Book excerpt: As part of the effort being made to evaluate the CO2 storage potential of deep saline aquifers in Israel, the objective of this study is to evaluate the storage potential of the Lower aquifer in the Negev, which comprises Paleozoic - Triassic rocks of the Negev and Ramon groups. CO2 emission to the atmosphere is considered as one of the major reasons for climate change. One of the more feasible options for reducing CO2 emission from fossil fuels combustion is its capture and storage in porous rocks in the deep subsurface. Deep saline aquifers are considered to have the best potential for CO2 storage, for long periods of time. The most effective phase for CO2 to be stored in the subsurface is in its supercritical phase, when it has a density of liquid and viscosity of gas properties, and thus will allow better usage of the pore space, while keeping the easy injectivity of a gas. In order to have a better understanding of the petrophysical properties and the litho-facies of the studied section (Negev and Ramon groups), an in depth geological investigation of these layers has been carried, using petrophysical and petrographic data from boreholes. Based on these geological investigation a new reservoir has been defined here for storage purposes comprises the lowermost four formations of the Lower aquifer; Sa'ad, Arqov, Shezaf and Yamin formations called the "Permian" aquifer. The thermophysical conditions prevail in the Permian aquifer are suitable for CO2 storage in its super-critical phase throughout the entire study area. However, the large depth to the aquifer's top is one of the reasons for the scarcity of wellbores and seismic data in this section. This shortage of data triggered a geostatistical approach which has been implemented in this study and included examination of the variability in the calculated depth and thickness of the layers, caused by using different methods of spatial interpolations. In addition, a few sensitivity tests of several parameters controlling the temperature and pressure of the subsurface, and by that effecting the capacity assessments has been conducted, in order to determine the magnitude of error in the effective capacity calculation. Those examination yields that the difference in total capacity for CO2 storage between 6 interpolation methods is 2.4% and that an error in determining the depth parameter of the reservoir top yields an error of less than 1% in total capacity calculations. This study found that the minimum total capacity estimation for CO2 storage in the Permian aquifer is 1.53 Gt (Giga-Tonnes) which are 27% of the total future emissions of Israel for 50 years (2025-2075) and by that can't be regarded as the only storage solution for CO2. -- abstract.

Book excerpt: Anthropogenic levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2) have increased rapidly over the last several decades and coincide with rising temperatures globally. One possible solution is to capture CO2 before it is released into the atmosphere by large point sources, such as fossil fuel power plants. Once captured, the CO2 can be condensed and transported to a storage facility. Of the available options for storage of condensed CO2, geologic sequestration in deep saline aquifers is considered the most viable option. Porosity measurements were obtained for nearly 100 core samples of the Knox and Stones River groups from the middle Tennessee area as part of a larger project for the Tennessee Division of Geology, characterizing the potential for geologic CO2 sequestration in Tennessee. Certain formations within these groups were found to exhibit higher porosity (higher storage potential) than others. Measured porosity values were quite low, ranging from 0.21 - 10.67 % with a median value of 1.21 %. These data can be used to aid in the decision making process concerning possible geologic targets for geologic CO2 sequestration in Tennessee. A sensitivity analysis was also performed using a numerical model for geologic carbon sequestration (STOMP). Intrinsic permeability, porosity, pore compressibility, the van Genuchten residual liquid saturation, [alpha] and m parameters, and the Brooks and Corey residual liquid and gas saturations were varied independently and their influence on CO2 storage was determined. Changes in costs based on the parameter variations were calculated to evaluate the relative importance of the various parameters. The most influential parameters were intrinsic permeability, the van Genuchten m parameter, and the Brooks and Corey residual gas saturation. These results highlight the need for accurate measurement of intrinsic permeability and capillary pressure saturation parameters in addition to more commonly measured properties like porosity.

Deep saline aquifers have been reported to have larger CO2 storage capacity than other formation types because of their availability worldwide and less competitive usage. This work proposes an analytical model for screening potential CO2 storage sites and investigates injection strategies that can be employed to enhance CO2 storage. The analytical model provides of estimates CO2 storage efficiency, formation pressure profiles, and CO2-brine interface location. The results from the analytical model were compared to those from a sophisticated and reliable numerical model (TOUGH2). The models showed excellent agreement when input conditions applied in both were similar. Results from sensitivity studies indicate that the agreement between the analytical model and TOUGH2 strongly depends on irreducible brine saturation, gravity and on the relationship between relative permeability and brine saturation. A series of numerical experiments have been conducted to study the pros and cons of different injection strategies for CO2 storage in confined saline aquifers. Vertical, horizontal, and joint vertical and horizontal injection wells were considered. Simulations results show that horizontal wells could be utilized to improve CO2 storage capacity and efficiency in confined aquifers under pressure-limited conditions with relative permeability ratios greater than or equal to 0:01. In addition, joint wells are more efficient than single vertical wells and less efficient than single horizontal wells for CO2 storage in anisotropic aquifers.

To make an impact on the environment CO2 should be put away on the scale of gigatonnes per annum. The storage capacity of deep saline aquifers is estimated to be as high as 1,000 gigatonnes of CO2.(IPCC). Published reports on the potential for sequestration fail to address the necessity of storing CO2 in a closed system. This work addresses issues related to sequestration of CO2 in closed aquifers and the risk associated with aquifer pressurization. Through analytical modeling we show that the required volume for storage and the number of injection wells required are more than what has been envisioned, which renders geologic sequestration of CO2 a profoundly nonfeasible option for the management of CO2 emissions unless brine is produced to create voidage and pressure relief. The results from our analytical model match well with a numerical reservoir simulator including the multiphase physics of CO2 sequestration. Rising aquifer pressurization threatens the seal integrity and poses a risk of CO2 leakage. Hence, monitoring the long-term integrity of CO2 storage reservoirs will be a critical aspect for making geologic sequestration a safe, effective and acceptable method for greenhouse gas control. Verification of long-term CO2 residence in receptor formations and quantification of possible CO2 leaks are required for developing a risk assessment framework. Important aspects of pressure falloff tests for CO2 storage reservoirs are discussed with a focus on reservoir pressure monitoring and leakage detection. The importance of taking regular pressure falloffs for a commercial sequestration project and how this can help in diagnosing an aquifer leak will be discussed. The primary driver for leakage in bulk phase injection is the buoyancy of CO2 under typical deep reservoir conditions. Free-phase CO2 below the top seal is prone to leak if a breach happens in the top seal. Consequently, another objective of this research is to propose a way to engineer the CO2 injection system in order to accelerate CO2 dissolution and trapping. The engineered system eliminates the buoyancy-driven accumulation of free gas and avoids aquifer pressurization by producing brine out of the system. Simulations for 30 years of CO2 injection followed by 1,000 years of natural gradient show how CO2 can be securely and safely stored in a relatively smaller closed aquifer volume and with a greater storage potential. The engineered system increases CO2 dissolution and capillary trapping over what occurs under the bulk phase injection of CO2. This thesis revolves around identification, monitoring and mitigation of the risks associated with geological CO2 sequestration.
