Book excerpt: Christianity Today's Book of the Year Award Logos Association Bookstore Award Bookwi.se's Favorite Books of the Year Outreach Magazine Resource of the Year "Be quick to listen, slow to speak." —James 1:19 How would our lives change if we approached every experience with the intention of listening first? In this noisy, distracting world, it is difficult to truly hear. People talk past each other, eager to be heard but somehow deaf to what is being said. Listening is an essential skill for healthy relationships, both with God and with other people. But it is more than that: listening is a way of life. Adam McHugh places listening at the heart of our spirituality, our relationships and our mission in the world. God himself is the God who hears, and we too can learn to hear what God may be saying through creation, through Scripture, through people. By cultivating a posture of listening, we become more attentive and engaged with those around us. Listening shapes us and equips us to be more attuned to people in pain and more able to minister to those in distress. Our lives are qualitatively different—indeed, better—when we become listeners. Heed the call to the listening life, and hear what God is doing in you and the world.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Book excerpt: Jesus called this ordinary man for an extraordinary purpose. Simon the fisherman would become Peter the Rock. This outspoken Galilean would lead Christ’s church, stand strong in the face of persecution, and even refuse to waver when faced with death. Unshakable Faith is an eight-session Bible study that explores the life and teachings of the Apostle Peter. Participants will be eye witnesses to Peter’s spiritual growth as God strengthens and matures his fragile faith. They will discover eight key "faith traits" God developed in Peter as he followed Christ and learned from Him. Participants will walk with Peter as he walked with Jesus. They will learn what Peter learned. Then they’ll be challenged to apply it to their own lives. Study participants will not only gain a solid knowledge of Peter’s life and teaching, they will also build a foundation on which God can grow an unshakable faith that will weather every storm they encounter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theology and ethics of land use, especially the practices of modern industrialized agriculture, in light of critical biblical exegesis. Nine interrelated essays explore the biblical writers' pervasive concern for the care of arable land against the background of the geography, social structures, and religious thought of ancient Israel. This approach consistently brings out neglected aspects of texts, both poetry and prose, that are central to Jewish and Christian traditions. Rather than seeking solutions from the past, Davis creates a conversation between ancient texts and contemporary agrarian writers; thus she provides a fresh perspective from which to view the destructive practices and assumptions that now dominate the global food economy. The biblical exegesis is wide-ranging and sophisticated; the language is literate and accessible to a broad audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three primary purposes of a religious prayer. 1. To refresh your remembrance and awareness of God. 2. To bring your wandering mind into the present moment. 3. To understand the meaning of the prayer and imbibe its teachings into your life in order to further your spiritual progress. By God's grace, presented to you here is the translation of the REHRAS SAHIB into English. At the end of the translation, offered to you is the Transliteration of REHRAS SAHIB, for those who may wish to recite as a prayer in the original Gurumukhi language. The REHRAS SAHIB is the evening prayer in Sikhism. It is recited at the end of a working day, around sunset. This evening prayer is recited by many Sikhs after a hard days work. Praying after a hard day refreshes both body and mind. Five different Gurus contributed to the evening prayer - Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Each one enlightens another aspect of God. The Benti Chaupai is Guru Gobind Singh Ji's personal prayer for protection and is said to liberate the soul. The recitation of REHRAS SAHIB adds energy to one’s body and mind. It allows one to conclude the day and thank the Almighty. The verse speaks of the greatness of Waheguru (God) and the ways in which ones actions will assist in attaining spiritual elevation. This prayer assists the person when he or she is weak physically, or financially, or with any other material and earthly matters. When you feel hopeless, or gloomy, it will elevate you mentally and give you a fresh and positive view of things. The REHRAS SAHIB as recorded in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji contains hymns of only Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The compositions of Guru Gobind Singh Ji were added in REHRAS SAHIB in the late 19th century. This was later approved by the supreme Sikh religious body.
