The study was centered on the areas concern; profile of the teachers and learners; results of the Periodical Tests in the five core subjects; extent of the factors affecting the academic achievement of the learners as to learners themselves, family, learning environment and teachers. The Descriptive Method was used employing the questionnaires to assess the achievement profile of the Grade 6 learners. Treatment of the data used statistical tools of percentage, weighted mean, and test of significant relationship. It was found out that majority of the respondents were 11 years of age and females; parents’ highest educational attainment was High School Graduate; had combined family income within the range of Php 5 000 – Php 10 000; 7 and above members in the family; and were living in a duplex. The result of the Periodical Test in the five core subjects were interpreted as Low Mastery. All of the results did not meet the Planning Standards of 75% Performance Level (PL) as prescribed by the Department of Education (DepEd). Moreover, the study reveals that the identified factors – learners, family, school, and teachers affected the academic achievement of the learners in school. To improve the abovementioned performances of the learners, learning worksheets are proposed to be used.

The purpose of this study is to explore the connection between the development of students' creativity and problem-solving skills to academic achievement. This study examines schools that emphasize the development of students' problem-solving skills by employing project-based learning (PBL) as a core method of instruction, and its impact on students' academic achievement in English Language Arts and in mathematics. This study also examines the impact of the different methods of instruction on the school environment, which can be one of the most important factors affecting student learning.The target population for this quantitative study are 4th and 8th grade students in an urban public-school system receiving instruction, either primarily through a traditional method of instruction or through instruction employing the project-based learning method. In the study, the results of The New York State Grade 4 and Grade 8 English Language Arts Test and the New York State Mathematics Test, reflecting students' academic achievement, from all 50 elementary schools (19 PBL, 31 traditional) and 22 middle schools (12 PBL, 10 traditional) in two NYC districts were analyzed. Findings from this study revealed that there were statistically significant differences on both the NYS ELA Test and the NYS Math Test between the two groups (PBL vs. traditional) for both 4th grade and 8th grade students. To examine the impact of the different instructional approaches on the school environment, results of the NYC School Survey data on subareas of Rigorous Instruction and School Environment were analyzed. Findings from this analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the instructional approach employed and the Quality of Student Discussion. Moreover, there was statistically significant correlation between the instructional approach employed and Supportive Environment of High Expectations. The results from this study provides an exciting illustration of a strong positive correlation between PBL, an instruction approach that focuses on the development of students' creativity and problem-solving skills, and academic achievement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which student engagement and academic achievement were associated with exposure to different modes of instruction; specifically technology enhanced environments vs. traditional FACE-TO-FACE environments. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in October 2013 at a local community college in Charlotte, NC. The Class Level Survey of Student Engagement (CLASSE) was administered to collect valid and reliable variables relating to student engagement from a convenience sample consisting of 80 volunteers enrolled in the Medical Science and Science divisions. Other variables were collected using the Demographic Questionnaire, and the Instructional Environment Questionnaire. The community college also provided secondary archival data consisting of the frequency distributions of grades achieved by 4102 students in October 2013. The cross-sectional survey revealed that students may be more engaged by technology than by traditional FACE-TO-FACE instruction; however, educational practices such as preparing for classes, taking notes, outside reading, and doing homework, with low levels of absence were relatively more important predictors of student engagement than the use of technology. Analysis of the secondary data indicated that the frequencies of grades achieved by students taught in technology enhanced environments are significantly different to the frequencies of grades achieved by students taught in a traditional classroom environment; however, there were no consistent patterns. The results indicated that multiple factors, in combination with technology, influence student engagement and achievement. Educational institutions need to continue to provide reassessments of their perspectives using both traditional FACE-TO-FACE and technology enhanced modes of instruction, and further research is necessary to identify long term trends.

Book excerpt: In response to the continued pressure placed on American public schools to increase academic achievement, some schools have begun to reorganize instructional environments in an effort to improve student outcomes. The current study examined one such elementary school that implemented a departmentalized model of instruction in fourth and fifth-grade classrooms in an effort to improve student learning. This longitudinal, cross-sectional study followed a sample of students and teachers over a two-year period in an attempt to ascertain how departmentalizing in the elementary school affected student and teacher perceptions and academic achievement among students in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade. Student perceptions of their school, teachers, peers, and academic performance were measured using surveys and standardized achievement test scores were collected. Teacher attitudes toward departmentalization were also measured using surveys. A factor analysis of student survey results with Varimax rotation resulted in ten factors that revealed a consistent pattern of change in student perceptions when correlated. A consistent relationship between students' academic achievement and perceptions at each grade level was not found. Results suggested that students who began switching classes in elementary school had positive perceptions of their teachers and of themselves as social beings in school. Perceptions of their academic abilities, however, separated from their perceptions of their teachers over time. In contrast, students with one teacher in self-contained classrooms had positive perceptions of their teachers. These students' perceptions of their academic abilities and perceptions of themselves as social beings in school were connected to their perceived teacher-student relationships. Elementary teachers expressed concern over meeting their students' emotional needs, but otherwise reported positive attitudes toward their abilities to teach and meet their students' academic needs in a departmentalized setting. Teachers at the elementary school and the middle school felt that students who switched classes in elementary school were more prepared when they got to middle school and adjusted more quickly than students who came from self-contained elementary classrooms.

Book excerpt: Students transitioning from middle school to high school often experience academic difficulty in the ninth grade. The discontinuance between the two systems gives rise to the need for students to adapt to new academic environments. Academic failure or success is a predictor of high school graduation. Research reveals the personal characteristics of students influence successful adaptation to this transition and that the academic achievement of students depends upon the design of the learning environment. This goal of this study was to examine whether the student characteristic of cognitive autonomy showed correlation to academic achievement during the ninth grade. This study also examined the relationships of non-cognitive characteristics of students to academic achievement. A sample of 458 ninth-grade students in a suburban high school participated in this study. The student participants were representative of a diverse community, allowing for the personal non-cognitive measures of students to include ethnicity, language proficiency, and gender. Methodology included administration of a survey to the ninth-grade student population at the selected school. We entered the resulting survey data and demographic information into a statistical program, and academic information for each student was obtained from the school's student information database. Using a variety of statistical analyses, we disaggregated the data and examined for patterns giving indications of the relevance of student characteristics to their academic achievement. Specifically outlined in this study are the mean values of disaggregated data and correlations between cognitive characteristics, non-cognitive characteristics, the learning environment, and student academic achievement. The results of the study indicated the characteristic of cognitive autonomy to have minimal influence on student academic achievement while non-cognitive characteristics of students showed stronger correlation to academic performance. The resulting implications from this study centered on improving teacher understanding of student characteristics and the resulting need to alter instructional practices. Further implications arise for district and site leaders and center on school structure, staff development, and budget considerations. While centered on the ninth-grade transition point, the implications from this study can be scaled to include further aspects of the high school system.
