Book excerpt: This book describes the wave characteristics of contact lines taking wind into consideration and discusses new methods for detecting catenary geometry, pantograph slide fault, and catenary support system faults. It also introduces wire-irregularity detection methods for catenary estimation, and discusses modern spectrum estimation tools for catenary. It is organized in three parts: the first discusses statistical characteristics of pantograph-catenary data, such as stationarity, periodicity, correlation, high-order statistical properties and wave characteristics of contact lines, which are the basis of pantograph-catenary relationship analysis. The second part includes geometry parameter detection and support-system fault detection in catenary, as well as slide-fault detection in pantographs, and presents some new detection algorithms and plans. The final part addresses catenary estimation, including detection of contact-line wire irregularities and estimation of catenary based on spectrum, and presents detection methods for contact-line irregularity and modern spectrum estimation tools for catenary.

This book focuses on these two key issues, bringing together a wealth of research to offer theoretical and technical support for rail operations and maintenance. In addition, it presents a comprehensive active safety assurance system for rail transportation, which includes the quantitative state identification and prediction of train components; rail transportation safety and reliability assessment methods; and rail transportation risk assessment at the rail networks level, which achieves the quantitative and high-precision monitoring of complex systems in real-time. In addition, it extends active safety based theory to safety prognostic analysis in the traffic system. Lastly, representative case studies verify that the theory is suitable for the actual traffic system.

Book excerpt: Guaranteeing a high system performance over a wide operating range is an important issue surrounding the design of automatic control systems with successively increasing complexity. As a key technology in the search for a solution, advanced fault detection and identification (FDI) is receiving considerable attention. This book introduces basic model-based FDI schemes, advanced analysis and design algorithms, and mathematical and control-theoretic tools. This second edition of Model-Based Fault Diagnosis Techniques contains: • new material on fault isolation and identification and alarm management; • extended and revised treatment of systematic threshold determination for systems with both deterministic unknown inputs and stochastic noises; • addition of the continuously-stirred tank heater as a representative process-industrial benchmark; and • enhanced discussion of residual evaluation which now deals with stochastic processes. Model-based Fault Diagnosis Techniques will interest academic researchers working in fault identification and diagnosis and as a text it is suitable for graduate students in a formal university-based course or as a self-study aid for practising engineers working with automatic control or mechatronic systems from backgrounds as diverse as chemical process and power engineering.

Book excerpt: Safety Theory and Technology of High-Speed Train Operation puts forward solutions for train dispatching and signal control. Frequent railway incidents have threatened the safety of rail transport. In 2013, more than 12 trains collided. In the same year, a Spanish train derailed due to speed, and two of China’s high-speed trains collided. In 2016, Germany and Italy both experienced serious train collisions. Global railway security is essential. Many accidents are caused by train dispatching errors and signal system failure. Chinese high-speed railway has developed very quickly and at a very large scale. However, many issues reagrding safety has not been addressed. This book considers the issue from the perspective of a system. A train operation control system structure is put forward in order to ensure safety. Five key technologies (namely system-level fail-safe, parallel monitoring, completeness of train control data, data sharing and fusion and prevention of common errors in monitoring), are proposed. In order to prevent collision, over-speed, derailment, and rear-end collision accidents, the concept and corresponding parallel monitoring technology of five core control items (train route, speed, tracking interval, temporary speed limit, train running state) is proposed. Puts forward solutions for train dispatching and signal control Views high-speed train safety and technology from a systems-theory perspective Describes five key technologies to ensure safety Proposes five parallel monitoring technologies to prevent collision, over-speed, derailment and rear-end collision incidents Considers the very quick and large-scale development of Chinese high-speed rail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, high-speed railways have become one of the most advanced and fast-developing branches of transportation. Unfortunately, when train speeds increase, the intensity of railway-generated noise and vibration generally become higher, presenting major environmental problems. Since operating train speeds are gradually increasing in all countries and this trend is likely to continue in the future, the knowledge and understanding of possible noise and vibration effects is vital to undertake possible mitigation measures. Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is a definitive reference work on this subject covering the numerous theoretical and practical questions that need to be answered. This comprehensive new book provides the reader with the most recent experimental data, combining, informative illustrations and authoritative information. It represents in one volume the views of leading international experts on the problem of noise and vibration from high-speed trains and suggests possible ways of reducing its environmental impact.Noise and vibration from high-speed trains is essential reading for all scientists and engineers working on prediction and remediation of railway noise and vibration. It is written specifically for environmental consultants, local authorities and designers of new railway lines and will also be an invaluable reference tool for university students and anybody concerned with topical environmental issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern railways are required to operate with a high level of safety and reliability. The weakest components are those which have the highest safety requirements and the lowest inherent reliability. Single-throw mechanical actuators, such as powered train doors, trainstops, level crossing barriers and switch actuators (point machines) are a group of components which have these properties. Preventative maintenance is carried out periodically in order to mitigate the risks of these actuators failing. This is inefficient: a condition-based maintenance approach would reduce costs and the risks to staff. However, this kind of maintenance requires very accurate automatic condition monitoring. Currently, the threshold-based condition monitoring systems installed in pilot schemes around the country do not have enough insight into actuator performance to detect incipient faults. These are hard to spot because their symptoms develop over a long period of time. It is uneconomical to carry out detailed analysis or modelling, or collect a large amount of training data, for each instance of a large group of assets. Therefore, the solution needed to establish diagnosis rules based on offline analysis, or training data from only one actuator. This thesis draws on previous work in qualitative trend analysis to build a diagnosis system which uses a combined approach of qualitative and quantitative analysis to transfer the knowledge gathered from one actuator to its fellows in service. The method used has been designed to use straightforward components, so that it can be more easily explained to users. Two case studies were carried out in order to verify the system's functions. Data were collected from real-life actuators, under simulation of incipient faults. The diagnosis system then operated on the data. The system's performance was almost as good with real-world data as it was with synthetic data. The system has been a success when operating on the data gathered under laboratory co.
