Book Synopsis Structural Durability: Methods and Concepts by : Ruediger Heim
Download or read book Structural Durability: Methods and Concepts written by Ruediger Heim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides methods and concepts which enable engineers to design mass and cost efficient products. Therefore, the book introduces background and motivation related to sustainability and lightweight design by looking into those aspects from a durability and quality point of view. Hence this book gives a "top-down" approach: What does an engineer has to do for providing a mass and cost efficient solution? A central part of that approach is the "stress-strength interference model" and how to deal with "stresses" (caused by operational loads) as well as with the "strength" of components (provided by material, design and manufacturing process). The basic concepts of material fatigue are introduced, but the focus of the volume is to develop an understanding of the content and sequence of engineering tasks to be performed which help to build reliable products. This book is therefore aimed specifically at students of mechanical engineering and mechatronics and at engineers in professional practice.

Book Synopsis West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database by : Lawrence E. Osborn
Download or read book West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database written by Lawrence E. Osborn and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In West Virginia, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is abundant and is a prime candidate for increased utilization in a variety of manufacturing industries. Computer simulations are a cost-effective tool for estimating potential cutting yields from lumber. They can be used to promote increased use of yellow-poplar in the furniture, cabinet, and architectural woodworking industries and may also lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber. This paper describes the data collection methods and the format of the new West Virginia yellow-poplar lumber defect database that was developed for use with computer simulation programs. The database contains descriptions of 627 boards, totaling approximately 3,800 board feet, collected in West Virginia for grades FAS, FASIF, No. 1 Common, No. 2A Common, and No. 28 Common.S3.

Book Synopsis Cumulative Damage of Welded Joints by : T R Gurney
Download or read book Cumulative Damage of Welded Joints written by T R Gurney and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-25 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue is a mechanism of failure which involves the formation and growth of cracks under the action of repeated stresses. Ultimately, a crack may propagate to such an extent that total fracture of the member may occur. To avoid fatigue it is essential to design the structure with inherent fatigue strength. However, fatigue strength for variable amplitude loading is not a constant material property and any calculations are necessarily built on a number of assumptions. Cumulative damage of welded joints explores the wealth of research in this important field and its implications for the design and manufacture of welded components. After an Introduction, chapter two introduces the constant amplitude database, which contains results obtained in test conditions and which forms the basis of the basic S-N curves for various types of joint. Chapter three discusses the influence of residual stresses which can have a marked effect on fatigue behaviour. Chapter four explores variable amplitude loading and the problem of how information from laboratory tests, obtained under constant amplitude conditions, can be applied to the design of structures for service conditions. This problem is further investigated in the next chapter which is devoted to two and three level load testing. Chapters six, seven and eight look at the influence that the variety of variable loading spectra can have on fatigue strength, whether narrow or wide band loading or cycles of small stress range. Taking all of this knowledge, chapter nine discusses structure designs.Cumulative damage of welded joints is a comprehensive source of invaluable information for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers. It will also be of great interest for academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering. Covers the wealth of research in the field of fatigue strength and its role in the design and manufacture of welded components Invaluable reference source for welding engineers, supervisors, inspection personnel and designers
