Non siamo che mediocri rappresentanti delle nostre rispettive fedi, cui contravveniamo più spesso di quanto non crediamo.» Mohandas K. Gandhi nacque a Porpandar, in India, nel 1869. Dal 1893 fino al 1914 visse in Sudafrica, dove lottò per i diritti civili della comunità indiana, sperimentando quei metodi non-violenti che lo avrebbero reso celebre in tutto il mondo. Tornato in India, lanciò la grande campagna di disobbedienza civile contro le autorità inglesi che, dopo oltre venticinque anni, portò il Paese all’indipendenza. Il Mahatma (Grande anima) morì nel 1948, vittima di un fanatico indù. His insights have been particularly important in conceptualizing the creation of meaning and understanding the function of art and literature in society, and they have enriched the work of such diverse figures as Paul Ricoeur, Stephen Greenblatt, Umberto Eco, Wolfgang Iser, Julia Kristeva, and Frederic Jameson. In this volume, edited by Andreas Schönle, contributors extend Lotman's theories to a number of fields.
