The knock at the door shook her from a deep sleep. When she saw the cops, Jessica knew why they were there. As a LA Detective, she’d been on the other side of the door plenty of times. Someone she loved was dead. Time slowed. Her heart sank. They knew she knew. Before they could get to the news, her mind raced. Growing up in Hawaii, half of her family in law enforcement and the other half gang members, she’d known the darker side of life. As the detectives explained why they’d come, Jessica was only partly listening until they said it was her father who’d died… …in a plane wreck. And in that moment, the instinct to grieve was gone. He was meticulous in his maintenance. She didn’t believe it was an accident. Who murdered her father? Jessica was going home to Hawaii. You’ll love this gripping thriller with a taste of romance, because of the twists, turns, and complex characters. Death Orchid Revenge and greed…a deadly combination in paradise. The hunter becomes the hunted in this chilling Hawaii thriller. Over twenty years as an LA cop will do things to you. It’s called PTSD. But moving to Hawaii for the sun, sand and a billionaire boyfriend would fix it. At least that’s what Jessica Kealoha kept telling herself. But a Russian assassin wants revenge for the death of his brother at the hands of Jessica. When he can’t kill her, he kidnaps her newly adopted son. The only way to save the boy...is to kill herself. What happens when you rip-off the bad guys? Ivan Volkov hacked a couple of bank accounts, owned by the Russian mob. He's hunting Jessica and the Russians are hunting them both. You won't be able to put down this addictive book, in a “who’s killing who” on the Big Island. The Death in Hawaii series…beautiful...deadly…and compelling. The Kona Strangler A Hawaiian serial-killer thriller that will make you think twice about ever being alone. A clear blue ocean, sandy white beaches–and five dead real estate agents. On the Big Island of Hawaii, sleepy Kona has become the hunting grounds for a serial killer. With little faith in the local PD’s limited resources, and before they find another body, the governor calls in retired LAPD detective Jessica Kealoha to join the serial killer task force. Jessica quickly butts heads with the mayor of the island who is demanding results and questioning her tactics. When the killer sends a letter to the newspaper with details of her best friend's murder long ago–a chilling connection becomes a reality that Jessica can't live with. Death Tide A thrilling family tale of murder and intrigue in Paradise. Kailua Kona, Hawaii. Retired detective Jessica Kealoha finds herself in the murder trial of her sister Pua and rife with guilt because she's being forced to testify against her. Many in town have already decided Pua's guilt and only see the trial as a formality before they send her to prison for life. Jessica discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye and must find the evidence that will free her sister before it's too late.

This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named One of the Best Nonfiction Books of 2022 by the Los Angeles Times A premier historian penetrates the fog of corruption and cover-up still surrounding the murder of a Stanford University founder to establish who did it, how, and why. In 1885 Jane and Leland Stanford cofounded a university to honor their recently deceased young son. After her husband’s death in 1893, Jane Stanford, a devoted spiritualist who expected the university to inculcate her values, steered Stanford into eccentricity and public controversy for more than a decade. In 1905 she was murdered in Hawaii, a victim, according to the Honolulu coroner’s jury, of strychnine poisoning. With her vast fortune the university’s lifeline, the Stanford president and his allies quickly sought to foreclose challenges to her bequests by constructing a story of death by natural causes. The cover-up gained traction in the murky labyrinths of power, wealth, and corruption of Gilded Age San Francisco. The murderer walked. Deftly sifting the scattered evidence and conflicting stories of suspects and witnesses, Richard White gives us the first full account of Jane Stanford’s murder and its cover-up. Against a backdrop of the city’s machine politics, rogue policing, tong wars, and heated newspaper rivalries, White’s search for the murderer draws us into Jane Stanford’s imperious household and the academic enmities of the university. Although Stanford officials claimed that no one could have wanted to murder Jane, we meet several people who had the motives and the opportunity to do so. One of these, we discover, also had the means.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bones of Hawaii's King Kamehameha the Great were hidden at night in a secret location. In contrast, his successor Kamehameha III had a half-mile-long funeral procession to the Royal Tomb watched by thousands. Drawing on missionary journals, government publications and Hawaiian and English language newspapers, this book describes changes in funerary practices for Hawaiian royalty and details the observance of each royal death beginning with that of Kamehameha in 1819. Funeral observances of Western royalty provided an extravagant model for their Hawaiian counterparts yet many indigenous practices endured. Mourners no longer knocked out their teeth or tattooed their tongues but mass wailing, feather standards and funeral dirges continued well into the 20th century. Dozens of historic drawings and photographs provide rare glimpses of the obsequies of the Kamehameha and Kalakaua dynasties. Descriptions of the burial sites provide locations of the final resting places of Hawaii's royalty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth and final volume of the Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900, records the most volatile period in Hawaii's history. American business interests and the desire for a constitutional monarchy were pitted against the desire of the monarchs, King Kaläkaua and Queen Liliuokalani, to strengthen the power of the throne. The convulsions of the 1887 and 1889 revolutions were succeeded by the overthrow of the monarchy on January 17, 1893. Documents revealing the struggle over annexation, beginning in 1893, and the counterrevolution of 1895 are an important component of this volume. Annexation in 1898 was followed by a two-year period during which functions of government and laws were altered to conform to those of the United States. After the organic act became effective in 1900, vestiges of monarchical Hawaii disappeared and the history of the Territory of Hawaii unfolded. As with the previous volumes, Volume 4 is a record of printed works touching on some aspect of the political, religious, cultural, or social history of the Hawaiian Islands. A valuable component of this series is the inclusion of newspaper and periodical accounts, and single-sheet publications such as broadsides, circulars, playbills, and handbills. Entries are extensively annotated, and also provided for each are exact title, date of publication, size of volume, collation of pages, number and type of plates and maps, references, and location of copies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its introduction to Hawai‘i in 1879, the ‘ukulele has been many things: a symbol of an island paradise; a tool of political protest; an instrument central to a rich musical culture; a musical joke; a highly sought-after collectible; a cheap airport souvenir; a lucrative industry; and the product of a remarkable synthesis of western and Pacific cultures. The ‘Ukulele: A History explores all of these facets, placing the instrument for the first time in a broad historical, cultural, and musical context. Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped sources, Jim Tranquada and John King tell the surprising story of how an obscure four-string folk guitar from Portugal became the national instrument of Hawai’i, of its subsequent rise and fall from international cultural phenomenon to “the Dangerfield of instruments,” and of the resurgence in popularity (and respect) it is currently enjoying among musicians from Thailand to Finland. The book shows how the technologies of successive generations (recorded music, radio, television, the Internet) have played critical roles in popularizing the ‘ukulele. Famous composers and entertainers (Queen Liliuokalani, Irving Berlin, Arthur Godfrey, Paul McCartney, SpongeBob SquarePants) and writers (Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, P. G. Wodehouse, Agatha Christie) wind their way through its history—as well as a host of outstanding Hawaiian musicians (Ernest Kaai, George Kia Nahaolelua, Samuel K. Kamakaia, Henry A. Peelua Bishaw). In telling the story of the ‘ukulele, Tranquada and King also present a sweeping history of modern Hawaiian music that spans more than two centuries, beginning with the introduction of western melody and harmony by missionaries to the Hawaiian music renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s.
