Book excerpt: Val Plumwood was an eminent environmental philosopher and activist who was prominent in the development of radical ecophilosophy from the early 1970s until her death in 2008. Her book Feminism and the Mastery of Nature (1992) has become a classic. In 1985 she was attacked by a crocodile while kayaking alone in the Kakadu national park in the Northern Territory. She was death rolled three times before being released from the crocodile’s jaws. She crawled for hours through swamp with appalling injuries before being rescued. The experience made her well placed to write about cultural responses to death and predation. The first section of The Eye of the Crocodile consists of chapters intended for a book on crocodiles that remained unfinished at the time of Val’s death. The remaining chapters are previously published papers brought together to form an overview of Val’s ideas on death, predation and nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most important political movements of the late twentieth century are those of environmentalism and feminism. In this book, Val Plumwood argues that feminist theory has an important opportunity to make a major contribution to the debates in political ecology and environmental philosophy. Feminism and the Mastery of Nature explains the relation between ecofeminism, or ecological feminism, and other feminist theories including radical green theories such as deep ecology. Val Plumwood provides a philosophically informed account of the relation of women and nature, and shows how relating male domination to the domination of nature is important and yet remains a dilemma for women.

Download or read book When a Crocodile Eats the Sun written by Peter Godwin and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his father's heart attack in 1984, Peter Godwin began a series of pilgrimages back to Zimbabwe, the land of his birth, from Manhattan, where he now lives. On these frequent visits to check on his elderly parents, he bore witness to Zimbabwe's dramatic spiral downwards into the jaws of violent chaos, presided over by an increasingly enraged dictator. And yet long after their comfortable lifestyle had been shattered and millions were fleeing, his parents refuse to leave, steadfast in their allegiance to the failed state that has been their adopted home for 50 years. Then Godwin discovered a shocking family secret that helped explain their loyalty. Africa was his father's sanctuary from another identity, another world. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun is a stirring memoir of the disintegration of a family set against the collapse of a country. But it is also a vivid portrait of the profound strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

Sean loves camping and fishing with his extended family, including his two uncles, Uncle Spook and Uncle Whistler. He'd love to go night fishing and croc hunting with the grown-ups, but is always told that he's too small. Early one morning he takes things into his own hands and sneaks out of the tent and down the river to check the fishing lines. A line tied to a big old fallen tree is moving round and round in the water. It's a fish! Excited, Sean walks out along the tree to pull it in. But unknown to him, he's being watched too, by a cold, sleepy crocodile. Luckily Uncle Spook comes to Sean's rescue with his spear-gun, and the two make a pact not to tell Mum and Dad. Sean finally has a nickname, just like Uncle Whistler and Uncle Spook. It's 'Croc Bait'. But only Sean and Uncle Spook know the story behind it!
