Book Synopsis Selling Mrs. Consumer by : Janice Williams Rutherford
Download or read book Selling Mrs. Consumer written by Janice Williams Rutherford and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length treatment of the life and work of Christine Frederick (1883-1970) reveals an important dilemma that faced educated women of the early twentieth century. Contrary to her professional role as home efficiency expert, advertising consultant, and consumer advocate, Christine Frederick espoused the nineteenth-century ideal of preserving the virtuous home--and a woman's place in it. In an effort to reconcile her desire to succeed in the public sphere of modernization and consumerism with the knowledge that most middle-class Americans still held traditional beliefs about gender roles, Frederick fashioned a career for herself that encouraged other women to remain at home. With the rise of home economics and scientific management, Frederick--college-educated but confined to the drudgery of housework--devised a plan for bringing the public sphere into the domestic. Her home would become her factory. She learned how to standardize tasks by observing labor-saving devices in industry and then applied this knowledge to housework. She standardized dishwashing, for example, by breaking the job into three separate operations: scraping and stacking, washing, and drying and putting away. Determined to train women to become proficient homemakers and efficient managers, Frederick secured a job writing articles for the Ladies' Home Journal. A professional career as home efficiency expert later expanded to include advertising consultant and consumer advocate. Frederick assured male advertisers that she knew women well and promised to help them sell to "Mrs. Consumer." While Frederick sought the power and influence available only to men, she promoted a division of labor by gender and therefore served the fall of the early-twentieth-century wave of feminism. Rutherford's engaging account of Christine Frederick's life reflects a dilemma that continues to affect women today--whether to seek professional gratification or adhere to traditional family values.

Book Synopsis The Noodle Narratives by : Frederick Errington
Download or read book The Noodle Narratives written by Frederick Errington and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tasty, convenient, and cheap, instant noodles are one of the most remarkable industrial foods ever. Consumed around the world by millions, they appeal to young and old, affluent and impoverished alike. The authors examine the history, manufacturing, marketing, and consumption of instant noodles. By focusing on three specific markets, they reveal various ways in which these noodles enable diverse populations to manage their lives. The first market is in Japan, where instant noodles have facilitated a major transformation of post-war society, while undergoing a seemingly endless tweaking in flavors, toppings, and packaging in order to entice consumers. The second is in the United States, where instant noodles have become important to many groups including college students, their nostalgic parents, and prison inmates. The authors also take note of “heavy users,” a category of the chronically hard-pressed targeted by U.S. purveyors. The third is in Papua New Guinea, where instant noodles arrived only recently and are providing cheap food options to the urban poor, all the while transforming them into aspiring consumers. Finally, this study examines the global “Big Food” industry. As one of the food system’s singular achievements, the phenomenon of instant noodles provides insight into the pros and cons of global capitalist provisioning.
Download or read book Cheap Meat written by Deborah B. Gewertz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gewertz and Errington unpack the aspirations and anxieties, calculations and controversies that inhabit an inexpensive cut of fatty meat. Following the trail of sheep bellies from slaughterhouses in Australia and New Zealand to the plates of Pacific Islanders, they evenhandedly map the divergent perspectives of commercial traders, government officials, and ordinary consumers acting within a contested material and moral economy. Cheap Meat provides a startling view of how global food markets fashion the bodies and identities of people everywhere."--Robert J. Foster, author of Coca-Globalization: Following Soft Drinks from New York to New Guinea "Cheap Meat is a compelling example of how ethnography concerned with Oceania can elucidate broader questions in anthropology and the social sciences in general. Gewertz and Errington show the complexity of globalization by focusing on the most unlikely commodity. This work at once demonstrates how unfettered capitalism is able to use global circulation to literally convert one person's trash to another's treasure and how resilient Pacific Islanders refashion Western commodities to their own ends."--Paige West, Curator for the Pacific American Museum of Natural History

Book Synopsis People of the Bible Uncensored by : Dr. David Stoop
Download or read book People of the Bible Uncensored written by Dr. David Stoop and published by Revell. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories in the Bible demonstrate how God works through the lives of ordinary, very human, people just like us. For millennia, the stories of the Patriarchs, along with several women, have been told from generation to generation in the Jewish community, shaping how God's chosen people understand their relationship with him. In People of the Bible Uncensored, modern Christians can get to know these legendary characters and the God who worked in and through them. Readers will be introduced to David, who wrestled with sexual temptation, and Abraham, who found it just as difficult to wait on God's timing as Christians sometimes do today. As they begin to see the ancients for who they really were, readers will be encouraged and challenged to trust the God who can accomplish extraordinary things through the unlikeliest of people.
Download or read book Ten Sisters written by Dew and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the autobiographies composed by ten sisters. It is an inspirational story of a family with extraordinary parents who raised twenty-two children. After over a year of marriage, they became surrogate parents of seven children. They never complained, but did whatever it took to provide for the household. Ten daughters share unforgettable real life accounts of how the whole family handled calamity. Each unique story will share a different aspect of Gods faithfulness to His Word and to those who put their trust in Him. This book testifies that God will never leave us nor forsake us, and He is a present help in the time of trouble. It is a book to commemorate amazing parents who lived for a cause bigger than themselves and survived insurmountable challenges. Each chapter tells about a Mom who was audacious in facing oppositions because of her faith in an unfailing God. And above all, this book tells about a loving heavenly Father who is the foundation of the family; who spoke a Word over the lives of family members, and used earthly parents to train the children to carry out His plan. This story shows how God has been watching over His Word that was planted in the lives of individuals to perform it long after the parents are gone.
