Book excerpt: As millions continue to face a future of food poverty, lessons can be learned by considering how farmer cooperatives succeeded in improving India's food security. 'Operation Flood', which revitalised the Indian dairy industry between 1970 and 1996, was the world's largest development programme, however critics accused it of luring India to neocolonial dependence on European surpluses. Eventually the perils of reliance on food aid were managed by proper pricing policies that both benefited rural farming families and wiped out urban 'milk famines'. In 2008 the World Bank hailed the programme's success and now promotes similar schemes in Africa. A detailed understanding of India's White Revolution is therefore imperative in the context of its future use in the developing world.

Book excerpt: Australian feminist philosopher Val Plumwood coined the term “critical ecofeminism” to “situate humans in ecological terms and non-humans in ethical terms,” for “the two tasks are interconnected, and cannot be addressed properly in isolation from each other.” Variously using the terms “critical ecological feminism,” “critical anti-dualist ecological feminism,” and “critical ecofeminism,” Plumwood’s work developed amid a range of perspectives describing feminist intersections with ecopolitical issues—i.e., toxic production and toxic wastes, indigenous sovereignty, global economic justice, species justice, colonialism and dominant masculinity. Well over a decade before the emergence of posthumanist theory and the new materialisms, Plumwood’s critical ecofeminist framework articulates an implicit posthumanism and respect for the animacy of all earthothers, exposing the linkages among diverse forms of oppression, and providing a theoretical basis for further activist coalitions and interdisciplinary scholarship. Had Plumwood lived another ten years, she might have described her work as “Anthropocene Ecofeminism,” “Critical Material Ecofeminism,” “Posthumanist Anticolonial Ecofeminism”—all of these inflections are present in her work. Here, Critical Ecofeminism advances upon Plumwood’s intellectual, activist, and scholarly work by exploring its implications for a range of contemporary perspectives and issues--critical animal studies, plant studies, sustainability studies, environmental justice, climate change and climate justice, masculinities and sexualities. With the insights available through a critical ecofeminism, these diverse eco-justice perspectives become more robust.

Book excerpt: Livestock sector plays a significant role in the Indian economy particularly in reducing poverty among the weaker sections of the society. Livestock not only provides a continuous stream of income but also acts as natural capital assets for the poor in adverse conditions. India is having huge population of livestock but their production potential is below the global average. Besides this, a continuous rise in the demand of livestock products opens door for dissemination of latest innovative methods among livestock owners, farmers, farm women, etc in order to enhance livestock production potential. This requires a strong extension support with trained extension professionals, who may help farmers in identifying their problems, help them to find out solutions to these problems and provide them the required technical know-how with plenty of information. The primary objective of this book is to increase the proficiency of extension workers as well as improve their proficiency competence by acquainting them with the latest developments in livestock sector and enabling them in better understanding of the existing problems in the villages. This book is also helpful for graduate, postgraduate and doctorate students pursuing studies in veterinary dairy, agriculture, fisheries, and other related sciences and provides them a first hand information on important aspects related to contribution of livestock to national income, community development, panchayati raj, livestock development programmes, audio-visual aids, extension teaching methods, programme planning, adoption and diffusion process, livestock marketing as well as animal husbandry management and administration. We are sure that this book will be beneficial for professors, teachers, trainers, researchers and extension professionals engaged in veterinary and animal husbandry extension and other professional courses.

Book excerpt: India's 'Anand pattern' dairy co-operatives are widely held to be a developmental model for Asia, Africa and Latin America, but have been criticized for their limited benefits to the poorest, their effect on rural women's work, and their use of capital-intensive imported technology. This book assesses the Kheda dairy co-operative in Gujarat that supposedly inspired the Anand pattern, and uses case studies from another Indian state, Kerala, to question the drive to 'replicate Anand'. It discusses the long-established and successful Choryasi dairy co-operative (also in Gujarat), that uses intermediate technology but has not been adopted as a model. The book then moves to an African country, Zimbabwe, where the Dairy Development Programme has tried to learn both from the 'Anand pattern' and from critics, in its efforts to set up locally appropriate dairy cooperatives. Most studies of dairy co-operatives in India focus on the word 'dairy' - on milk, cows, and technical and organizational aspects, possibly because animal scientists and dairy technologists dominate the field. But what of 'co-operation', the complex economic, social and political process that can bring together different communities, castes, classes, households, genders and generations? This book tries to argue for a sustainable development which takes the human factor into account. A Matter of People is scholarly as conception and presentation but reads like an exciting novel.

Book excerpt: Introduction India being an agricultural country with most of population being engaged in primary activities needs to strengthen its rural base for balanced economic development. The prospects of creating a regional balance between the rural and urban sectors can be achieved through the proper exploitation and management of local resources and development of various agro-based industries. The new ventures should be made to develop the allied sectors i.e., agro-forestry, apiculture, pisciculture, sericulture, mushroom cultivation and dairy farming. These measures will help in income generation besides being able to provide employment to the large number of rural population. Milk production in India is predominantly the domain of small farmers in mixed farming system. Dairy enterprise plays a very vital role in the rural economy of India. It provides income and employment, not only to the workers section of the society, but also to the farming community of the country in general. Milk and its products, serves as one of the most important sources of food for all civilized nations. The highly developed and prosperous people consume the large quantity of milk and dairy products. India ranks first in number of animals and production of milk in the world. India succeeded in producing 132.4 million tons of milk in the year 2012-13 and became world’s largest milk producer. In 1991-92 the per capita availability was 178 gm. / day. The figure has reached up to 290 gm. /day in the year 2011-12. In dairy, India shares 15 Percent (2010) production in the world.
