Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Touch is a fundamental element of dance. The (time) forms and contact zones of touch are means of expression both of self-reflexivity and the interaction of the dancers. Liberties and limits, creative possibilities and taboos of touch convey insights into the ‘aisthesis’ of the different forms of dance: into their dynamics and communicative structure, as well as into the production and regulation of affects. Touching and Being Touched assembles seventeen interdisciplinary papers focusing on the question of how forms and practices of touch are connected with the evocation of feelings. Are these feelings evoked in different ways in tango, Contact improvisation, European and Japanese contemporary dance? The contributors to this volume (dance, literature, and film scholars as well as philosophers and neuroscientists) provide in-depth discussions of the modes of transfer between touch and being touched. Drawing on the assumptions of various theories of body, emotion, and senses, how can we interpret the processes of tactile touch and of being touched emotionally? Is there a specific spectrum of emotions activated during these processes (within both the spectator and the dancer)? How can the relationship of movement, touch, and emotion be analyzed in relation to kinesthesia and empathy?

Book excerpt: John Baldessari, conceptual artist and teacher, has lived and worked in California all his life. Considered a pioneer of postmodern ideas in the 1970s, he came to prominence with his early text paintings and moved on to photographic images paired with text. He has maintained his interest in the relationship of words and imagery, of delighting in the absurd, and pointing out the irony in contemporary art theory for more than 35 years. Baldessari has been active as a printmaker since 1970; The Prints of John Baldessari, A Catalogue Raison marks the first comprehensive accounting of this tremendous body of work and the influence this artist has had on the international art world. AUTHORS: Sharon Coplan Hurowitz is a New York-based art consultant and prints researcher. Wendy Weitman, until 2007, was curator in the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she had worked since 1980. In addition to curating a number of important exhibitions, Ms. Weitman has taught and lectured widely on prints in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. SELLING POINTS: The first definitive study of print work of this prolific artist's career that has spanned nearly forty years Baldessari is a recipient of the Americans for the Arts' Lifetime Achievement Award This publication features recently completed work that has never been published 195 colour & 50 b/w illustrations

Book excerpt: One of the most important artistic movements in recent years is chronicled and showcased in this dynamic work.Born in Germany in the years following the collapse of the Communist regime, the New Leipzig School started when a group of classmates at the Leipzig Academy rediscovered figurative art. Their paintings reflected the melancholy that pervaded East Germany as it struggled with capitalism, high unemployment and depopulation. Fifteen year later, paintings by the Leipzig school and its related movement, Dresden Pop, are conquering the international art market. The authors take on this important trend one painter at a time. They examine each artist's oeuvre on its own merit and consider various factors behind the movements--the onset of the digital age, social disillusionment and individual protest. Breathtaking reproductions allow readers to form their own ideas about what constitutes and drives new German painting, and understand its significance around the world.

Book excerpt: Antje Majewski became best known through her series of photorealistic, figurative paintings, which grapple with existential questions like friendship, love, masquerade, and death. Her topics also revolve around the psychology of individuals in relation to society, history, and social norms. This comprehensive catalogue traces the many stages of her work, including paintings, photographs, videos, film, installation, and dance theatre. The art critic Dominic Eichler highlights the most important thematic threads in Majewski's oeuvre and shows “that in terms of thinking about the fantasy figures, performance, roles and costumes …, the theoretical backdrop is informed by a progressive form of feminism. In particular, Judith Butler's thesis about the importance of performance and performativity in the construction of gender should be taken into account.” The author Ingo Niermann claims that “whether (she) paints people in their everyday appearance or a staged one, she subordinates herself. Whatever can be seen stays with the people. They are the actual images whose real presentation is only a fleeting one.” Curator Sebastian Cichocki contributes a fierce foray into the supernatural world of a psychic, while Majewski's conversation with art historian Tanja Widmann reveals some of the personal and philosophical concerns underlying her practice. Published on the occasion of Majewski's same-titled exhibition at the Salzburger Kunstverein, September 25 – November 30, 2008. Contributors Sebastian Cichocki, Dominic Eichler, Ingo Niermann Conversation with Tanja Widmann
