Book excerpt: Geographic information systems represent an exciting and rapidly expanding technology via which spatial data may be captured, stored, retrieved, displayed, manipulated and analysed. Applications of this technology include detailed inventories of land use parcels. Spatial patterns of disease, geodemographics, environmental management and macroscale inventories of global resources. The impetus for this book is the relative lack of research into the integration of spatial analysis and GIS, and the potential benefits in developing such an integration. From a GIS perspective, there is an increasing demand for systems that do something other than display and organize data. From a spatial analytical perspective, there are advantages to linking statistical methods and mathematical models to the database and display capabilities of a GIS. Although the GIS may not be absolutely necessary for spatial analysis, it can facilitate such an analysis and moreover provide insights that might otherwise have been missed. The data are used by governments to make decisions about land development, business activities, regulatory compliance, emergency response, and law enforcement. In 1980, a National Research Council book called for nationally integrated land parcel data, but despite major progress in the development of land parcel databases in many local jurisdictions, little progress has been made toward a national system. National Land Parcel Data looks at the current status of land parcel data in the United States. The book concludes that nationally integrated land parcel data is necessary, feasible, and affordable. It provides recommendations for establishing a practical framework for sustained intergovernmental coordination and funding required to overcome the remaining challenges and move forward.

The globally dispersed, intricately integrated, and hyper-complex socio-economic-ecological system is d- ficult to analyze, comprehend and communicate without effective visualization tools. Given that planners are at the frontlines in the effort to prepare as well as build res- ience in the impacted communities, appropriate visualization tools are indispensable for effective planning. Second, planners have largely been slow to incorporate the advances in visuali- tion research emerging from other domains of inquiry. The research on visualizing 3-dimensional environments have now entered the mainstream of computer science with a number of highly cited articles. Other disciplines, such as graphic design, geography and cartography have also lead in the development of new forms of vi- alization and communication, both conceptually and technologically. In contrast, the literature on modeling and visualization in planning has relied heavily on g- graphic information systems (GIS) tools that continue to provide two-dimensional spatial maps in formats not significantly different from those of a decade ago. This is not to suggest that research on planning support systems and GIS have been stagnant. Integrated models of transportation-land use-environment have become more sophisticated and several operational models are currently in use. Regardless, visualization research in planning has not kept pace with these developments. This volume attempts to redress this gap in the planning literature.
