic infrastructure and provide needed dollars for high-priority programs such as modernization. With the conclusion of the 6-year implementation period of the last round in fiscal year 2001, the department has closed or realigned hundreds of bases, has generated savings from these actions, and is in the process of transferring unneeded base property to other users. At the same time, the communities surrounding the former defense bases continue the lengthy process of recovery from the economic impact of the closure process. Our last comprehensive report on the implementation of base closure decisions was issued in December 1998. In that report, we concluded that the closure process was generating substantial savings (although the savings estimates were imprecise), most former base property had not yet been transferred to other users, and most communities surrounding closed bases were faring well economically in relation to key national economic indicators. In a July 2001 report and August 2001 testimony, we updated our closure implementation data and reaffirmed the primary results of our prior work.

Book Synopsis The Nuclear Borderlands by : Joseph Masco
Download or read book The Nuclear Borderlands written by Joseph Masco and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important investigation of the sociocultural fallout of America's work on the atomic bomb In The Nuclear Borderlands, Joseph Masco offers an in-depth look at the long-term consequences of the Manhattan Project. Masco examines how diverse groups in and around Los Alamos, New Mexico understood and responded to the U.S. nuclear weapons project in the post–Cold War period. He shows that the American focus on potential nuclear apocalypse during the Cold War obscured the broader effects of the nuclear complex on society, and that the atomic bomb produced a new cognitive orientation toward daily life, reconfiguring concepts of time, nature, race, and citizenship. This updated edition includes a brand-new preface by the author discussing current developments in nuclear politics and the scientific impact of the nuclear age on the present epoch of a human-altered climate.
