Book excerpt: In this power we show how to compute the parameter space [italic capital]X for the versal deformation of an isolated singularity ([italic capital]V, 0) under the assumptions [italic]dim [italic capital]V [greater than or equal to symbol] 4, depth {0} [italic capital]V [greater than or equal to symbol] 3, from the CR-structure on a link [italic capital]M of the singularity. We do this by showing that the space [italic capital]X is isomorphic to the space (denoted here by [script capital]K[subscript italic capital]M) associated to [italic capital]M by Kuranishi in 1977. In fact we produce isomorphisms of the associated complete local rings by producing quasi-isomorphisms of the controlling differential graded Lie algebras for the corresponding formal deformation theories.

Book excerpt: This volume studies the behaviour of a random heat kernel associated with a stochastic partial differential equation, and gives short-time expansion of this heat kernel. The author finds that the dominant exponential term is classical and depends only on the Riemannian distance function. The second exponential term is a work term and also has classical meaning. There is also a third non-negligible exponential term which blows up. The author finds an expression for this third exponential term which involves a random translation of the index form and the equations of Jacobi fields. In the process, he develops a method to approximate the heat kernel to any arbitrary degree of precision.

Book excerpt: In this volume, a new functor $H^2_{ab}(K,G)$ of abelian Galois cohomology is introduced from the category of connected reductive groups $G$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$ to the category of abelian groups. The abelian Galois cohomology and the abelianization map$ab^1:H^1(K,G) \rightarrow H^2_{ab}(K,G)$ are used to give a functorial, almost explicit description of the usual Galois cohomology set $H^1(K,G)$ when $K$ is a number field.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are interested in the time-asymptotic behavior of solutions to viscous conservation laws. Through the pointwise estimates for the Green's function of the linearized system and the analysis of coupling of nonlinear diffusion waves, we obtain explicit expressions of the time-asymptotic behavior of the solutions. This yields optimal estimates in the integral norms. For most physical models, the viscosity matrix is not positive definite and the system is hyperbolic-parabolic, and not uniformly parabolic. This implies that the Green's function may contain Dirac [lowercase Greek]Delta-functions. When the corresponding inviscid system is non-strictly hyperbolic, the time-asymptotic state contains generalized Burgers solutions. These are illustrated by applying our general theory to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is about extended affine Lie algebras (EALA's) and their root systems. EALA's were introduced by Hoegh-Krohn and Torresani under the name irreducible quasi-simple Lie algebras. The major objective is to develop enough theory to provide a firm foundation for further study of EALA's. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to establishing some basic structure theory. It includes a proof of the fact that, as conjectured by Kac, the invariant symmetric bilinear form on an EALA can be scaled so that its restriction to the real span of the root system is positive semi-definite. The second chapter studies extended affine root systems (EARS) which are an axiomatized version of the root systems arising from EALA's. The concept of a semilattice is used to give a complete description of EARS. In the final chapter, a number of new examples of extended affine Lie algebras are given. The concluding appendix contains an axiomatic characterization of the nonisotropic roots in an EARS in a more general context than the one used in the rest of the paper. Features: Provides a foundation for the study of an important class of Lie algebras that generalizes the class of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras Includes material on Lie algebras and on root systems that can be read independently.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author introduces and studies the construction of the crossed product of a von Neumann algebra $M = \int _X M(x)d\mu (x)$ by an equivalence relation on $X$ with countable cosets. This construction is the generalization of the construction of the crossed product of an abelian von Neumann algebra by an equivalence relation introduced by J. Feldman and C. C. Moore. Many properties of this construction are proved in the general case. In addition, the generalizations of the Spectral Theorem on Bimodules and of the theorem on dilations are proved.

Book excerpt: In this work, the author defines the $\Gamma$ equivariant form of Berezin quantization, where $\Gamma$ is a discrete lattice in $PSL(2, \mathbb R)$. The $\Gamma$ equivariant form of the quantization corresponds to a deformation of the space $\mathbb H/\Gamma$ ($\mathbb H$ being the upper halfplane). The von Neumann algebras in the deformation (obtained via the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction from the trace) are type $II_1$ factors. When $\Gamma$ is $PSL(2, \mathbb Z)$, these factors correspond (in the setting considered by K. Dykema and independently by the author, based on the random matrix model of D. Voiculescu) to free group von Neumann algebras with a 'fractional number of generators'. The number of generators turns out to be a function of Planck's deformation constant. The Connes cyclic $2$-cohomology associated with the deformation is analyzed and turns out to be (by using an automorphic forms construction) the coboundary of an (unbounded) cycle.

Book excerpt: This book provides a unified treatment for the study of the existence of equilibria of abstract economics in topological vector spaces from the viewpoint of Ky Fan minimax inequalities, which strongly depend on his infinite dimensional version of the classical Knaster, Kuratowski and Mazurkiewicz Lemma (KKM Lemma) in 1961. Studied are applications of general system versions of minimax inequalities and generalized quasi-variational inequalities, and random abstract economies and its applications to the system of random quasi-variational inequalities are given.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If $k$ is a field, $T$ an analytic indeterminate over $k$, and $n_1, \ldots, n_h$ are natural numbers, then the semigroup ring $A = k[[T^{n_1}, \ldots, T^{n_h}]]$ is a Noetherian local one-dimensional domain whose integral closure, $k[[T]]$, is a finitely generated $A$-module. There is clearly a close connection between $A$ and the numerical semigroup generated by $n_1, \ldots, n_h$. More generally, let $A$ be a Noetherian local domain which is analytically irreducible and one-dimensional (equivalently, whose integral closure $V$ is a DVR and a finitely generated $A$-module). As noted by Kunz in 1970, some algebraic properties of $A$ such as ``Gorenstein'' can be characterized by using the numerical semigroup of $A$ (i.e., the subset of $N$ consisting of all the images of nonzero elements of $A$ under the valuation associated to $V$ ). This book's main purpose is to deepen the semigroup-theoretic approach in studying rings A of the above kind, thereby enlarging the class of applications well beyond semigroup rings. For this reason, Chapter I is devoted to introducing several new semigroup-theoretic properties which are analogous to various classical ring-theoretic concepts. Then, in Chapter II, the earlier material is applied in systematically studying rings $A$ of the above type. As the authors examine the connections between semigroup-theoretic properties and the correspondingly named ring-theoretic properties, there are some perfect characterizations (symmetric $\Leftrightarrow$ Gorenstein; pseudo-symmetric $\Leftrightarrow$ Kunz, a new class of domains of Cohen-Macaulay type 2). However, some of the semigroup properties (such as ``Arf'' and ``maximal embedding dimension'') do not, by themselves, characterize the corresponding ring properties. To forge such characterizations, one also needs to compare the semigroup- and ring-theoretic notions of ``type''. For this reason, the book introduces and extensively uses ``type sequences'' in both the semigroup and the ring contexts.
