Silvia, the elder, has until she is thirty to decide whether to marry or follow her inclination of entering a convent; and lovely, naive Vivienne must wait patiently or lose the money. The gentleman in her life will have her without the twenty-five thousand, but one is rich and one poor. Vivienne must grow into a women to decide her future; meanwhile her cousin George and her best friend, Ursula Mason, rekindle a romance blighted five years before by a misunderstanding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical novel provides fascinating insights into mysteries of our prehistoric past and present. It is a narrative blending of Bernard Cornwell action and Stephen King captivation that derives its fast paced drive by combining archaeological/anthropological discoveries with mythology and Genesis along with the author's own considerable deductive abilities and plot inventiveness. The first book of the Cruel Inheritance series - Birth and Destruction - begins nearly 12.000 years ago as Pandora's box is opened in an event that alters the fate of mankind. A pestilence emerges from the tumult created by the clash of melting, mile high, glaciers and erupting volcanoes, at the end of the ice age, that curses the Paleolithic people of the Wolf Band of the Spotted Leopard Clan who are led by their elders Jald and Shol. Evil has come to afflict them and they must contend with it as best they can but they are ill equipped to rid the world of this scourge. The Wolf Band's love, strength and courage lead them to inadvertently plant the seeds of civilization as their lives become awash in blood and misery. In the present day a prescient professor of archaeology hears the call, and the warnings, of his ancient ancestors and they lead him to incredible, yet horrific, discoveries and realizations. He gathers to his side Marty, his gifted, much younger wife, and the equally gifted, Derek, their intimate companion and prepares to free the human race from the infection that has cursed them for millennia. But first the professor must convince Marty and Derek to listen to and embrace the atavistic memories of their far distant ancestors that have haunted them all of their lives. Those ancestors are the ones who have laid this charge and responsibility upon their shoulders. If they fail then an ancient pestilence will rise to engulf the world again and all hope may be lost, for all time. They are reluctant warriors at best but he must convince them to at least try and rid the world of the contagion of evil. If you have doubts about the existence of inherent evil, or where it comes from, you will have no doubts when you finish the last page of this engrossing novel. There are surprising plot twists and unexpected turns in the path from then until now and the present is not as it is perceived to be. The journey is - as life is lived - unpredictable.

While it has been argued that rigid class structures have eroded in favor of greater social equality, The Son Also Rises proves that movement on the social ladder has changed little over eight centuries. Using a novel technique -- tracking family names over generations to measure social mobility across countries and periods -- renowned economic historian Gregory Clark reveals that mobility rates are lower than conventionally estimated, do not vary across societies, and are resistant to social policies. The good news is that these patterns are driven by strong inheritance of abilities and lineage does not beget unwarranted advantage. The bad news is that much of our fate is predictable from lineage. Clark argues that since a greater part of our place in the world is predetermined, we must avoid creating winner-take-all societies."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: A complex mystery of deception and betrayal that follows the court case of a young man set to hang for the murder of his father When a famed Oxford historian is found dead in his study one night, all evidence points to his son, Stephen. About to be disinherited from the family fortune, Stephen returns to home after a long estrangement—and it happens to be the night his father is shot to death. When his fingerprints are found on the murder weapon, Stephen’s guilt seems undeniable. But there were five other people in the manor house at the time, and as their stories slowly emerge—along with the revelation that the deceased man was involved in a deadly hunt for a priceless relic in Northern France at the end of World War II—the race is on to save Stephen from a death sentence. Everyone has a motive, and no one is telling the truth. Unwilling to sit by and watch the biased judge condemn Stephen to death, an ageing police inspector decides to travel from England to France to find out what really happened in that small French village in 1945—and what artifact could be so valuable it would be worth killing for. Author Simon Tolkien received rave reviews for his first legal thriller, The Final Witness. Now, in The Inheritance, Tolkien sharpens his craft even more, deftly weaving psychological suspense and family drama to create a mystery steeped in memories, betrayal, and the long shadow of the past. Part courtroom drama and part historical thriller, The Inheritance is a dark, dynamic thriller that tests the strength of blood ties, loyalty, and revenge.

The captivating story of Christopher, filled with his adventures, makes an exciting read. Excerpt "Christopher's experiences of driving were of a very limited nature, and certainly they did not embrace anything like this. He had no recollection of ever having travelled by train, and it was the question of pace that fascinated him, the rapid, 'easy swinging movement through the air, the fresh breeze rushing by, the distancing of humbler wayfarers, all gave him a strange sense of exhilaration. Years afterward, when flesh and blood were all too slow for him and he was one of the best motorists in England, if not in Europe, he used to recall the rapturous pleasure of that first drive of his, that first introduction to the mad, tense joy of speed that ever after held him in thrall."

Book excerpt: "What can be learned from musically encountering others beyond music? Quietude is an attempt to answer this question, an holistic ethnography of the expressive lives of Korean first and second-generation victims of the atomic bombing of Japan, focused on the everyday arts of living that they employ to make life possible and worthwhile. The book documents the practically unknown history of Korean experiences of the atomic bombs and their aftermath, focused on the large community of victims-former residents of Hiroshima and their children-living in Hapcheon, South Korea. It considers victims' uses of voice, speech, song, and movement in the struggle for national and global recognition, in the ongoing work of negotiating the traumatic past, and in the effort to consolidate and maintain selves and relationships in the present. It attempts to explain the multifaceted atmosphere of quiet that predominates in "Korea's Hiroshima" by focusing on the poetics of endurance, refusal, and self-effacement in the face of discrimination, the atomic experience, and its politicization"--
