Jahrhundert. Während Goethe die Verbindung des Ideellen mit dem Praktischen pries, zog sich, ausgehend von Humboldt, die Schule der Griechenverehrung aus den Bezirken des praktischen Lebens zurück und widmete sich dem ewig Wahren und Schönen. Das 19. Jahrhundert hat den Idealismus Humboldts und die Ausklammerung alles Zweckmäßigen, Nützlichen und Brauchbaren aus der Schulbildung jedoch nicht bestätigt. Der das Jahrhundert durchziehende Kampf des humanistischen Prinzips mit dem verachteten Prinzip des Realismus endete mit einem klaren Sieg des realistischen Gedankens: die Gymnasien mussten Realien akzeptieren und schließlich den Realschulen die Gleichberechtigung zugestehen. Die Forderung nach Gleichberechtigung bestimmte auch einen weiteren, für die deutsche Schulgeschichte bedeutsamen Konflikt: nach jahrzehntelangen Auseinandersetzungen der bürgerlichen Frauenbewegung mit der Regierung um die höhere Mädchenbildung vor allem im letzten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts den Frauen das Tor zum Abiturientenexamen und zum Studium ein Stück weit geöffnet.

Gemäß der von Humboldt angestrebten Gleichrangigkeit der Fächer Latein und Griechisch, Mathematik und Geschichte werden diese und die entsprechenden Lehrfächer sowie die Forschung an der Königsberger Universität detailliert betrachtet. Der Rezeption von Humboldts Schulkonzept in den baltischen Ostseeprovinzen ist ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet. Die Arbeit wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Gierschke-Dornburg-Preis 2021.
