Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a rigorous account of quantum gauge field theory for bundles (both trivial and non-trivial) over compact surfaces. The Euclidean quantum field measure describing this theory is constructed and loop expectation values for a broad class of Wilson loop configurations are computed explicitly. Both the topology of the surface and the topology of the bundle are encoded in these loop expectation values. The effect of well-behaved area - preserving homeomorphisms of the surface is to take these loop expectation values into those for the pullback bundle. The quantum gauge field measure is constructed by conditioning an infinite-dimensional Gaussian measure to satisfy constraints imposed by the topologies of the surface and of the bundle. Holonomies, in this setting, are defined by interpreting the usual parallel-transport equation as a stochastic differential equation.

Book excerpt: In the 19 years which passed since the first edition was published, several important developments have taken place in the theory of surfaces. The most sensational one concerns the differentiable structure of surfaces. Twenty years ago very little was known about differentiable structures on 4-manifolds, but in the meantime Donaldson on the one hand and Seiberg and Witten on the other hand, have found, inspired by gauge theory, totally new invariants. Strikingly, together with the theory explained in this book these invariants yield a wealth of new results about the differentiable structure of algebraic surfaces. Other developments include the systematic use of nef-divisors (in ac cordance with the progress made in the classification of higher dimensional algebraic varieties), a better understanding of Kahler structures on surfaces, and Reider's new approach to adjoint mappings. All these developments have been incorporated in the present edition, though the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten theory only by way of examples. Of course we use the opportunity to correct some minor mistakes, which we ether have discovered ourselves or which were communicated to us by careful readers to whom we are much obliged.

Book excerpt: In 1989, Edward Witten discovered a deep relationship between quantum field theory and knot theory, and this beautiful discovery created a new field of research called Chern-Simons theory. This field has the remarkable feature of intertwining a large number of diverse branches of research in mathematics and physics, among them low-dimensional topology, differential geometry, quantum algebra, functional and stochastic analysis, quantum gravity, and string theory. The 20-year anniversary of Witten's discovery provided an opportunity to bring together researchers working in Chern-Simons theory for a meeting, and the resulting conference, which took place during the summer of 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, included many of the leading experts in the field. This volume documents the activities of the conference and presents several original research articles, including another monumental paper by Witten that is sure to stimulate further activity in this and related fields. This collection will provide an excellent overview of the current research directions and recent progress in Chern-Simons gauge theory.

After presenting the basic facts of the theory of compact Riemann surfaces and the representation theory of affine Lie algebras in Chapters 1 and 2, conformal blocks for pointed Riemann surfaces with coordinates are constructed in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 the sheaf of conformal blocks associated to a family of pointed Riemann surfaces withcoordinates is constructed, and in Chapter 5 it is shown that this sheaf supports a projective flat connection-one of the most important facts of conformal field theory. Chapter 6 is devoted to the study of the detailed structure of the conformal field theory over $\mathbb{P}1$.Recently it was shown that modular functors can be constructed from conformal field theory, giving an interesting relationship between algebraic geometry and topological quantum field theory. This book provides a timely introduction to an intensively studied topic of conformal field theory with gauge symmetry by a leading algebraic geometer, and includes all the necessary techniques and results that are used to construct the modular functor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir we present a new construction and new properties of the Yang-Mills measure in two dimensions. This measure was first introduced for the needs of quantum field theory and can be described informally as a probability measure on the space of connections modulo gauge transformations on a principal bundle. We consider the case of a bundle over a compact orientable surface. Our construction is based on the discrete Yang-Mills theory of which we give a full acount. We are able to take its continuum limit and to define a pathwise multiplicative process of random holonomy indexed by the class of piecewise embedded loops. We study in detail the links between this process and a white noise and prove a result of asymptotic independence in the case of a semi-simple structure group. We also investigate global Markovian properties of the measure related to the surgery of surfaces.

Book excerpt: Mathematical gauge theory studies connections on principal bundles, or, more precisely, the solution spaces of certain partial differential equations for such connections. Historically, these equations have come from mathematical physics, and play an important role in the description of the electro-weak and strong nuclear forces. The use of gauge theory as a tool for studying topological properties of four-manifolds was pioneered by the fundamental work of Simon Donaldson in theearly 1980s, and was revolutionized by the introduction of the Seiberg-Witten equations in the mid-1990s. Since the birth of the subject, it has retained its close connection with symplectic topology. The analogy between these two fields of study was further underscored by Andreas Floer's constructionof an infinite-dimensional variant of Morse theory that applies in two a priori different contexts: either to define symplectic invariants for pairs of Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold, or to define topological This volume is based on lecture courses and advanced seminars given at the 2004 Clay Mathematics Institute Summer School at the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics in Budapest, Hungary. Several of the authors have added a considerable amount of additional material tothat presented at the school, and the resulting volume provides a state-of-the-art introduction to current research, covering material from Heegaard Floer homology, contact geometry, smooth four-manifold topology, and symplectic four-manifolds. Book excerpt: The ideas and principles of stochastic analysis have managed to penetrate into various fields of pure and applied mathematics in the last 15 years; it is particularly true for mathematical physics. This volume provides a wide range of applications of stochastic analysis in fields as varied as statistical mechanics, hydrodynamics, Yang-Mills theory and spin-glass theory. The proper concept of stochastic dynamics relevant to each type of application is described in detail here. Altogether, these approaches illustrate the reasons why their dissemination in other fields is likely to accelerate in the years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawson's expository lectures, presented at a CBMS Regional Conference held in Santa Barbara in August 1983, provide an indepth examination of the recent work of Simon Donaldson, and is of special interest to both geometric topologists and differential geometers. This work has excited particular interest, in light of Mike Freedman's recent profound results: the complete classification, in the simply connected case, of compact topological 4-manifolds.Arguing from deep results in gauge field theory, Donaldson has proved the nonexistence of differentiable structures on certain compact 4-manifolds. Together with Freedman's results, Donaldson's work implies the existence of exotic differentiable structures in $\mathbb R^4$-a wonderful example of the results of one mathematical discipline yielding startling consequences in another. The lectures are aimed at mature mathematicians with some training in both geometry and topology, but they do not assume any expert knowledge. In addition to a close examination of Donaldson's arguments, Lawson also presents, as background material, the foundation work in gauge theory (Uhlenbeck, Taubes, Atiyah, Hitchin, Singer, et al.) which underlies Donaldson's work.
