Book Synopsis Fanning the Flames by : Dave Fanning
Download or read book Fanning the Flames written by Dave Fanning and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description - Long Dave Fanning's boyhood dream was to become a firefighter. Here are tales of a lost era of fire fighting using a hook and ladder to climb from one floor to the one above, where health and safety concerns for firefighters were not at the forefront, and where new forms of fire training were developed by him and his team. These are the stories of a legacy of firefighting in Liverpool, England, in an era that had challenges of the sort no longer faced by firefighters today. This was a time when more than 700 ships a week offloaded their often highly volatile cargoes in the docks of the River Mersey. It was a time when firefighters had to master the use of the hook and ladder to enter buildings ablaze, and when little regard for Health and Safety saw them wearing what were no more than the equivalent of gardening gloves as they undertook their duties. It is in this context that Dave Fanning brings us his memories of leading firefighting on Merseyside. Poignant, funny, and full of down-to-earth detail and valuable lessons for any leader of people, these stories bring to life the Liverpool of the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, with humour and insight typical of the people on Merseyside.

Book Synopsis Developing Firefighter Resiliency by : Bob Carpenter
Download or read book Developing Firefighter Resiliency written by Bob Carpenter and published by Fire Engineering Books. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Key Messages: -- This is important. -- You can do it. -- I won't give up on you. Training ordinary people to do extraordinary things requires an understanding of how we learn. Developing Firefighter Resiliency starts with the basic psychophysical aspects of learning. The fire service has unwittingly used a failure-based training model for many years. Hands-on training exercises are often based on unachievable objectives. Trainers are often not educated about the psychology of adult learning or the effect of stress during learning. Consequently, participants face learning activities with mastery-level skill requirement to succeed when competency has yet to be established. This amounts to a never-ending diet of tests without actual skill development. Accessing knowledge under extreme circumstances cannot be left to chance, because the penalty for failure is severe. This book provides the roadmap for a journey to train, establish relevancy for the lessons, develop competency in the skills, and capitalize on confidence to achieve mastery. We study the impact of a stressful environment on the ability to learn and function.

Download or read book Firefighters written by Dennis Smith and published by Crown. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unforgettable journey through the daily lives of the brave men and women who have made saving lives their profession. Dennis Smith, author of Report from Engine Co. 82, traveled across the country talking to dozens of America’s firefighters to put together this powerful collection of their own descriptions of their most dramatic and intense experiences on the job. Their stories, compiled here, are timeless testimonies to the human capacity for heroism and nobility. Focusing on the most courageous firefighters, from those who have been decorated for heroism to those who have been seriously injured, Firefighters presents the extraordinarily rich and rugged voices of men and women who fight urban building fires, who battle sweeping forest fires, who perform emergency rescues, and who face extreme danger and risk as part of their everyday lives. Sometimes brave, sometimes funny, sometimes bittersweet or filled with anger, these voices combine to make Firefighters both a riveting adventure drama and a moving chronicle of American heroism at its finest.
Book Synopsis Last Man Down by : Richard Picciotto
Download or read book Last Man Down written by Richard Picciotto and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2003-05-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first responder’s harrowing account of 9/11—the inspirational true story of an American hero who gave nearly everything for others during one of New York City’s darkest hours. On September 11, 2001, FDNY Battalion Chief Richard “Pitch” Picciotto answered the call heard around the world. In minutes, he was at Ground Zero of the worst terrorist attack on American soil, as the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center began to burn—and then to buckle. A veteran of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, Picciotto was eerily familiar with the inside of the North Tower. And it was there that he concentrated his rescue efforts. It was in its smoky stairwells where he heard and felt the South Tower collapse. He made the call for firemen and rescue workers to evacuate, while he stayed behind with a skeleton team of men to help evacuate a group of disabled and infirm civilians. And it was in the rubble of the North Tower where Picciotto found himself buried—for more than four hours after the building’s collapse.
Book Synopsis London Firefighter by : Stephen Dudeney
Download or read book London Firefighter written by Stephen Dudeney and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave and I crept up the stairs, the floor had burned through in places as had the floor above, the roof was gone so there was a bit of dull light. The floor was covered in rubble; tiles from the roof, burnt timber, cork and all sorts. Dave took the nozzle and we pushed forward along the floor. The smoke was tolerable, the heat was a different matter. As I breathed in it was searing my lungs, a bit like trying to breathe in over a boiling kettle, I was lying on the floor in a puddle of steaming water trying to find some cooler air. As Dave opened the nozzle we were engulfed in steam as the water cooled the superheated atmosphere above us. I buried my head a little lower and held on for dear life as Dave worked the jet around the large hallway, extinguishing the burning contents. We pushed further and tried making our way into a room on the right. I was suffering a bit now, and as if reading my mind, Dave pulled back and I pushed up to the nozzle. I opened it and aimed in the direction of the fire. I got some relief by breathing in the cool clean air that was being forced out of the nozzle with the water. Soon we had pushed a good way forward but we were taking a real beating. I could feel my skin scalding as the wet fire tunic steamed in the heat...
