Book excerpt: China's recent economic transformation and integration into the world economy has coincided with increasing pressure for corporate law reform to make corporate social responsibility (CSR) integral to business and management strategy in China. This timely book critically analyses contemporary notions of CSR in China, discussing theory and practice alongside legal responses in this emerging field. Jingchen Zhao uniquely combines the history, traditions and social policies of China with Chinese law, explaining the significance of path dependence in China. He presents an in-depth debate on the difficulties involved in transplanting developed legal principles directly into Chinese society, and takes a detailed look at the CSR provisions in Chinese company law which aimed to put social and environmental concerns onto the corporate agenda. He suggests how these laws could be more effectively and efficiently enforced with reference to UK law, and explores specific issues including: * Chinese Company Law 2006 * the 'Harmonious Society' in China * the 2008 Financial Crisis and its impact on the Chinese economy * recent corporate scandals including the Sanlu Baby Milk scandal, the Wenchuan earthquake and CSR donations, the Beijing Olympic Games and CSR, and the Fujia chemical plant. This book will prove an enlightening read for academics and practitioners in the fields of law, business and management interested in CSR and the law in contemporary China.

Book excerpt: In recent years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting in China has been experiencing a rapid development and the number of social reports issued by Chinese enterprises shows a sharp increasing trend. This book investigates the evolution of such reporting practice in the country and the reasons behind it. In addition, it also examines the reporting quantity and quality of Chinese enterprises by applying the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) as an evaluation tool. In response to policy documents so as to obtain the government’s recognition and to strive for more resources, state-owned enterprises, private enterprises and foreign-invested companies have made substantial efforts in social reporting in terms of quantity and coverage. However, it appears that there is still room for enhancing the quality of disclosure. The book also highlights the central government’s economic, political and social roles in promoting, encouraging and controlling the development of CSR reporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an important concept in the last few decades. Although it originated in the developed countries of the West, the concept has been embraced and adapted by corporations and policy-making agencies in many developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the importance of growth and development as policy objectives in these countries, CSR has had a significant impact on sustainable development. Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility explores the evolution of CSR across the developed and developing world, with a particular focus on China and sustainable development. Through an extensive review of the literature and relevant case studies, the book examines whether CSR can make a contribution to sustainable development, how the patterns of CSR in developed Western economies compare to that in the rapidly growing economy of China, what trade-offs take place between CSR and economic growth as well as the future of CSR and its possible impact on the global sustainable development agenda. This book is a valuable resource for academics and upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of human/social geography, economics, business studies, sustainable development, development studies and environmental studies.

This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: 1,0 (German system 1,0 best), Munich Business School University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: In the course of China's rise to a significant player in the global economy, concerns are voiced regarding individual Chinese companies' irresponsible behaviors among the international communities, resulting in the Chinese government's introduction of strict regulations on social responsibility for companies operating in China. However, due to the decisive government interventions, further potential underlying reasons for Chinese companies' corporate social responsibility (CSR) involvement remain uncertain. The goal of this thesis is to provide insights about CSR and its key drivers and the potential effects of CSR on Chinese companies' performances as well as to offer recommendations for managers of companies in China. The thesis first addressed CSR development in the US and in China by using relevant literature. The results of the literature review showed that legal requirements, government influence, and financial profitability were key drivers for both US and Chinese companies, and CSR had a positive impact on firm performance in both countries. Subsequently, eight semi-structured key informant interviews were conducted. The selected informants were all upper-level managers in their respective companies who were aware of China's CSR strategy and were performing related practices in their firms. The interview results indicated that while legal requirements and government involvement were still the driving forces behind companies' CSR implementation in China, financial profitability is an additional predominant factor for companies' decision-makers. Furthermore, both theoretical and empirical insights displayed a positive relationship between CSR and corporate social and economic performance, indicating that CSR practices benefit both companies and society.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Region: Far East, grade: 1,0, Berlin School of Economics (IMB Institute of Management Berlin), course: Cultural and Political History of China and Europe, language: English, abstract: This paper will examine changes in the China’s social order and structure beginning with the reform period induced by Deng Xiaoping focusing on the DWS. Subsequently CSR in China is assessed. Followed by a comparison of benefits the DWS provided and CSR can provide, it is concluded if, or up to what extent, CSR can compensate social benefits the former DWS supplied to its beneficiaries. There is no other country which embodies the achievements and drawbacks of globalization as evidently as the Peoples Republic of China. Within the last 30 years, China became the fastest growing national economy of the world weekly attracting more than one billion USD. Even though its "march" has just begun, the PRC nowadays already has grown to the world’s third biggest national economy bringing great prosperity to the few and vast hardships for the many. China’s economic ascension did not only create a thin middle- and thinner upper class with unprecedented purchasing power, but also triggered far-flung political and social transformation processes. The magnitude of future social challenges, originating from a transformation of the economic order from a planned economy to a "socialist economy with Chinese characteristics", yet remains unpredictable and imponderable.

Book excerpt: Companies know how to meet the demands of shareholder value: years of managerial excellence testify to this achievement. Many also know how to create stakeholder value – through traditional approaches such as CSR and philanthropy which predictably lead to trade-offs and added costs. What remains elusive is discovering is how to meet both shareholder and stakeholder requirements in the core business – without mediocrity and without compromise – creating value for the company that cannot be disentangled from the value it creates for society and the environment. What if sustainability was embedded into the DNA of your organization? How can you incorporate environmental, health and social value into its very core? Many companies, despite their best intentions, "bolt on" sustainability as an afterthought to their core strategies. They trumpet green initiatives and social philanthropy which lie at the margins of the business, with symbolic wins that inadvertently highlight the unsustainability of the rest of their activities. Today's ecological and social pressures require a different business response – one that existing strategy frameworks fail adequately to address. In Embedded Sustainability, authors Chris Laszlo and Nadya Zhexembayeva explain and predict how companies can better leverage global challenges for enduring profit and sustained growth. They introduce the marquis concept of embedded sustainability: the incorporation of environmental, health, and social value into the heartbeat of the product life-cycle with no trade-off in price or quality – no social or green premium. This book helps readers to comprehend and implement the notion of embedded sustainability. At its best, embedded sustainability is invisible, similar to quality. In addition to delivering socially and environmentally conscious products for consumers, it is capable of considerably motivating employees. Most of all, it enables smart companies to create even more value for both their shareholders and stakeholders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study attempts to provide a comprehensive CSR literature review, analyze corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues from the strategic decision-making (SDM) perspective, and investigate the process of managers’ CSR- related SDM in China. In particular, it utilizes content analysis to examine selected CSR articles from published studies, in order to evaluate the trends in CSR theory development as well as to identify the variables, constructs, and relationships within CSR theory. The review indicates that CSR should be involved in organizational strategies. Therefore, this study reviews the relevant theoretical and empirical literature in the SDM area. Firstly, it summarizes the broader context of strategic decisions and points out factors in the external environment and organizational characteristics that influence the SDM process of managers. Secondly, it articulates the influences of individual characteristics on the SDM. Thirdly, it examines the process of SDM using the rational and bounded rationality theory of decision making. Finally, on the basis of the SDM model, the author generates a research model which proposes the links between vital and influential factors from an integrated perspective. This book also provides a detailed description of how to choose a proper method for the CSR-related SDM research, the process of survey design, sampling methods, and survey administration. In particular, the author utilized a policy-capturing method to develop a series of scenarios concerning CSR activities and an explanation of this method is provided. It reports research findings of this study and provides an extensive and thorough discussion and compares it with previous empirical studies. The conclusion summarizes the research findings and their theoretical and practical implications.
