Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rita Dove, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 and US poet Laureate from 1993 to 1995, appeals to a broad public by means of readings, stage productions, and the media. This work is the first monographic investigation of this major African American author's writing. The book examines the linguistic devices through which Rita Dove shapes her transcultural spaces and places, understood as a fusion of cultural backgrounds that provide 'a home in art'. This work explores not only the vast range of Dove's thematic and formal means, but also her interest in crossing boundaries, be they geographical, racial, religious, or marked by class, gender or genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thousands of low-income African-Americans, mostly women and children, began in 1976 to move out of Chicago's notorious public housing developments to its mostly white, middle-class suburbs." "They were part of the Gautreaux program, one of the largest court-ordered desegregation efforts in the country's history. Named for the Chicago activist Dorothy Gautreaux, the program formally ended in 1998, but is destined to play a vital role in national housing policy in years to come. In this book, Leonard Rubinowitz and James Rosenbaum tell the story of this unique experiment in racial, social, and economic integration, and examine the factors involved in implementing and sustaining mobility-based programs." "Today, with vouchers replacing public housing, the Gautreaux success story with its strong legacy is the most valuable record of the possibilities for poor people to enhance their life chances by relocating to places where opportunities are greater." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: The complex truth about the color line-its destructive effects, painful legacy, clandestine crossings, possible erasure-is revealed more often in private than in public and has sometimes been visited more easily by novelists than historians. In this tradition, Crossing the Color Line, a powerful collection of nineteen contemporary stories, speaks the unspoken, explores the hidden, and voices both fear and hope about relationships between blacks and whites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interracial sex mattered to the British colonial state in West Africa. In Crossing the Color Line, Carina E. Ray goes beyond this fact to reveal how Ghanaians shaped and defined these powerfully charged relations. The interplay between African and European perspectives and practices, argues Ray, transformed these relationships into key sites for consolidating colonial rule and for contesting its hierarchies of power. With rigorous methodology and innovative analyses, Ray brings Ghana and Britain into a single analytic frame to show how intimate relations between black men and white women in the metropole became deeply entangled with those between black women and white men in the colony in ways that were profoundly consequential. Based on rich archival evidence and original interviews, the book moves across different registers, shifting from the micropolitics of individual disciplinary cases brought against colonial officers who “kept” local women to transatlantic networks of family, empire, and anticolonial resistance. In this way, Ray cuts to the heart of how interracial sex became a source of colonial anxiety and nationalist agitation during the first half of the twentieth century.

The field has matured into a large body of work, which includes identifiable core results and techniques. The book presents a wide variety of ideas and techniques in topological graph theory, discrete geometry, and computer science. The first part of the text deals with traditional crossing number, crossing number values, crossing lemma, related parameters, computational complexity, and algorithms. The second part includes the rich history of alternative crossing numbers, the rectilinear crossing number, the pair crossing number, and the independent odd crossing number. It also includes applications of the crossing number outside topological graph theory. Aimed at graduate students and professionals in both mathematics and computer science The first book of its kind devoted to the topic Authored by a noted authority in crossing numbers

Book excerpt: Eric Law believes that we are called by God to actively seek encounters with people who are different from us because at the crossings of our differences of race, culture, gender, sexual orientations, ability, economic class, and theology, lies the opportunity to widen our understanding of the gospel. But how do we open our hearts and our minds to such pluralism and live as God intends us to live? How can we be transformed by our differences as we seek to align ourselves with God? Eric Law invites readers to follow him on a journey of discovery, a path to connect with Christ's way, truth, and life. He encourages us to stop denying the conflicts that arise out of the differences within us and between us and to name these conflicts, allowing differing perspectives to affirm, enrich, or challenge one another. He proposes practical disciplines, models, and techniques to help us communicate openly, honestly, and without judgment with ourselves, with others, and with nature. Law shares his personal stories and experiences and calls us to explore our own stories, frameworks, and God-concepts that we may grow in and live the Good News. For those called to serve in God's church, The Word at the Crossings includes appendices with specific exercises and techniques for Christian educators and pastors, including a sermon preparation model.
