Wallis Budge nel suo libro The Gods of the Egyptians (1969): “La nuova religione (cristianesimo) lì predicata da San Marco e dai suoi seguaci, ricorda molto, in tutti gli elementi essenziali, quel che era dell’esito del culto di Osiride, Iside e Horus”. Le somiglianze rilevate da Budge, e da tutti coloro che hanno confrontato l’allegoria egizia di Osiride/Iside/Horus con gli episodi del Vangelo, sono impressionanti. I due racconti sono praticamente identici, includendo per esempio elementi quali l’Immacolata Concezione, la nascita divina, le lotte contro il nemico nel deserto e la risurrezione dei morti alla vita eterna. La principale differenza tra le “due versioni” risiede nel fatto che il racconto evangelico è considerato storico, mentre il ciclo di Osiride/Iside/Horus è un’allegoria. Il messaggio spirituale dell’allegoria di Osiride/Iside/Horus nell’Antico Egitto e la rivelazione cristiana è esattamente lo stesso. Così lo studioso britannico A.N. Wilson sottolineò nel suo libro Jesus: “Il Gesù della storia e il Cristo della fede sono due esseri separati, con storie molto diverse. È difficile ricostruire la prima, e nel tentativo siamo propensi a fare un danno irreparabile alla seconda”. Questo libro dimostrerà che il “Gesù della storia”, il “Gesù della fede” e i principi del cristianesimo hanno tutti origine nell’Antico Egitto. E se ne parlerà senza causare alcun “danno irreparabile”, cosa che preoccupava A.N. Wilson, per due principali motivi: in primo luogo, perché la verità deve essere detta. In secondo luogo, perché spiegare i principi cristiani basandosi sul loro contesto originale nell’Antico Egitto, rafforzerà l’idealità del cristianesimo. Questo libro è composto da due parti: La prima parte dimostra che i racconti sul “Gesù della storia” si basano interamente sulla vita e la morte del faraone egizio Twt/Tut-Ankh-Amen. La seconda parte spiega che il “Gesù della fede” e i principi cristiani sono tutti di origine egizia – tanto l’essenza degli insegnamenti/del messaggio, quanto le feste religiose. C’è un’innegabile ironia e una profonda, radicata e indiscutibile verità nella citazione del profeta Osea “Fuori dall’Egitto ho chiamato mio Figlio”. Un’ironia davvero profonda. In 394/95, during the last four months of his life, the emperor Theodosius I ruled as sole Augustus over a united Roman Empire that had been divided between at least two emperors for most of the preceding one hundred years. A.D. 365/70–414?), an old-fashioned pagan Neoplatonist who studied under Hypatia at Alexandria, yet who in A.D. 410 became the Christian bishop of Ptolemais in Libya. Before accepting, however, he openly stated his objections to certain Christian dogmas. Was he a Christian or a "baptized Neoplatonist"? The generation of Synesius saw the rapid decline of paganism. Furthermore, the Constantinople he visited (A.D. 399–402) was a Greek-Christian Rome whose elites were classically educated. He returned home an ally of the city's Orthodox Christians. He tried to reconcile Neoplatonism with Christianity, but a study of his works demonstrates that he was only partially successful. Synesius is important for our understanding of the old aristocracy in Late Antiquity. His becoming a bishop completes the picture in which we finally see the ancient world transforming itself into the medieval world. The life of Synesius, one man of Late Antiquity, may be viewed as both the recapitulation and anticipation of all the major themes of Classical and Late Antiquity. Book excerpt: Hermetic theosophy, originally an offspring of Egyptian religion, spread throughout the ancient world from the Hellenistic age onwards and was welcomed by Christianity in Late Antiquity. Cultivated people in a Christian milieu were convinced that Hermetic piety and religion were the preparation, expressed by heathen imagery, of their own faith: Hermes, a wise and pious philosopher in Egypt in the time of Moses, received (so it was thought) the same revelation which would be manifested 1,000 years later by Christ. At the end of the third century AD, this belief did not perish with the end of the Roman Empire; rather, it was taken up and explored during the French Renaissance of the twelfth century. In the fifteenth century, Italian humanism, supported by the rediscovery of Greek language and literature, promoted a fresh new evaluation of the ancient Hermetic texts which continued to be considered and studied as pre-Christian documents. In the sixteenth century, new interpretations of Christian Hermetism were explored until this connection between pagan and Christian was increasingly criticized by scholars who argued that Hermetism was neither as ancient as was thought nor as close to Christianity. The theory was abandoned in scientific milieux from the seventeenth century onwards, whereas Hermetic theosophy, on the contrary, survived in esoteric circles.
