Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exciting field of biblical archaeology has revolutionized our understanding of the Bible -- and no one has done more to popularise this vast store of knowledge than Israel Finkelstein and Neil Silberman, who revealed what we now know about when and why the Bible was first written in The Bible Unearthed. Now, with David and Solomon, they do nothing less than help us to understand the sacred kings and founding fathers of western civilization. David and his son Solomon are famous in the Bible for their warrior prowess, legendary loves, wisdom, poetry, conquests, and ambitious building programmes. Yet thanks to archaeology's astonishing finds, we now know that most of these stories are myths. Finkelstein and Silberman show us that the historical David was a bandit leader in a tiny back-water called Jerusalem, and how -- through wars, conquests and epic tragedies like the exile of the Jews in the centuries before Christ and the later Roman conquest -- David and his successor were reshaped into mighty kings and even messiahs, symbols of hope to Jews and Christians alike in times of strife and despair and models for the great kings of Europe. A landmark work of research and lucid scholarship by two brilliant luminaries, David and Solomon recasts the very genesis of western history in a whole new light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Saul, David, and Solomon are inextricably entwined, but they are scattered in the Bible between the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and 1 and 2 Kings. This book tells you the full, true story of Israel's Greatest Kings in a single, uninterrupted narrative. Samuel, the righteous Judge and Prophet, anoints Saul, a Benjamite, the tallest of his countrymen, as Israel's first King. As Saul disobeys God and declines into madness, defeat, and suicide, David, the shepherd from Bethlehem, of the tribe of Judah, arises to kill the giant Goliath and become the King's son-in-law and rebel leader on the run. Finally, David becomes King of Judah and then King of Israel, and the House of Saul loses its royal standing. David is a man after God's own heart, but his deliberate sins - adultery and murder - result in bloodshed and civil war. His son, Solomon, secures the throne over the heads of his older brothers, and receives unparalleled wisdom, wealth, and power from God. He builds the First Temple, but then falls into apostasy. The story of these men covers the transition of Israel from a theocracy, ruled by Judges accountable directly to God, to a monarchy, with all the failings of men. If you are a believer, this book will enhance your devotions by helping you know the Biblical narrative more intimately. If you are a skeptic, its logic will challenge your doubts. Here you will discover facets of this era - surprising things in plain sight - in the ink on the pages of Scripture - but that many have overlooked.

This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Israel Under Samuel, Saul, and David, to the Birth of Solomon The history of Israel, viewed as the Theocracy, or Kingdom of God, consists of three periods: First, that under the guidance of Prophets (from Moses to Samuel); secondly, that under the rule of Kings (from Saul to the Babylonish Captivity); and, thirdly, that under the reign of High-priesis (from Ezra to the birth of Jesus Christ). Thus the Theocracy had passed through its full typical development in all its stages, when He came, to Whom they all pointed: Jesus Christ, the Prophet, King, and High-priest of the Kingdom of God. The period described in the present volume closes one of these stages, and commences another. The connecting link between them was Samuel - who alone fully realised the mission of the Judges, and who was also Divinely appointed to inaugurate the new institution of royalty in Israel. That royalty next appeared in its twofold possibility - or, as we might express it, in its negative and positive aspects. Saul embodied the royal ideal of the people, while David represented the Scriptural ideal of royalty in its conscious subjection to the will of the Heavenly King. Saul was, so to speak, the king after Israel's, David after God's own heart. But with the actual introduction of monarchy the first period had come to an end, and a new era begun, which was intended to continue till the third and last preliminary stage was reached, which prepared the way for the Advent of Him, Who was the fulfilment of the typical meaning of all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponder questions of the united monarchy under Saul and David in light of current historical and archaeological evidence Reconstructing the emergence of the Israelite monarchy involves interpreting historical research, approaching questions of ancient state formation, synthesizing archaeological research from sites in the southern Levant, and reexamining the biblical traditions of the early monarchy embedded in the books of Samuel and Kings. Integrating these approaches allows for a nuanced and differentiated picture of one of the most crucial periods in the history of ancient Israel. Rather than attempting to harmonize archaeological data and biblical texts or to supplement the respective approach by integrating only a portion of data stemming from the other, both perspectives come into their own in this volume presenting the results of an interdisciplinary Tübingen–Tel Aviv Research Colloquium. Features: Essays on Israel's monarchy by experts in biblical archaeology and biblical studies Methods for integrating archaeology and biblical traditions in reconstructing ancient Israel's history New research on the sociopolitical process of state formation in Israel and Judah

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excerpt from the INTRODUCTION - General Character of the Book: The book purports to give the last words, at the approach of death, of each of the twelve patriarchs to his sons. It is evident that the general idea of the book is based upon Jacob's last words to his sons as recorded in Gen. xlix. 1-27. Just as Jacob portrays the character of his sons and declares to them what shall befall them, so in our book each of the patriarchs is represented as describing, in some sense, his own character and as foretelling what shall come to pass among his posterity in the last times. From this latter point of view the book partakes of the character of a prophetic-apocalyptic work. In six of the testaments, those of Reuben, Simeon, Judah, Dan, Naphthali and Joseph, there is a certain correspondence between our book and Gen. xlix. regarding the characters of the patriarchs; as for the remaining six patriarchs no such correspondence exists.
