This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).

Download or read book Engineering Fracture Design written by H. Liebowitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture: An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: Engineering Fracture Design presents the development and status of knowledge on sudden, catastrophic failure of structures due to unexpected brittle fracture of component materials. This book provides information pertinent to the engineering fracture design as well as the microscopic and macroscopic fundamentals of fracture. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the evaluation of fracture tests. This text then presents an analysis of temperature effects on fracture. Other chapters consider the fracture and carrying capacity of long, slender columns and related topics. This book discusses as well the problems in connection with columns, beams, and plates, and experimental evidence to support theories proposed for describing the strength and stiffness of these elements. The final chapter presents an analysis of the problem of brittle fracture in weldments. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, students, and research workers in industrial organizations, education and research institutions, and various government agencies.

Download or read book Advances in Space Science and Technology written by Frederick I. Ordway and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 8 presents the possibility that what is recognized as lunar cratering was caused by endogenous, volcanic activity rather than by the more widely accepted meteoritic impact mechanism. This book provides an introduction to the technology of rocketry. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of lunar volcanism and the interpretation of the widespread phenomenon of cratering. This text then provides a comprehensive examination of one of the major components of the solid propellant rocket. Other chapters consider the many problems associated with design, construction, and testing of motor cases of the solid propellant rocket. This book presents as well a thorough examination of interplanetary mission planning covering such vital elements as the process of mission decision making based on model theory. The final chapter deals with the exploration of the planet Mars. This book is a valuable resource for geoscientists, astronomers, and geologists.
