Book Synopsis Border Jumping and Migration Control in Southern Africa by : Francis Musoni
Download or read book Border Jumping and Migration Control in Southern Africa written by Francis Musoni and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the end of apartheid rule in South Africa and the ongoing economic crisis in Zimbabwe, the border between these Southern African countries has become one of the busiest inland ports of entry in the world. As border crossers wait for clearance, crime, violence, and illegal entries have become rampant. Francis Musoni observes that border jumping has become a way of life for many of those who live on both sides of the Limpopo River and he explores the reasons for this, including searches for better paying jobs and access to food and clothing at affordable prices. Musoni sets these actions into a framework of illegality. He considers how countries have failed to secure their borders, why passports are denied to travelers, and how border jumping has become a phenomenon with a long history, especially in Africa. Musoni emphasizes cross-border travelers' active participation in the making of this history and how clandestine mobility has presented opportunity and creative possibilities for those who are willing to take the risk.
Book Synopsis Media and the Empire by : Ruth Teer-Tomaselli
Download or read book Media and the Empire written by Ruth Teer-Tomaselli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on print and broadcast media in the 19th and 20th centuries highlights the pivotal role that the media played in the establishment and maintenance of imperial power. The media bolstered both the ideological and financial objectives of the empire in a myriad of overt, covert, and downright scandalous ways. From jeopardising the introduction of wireless telegraphy in order to maximise the financial gains of the investors of under-sea cabling, to newspaper proprietors cashing in on the thrilling, wonderful (and sometimes fabricated) adventures of war correspondents in exotic lands, the media has had a constant background influence in the public’s perception of empire. By covering diverse topics from Anthony Lejeune’s radio talk-show ‘London Letters’ – which supported the Allies by boosting morale and providing a link between soldiers fighting abroad and their families during both World Wars, to the complete subversion of imperial influence – as in the case of the proliferation of diverse media platforms being used by migrant communities in Britain as a means to promote ‘colonization in reverse’, the book hints at the politics, suspense, and intrigue of both the print and broadcast sectors. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Arts.

Book Synopsis One Hundred Years of Social Protection by : Lutz Leisering
Download or read book One Hundred Years of Social Protection written by Lutz Leisering and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the rise of social protection in the global North has been widely researched, we know little about the history of social protection in the global South. This volume investigates the experiences of four middle-income countries - Brazil, India, China and South Africa - from 1920 to 2020, analysing if, when, and how these countries articulated a concern about social issues and social cohesion. As the first in-depth study of the ideational foundations of social protection policies and programmes in these four countries, the contributions demonstrate that the social question was articulated in an increasingly inclusive way. The contributions identify the ideas, beliefs, and visions that underpinned the movement towards inclusion and social peace as well as counteracting doctrines. Drawing on perspectives from the sociology of knowledge, grounded theory, historiography, discourse analysis, and process tracing, the volume will be of interest to scholars across political science, sociology, political economy, history, area studies, and global studies, as well as development experts and policymakers.

Book Synopsis Class, Race and Gold by : Frederick A Johnstone
Download or read book Class, Race and Gold written by Frederick A Johnstone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, this book is a sociological and historical study of class and race relations in a crucial sector of South Africa – the gold mining industry, during and following the First World War. The author develops a Marxist structuralist explanation of the system of racial discrimination, and then goes in to examine the significant historical events of this formative period, notably those surrounding the strike and uprising of the white workers in 1922. The book explains a system of racial domination essentially in terms of the class positions and problems of the dominating groups, and examines historical developments concerning race in terms of class.
Book Synopsis International Law: Process and Prospect by : ANTHONY. D'AMATO
Download or read book International Law: Process and Prospect written by ANTHONY. D'AMATO and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does international law exist, and is it real? How can the law of individual human rights be accommodated in an international legal system that is apparently addressed to nations and not to individuals? These are among the provocative questions grappled with in this highly articulate, enlightening and refreshing book. With an eye toward the 21st century, Anthony D'Amato provides a provocative tool for students and practitioners of international law. He draws on his experience to produce a highly lucid examination of the issues arising out of the process of intranational law formation and justification as applied to, and shaped by, some of the critical international issues of our day.
