Book Synopsis Theoretical Issues in Contrastive Linguistics by : Jacek Fisiak
Download or read book Theoretical Issues in Contrastive Linguistics written by Jacek Fisiak and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrastive Linguistics, roughly defined as a subdiscipline of linguistics which is concerned with the comparison of two or more (subsystems of) languages, has long been associated primarily with language teaching. Apart from this applied aspect, however, it also has a strong theoretical purpose, contributing to our understanding of language typology and language universals. Issues in theoretical CL, which also feature in this volume, are the choice of model, the notions of equivalence and contrast, and directionality of descriptions. Languages used for illustration in this volume include English, German, Danish, and Polish.
Book Synopsis The Syntax of Topic, Focus, and Contrast by : Ad Neeleman
Download or read book The Syntax of Topic, Focus, and Contrast written by Ad Neeleman and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses how core notions of information structure (topic, focus and contrast) are expressed in syntax. The authors propose that the syntactic effects of information structure come about as a result of mapping rules that are flexible enough to allow topics and foci to be expressed in a variety of positions, but strict enough to capture certain cross-linguistic generalisations about their distribution. In particular, the papers argue that only contrastive topics and contrastive foci undergo movement and that this is because such movement has the function of marking the scope of contrast. Several predications are derived from this proposal: such as that a focus cannot move across a topic – whether the latter is in situ or not. Syntactic and semantic evidence in support of this proposal is presented from a wide range of languages (including Dutch, English, Japanese, Korean and Russian) and theoretical consequences explored. The first chapter not only outlines its theoretical aims, but also provides an introduction to information structure. As a consequence, the book is accessible to advanced students as well as professional linguists.
Book Synopsis A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian by : Gertjan Postma
Download or read book A Contrastive Grammar of Brazilian Pomeranian written by Gertjan Postma and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pomeranian is the West Germanic language spoken by European emigrants who went from Farther Pomerania (present-day Poland) to Brazil in the period 1857–1887. This language is no longer spoken in cohesive societies in Europe, but the language has survived and is in remarkably good shape on this language island in the tropical state of Espirito Santo. This monograph offers the first synchronic grammar of this language. After a historical introduction, the book offers a systematic description of its phonology, morphology and syntax. The language is contrasted with its European sisters, more particularly High German, Dutch, and Frisian. It highlights various phenomena that will presumably contribute to the ongoing theoretical debate on the Germanic verbal system. It provides new data on cluster V2, do-support, and the two infinitives. As to the infinitival syntax, the language shows remarkable parallels to the system of Frisian. As to the rich Pomeranian system of subtractive morphology, the phonological account that is offered, will be important for the ongoing discussion of the abstractness of phonological representations. Finally, Pomeranian is a welcome addition to the set of languages on which our etymological understanding of West Germanic is based.
Book Synopsis Contrastive Studies in Construction Grammar by : Hans Christian Boas
Download or read book Contrastive Studies in Construction Grammar written by Hans Christian Boas and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume provide a contrastive application of Construction Grammar. By referencing a well-described constructional phenomenon in English, each paper provides a solid foundation for describing and analyzing its constructional counterpart in another language. This approach shows that the semantic description (including discourse-pragmatic and functioanl factors) of an English construction can be regarded as a first step towards a "tertium comparationis" that can be employed for comparing and contrasting the formal properties of constructional counterparts in other languages. Thus, the meaning pole of constructions should be regarded as the primary basis for comparisons of constructions across languages - the form pole is only secondary. This volume shows that constructions are viable descriptive and analytical tools for cross-linguistic comparisons that make it possible to capture both language-specific (idiosyncratic) properties as well as cross-linguistic generalizations.

Book Synopsis Ellipsis and Focus in Generative Grammar by : Susanne Winkler
Download or read book Ellipsis and Focus in Generative Grammar written by Susanne Winkler and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-22 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering linguistic research on empty categories over more than three decades, this monograph presents the result of an in-depth syntactic and focus-theoretical investigation of ellipsis in generative grammar. The phenomenon of ellipsis most generally refers to the omission of linguistic material, structure and sound. The central aim of this book is to explain on the basis of linguistic theorizing of how it is possible that we understand more than we actually hear. The answer developed throughout this book is that ellipsis is an interface phenomenon which can only be explained on the basis of the complex interaction between syntax, semantics and information structure. Scholars of grammar and cognitive scientists will profit from reading this book.
Book Synopsis Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Syntax by : Ruixi Ressy Ai
Download or read book Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Syntax written by Ruixi Ressy Ai and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a contrastive analysis of Chinese and English syntax based on generative grammar. It covers major syntactic domains, including but not limited to noun phrases, verb phrases, the inflectional domain, the discourse-related domain and ellipsis. Based on the empirical data drawn from both Chinese and English, and recast in modern linguistic terminology, the book introduces various rules and theoretical modules from the generative framework to analyze the similarities and differences between Chinese and English syntax. The chapters are arranged such that the book moves from the easiest syntactic topics gradually towards the more complex and advanced ones. Each chapter includes a short summary of major points and references for further reading. Readers are not required to have background knowledge in syntax. The book can serve as a textbook or a reference book for scholars of Chinese studies, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL), Chinese linguistics, comparative linguistics and theoretical linguistics.

Book Synopsis Contrastive Linguistics by : Ping Ke
Download or read book Contrastive Linguistics written by Ping Ke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as an introduction to contrastive linguistics - the synchronic study of two or more languages, with the aim of discovering their differences and similarities, especially the former, and applying these discoveries to related areas of language study and practice. It discusses the principles and methods, and contrasts English, Chinese, German, and other languages at phonological, lexical, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic levels, focusing more on the useful insights contrastive analysis provides into real-world problems in fields such as applied linguistics, translation and translation studies, English or Chinese as a foreign language, and communication than on the discipline itself.

Book Synopsis Crossroads between Contrastive Linguistics, Translation Studies and Machine Translation by : Oliver Czulo
Download or read book Crossroads between Contrastive Linguistics, Translation Studies and Machine Translation written by Oliver Czulo and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrastive Linguistics (CL), Translation Studies (TS) and Machine Translation (MT) have common grounds: They all work at the crossroad where two or more languages meet. Despite their inherent relatedness, methodological exchange between the three disciplines is rare. This special issue touches upon areas where the three fields converge. It results directly from a workshop at the 2011 German Association for Language Technology and Computational Linguistics (GSCL) conference in Hamburg where researchers from the three fields presented and discussed their interdisciplinary work. While the studies contained in this volume draw from a wide variety of objectives and methods, and various areas of overlaps between CL, TS and MT are addressed, the volume is by no means exhaustive with regard to this topic. Further cross-fertilisation is not only desirable, but almost mandatory in order to tackle future tasks and endeavours.}
Book Synopsis Contrastive Studies in Morphology and Syntax by : Michalis Georgiafentis
Download or read book Contrastive Studies in Morphology and Syntax written by Michalis Georgiafentis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using different theoretical approaches and frameworks, this book addresses a broad range of themes in contrastive linguistics, including inflection, derivation and compounding, tense, wh-questions, post-verbal subjects, focus and clitics, among others. Comparing English, German, Greek, Romance, Slavic and South Pacific languages, the book highlights the significance of the contrastive perspective for language-specific description and general interface issues, casting light on contrasts between languages at the levels of morphology and syntax. In this respect, it makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of language typology and language universals.
Book Synopsis Focus in Generative Grammar by : Michael Shaun Rochemont
Download or read book Focus in Generative Grammar written by Michael Shaun Rochemont and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this book is the notion of focus and its linguistic characterization. The main thesis is that focus has a uniform grammatical identification only as a syntactic element with in English at least a certain systematic phonological interpretation and presumably universally a range of semantic interpretations. In broad respects, the framework within this investigation is conducted is that of Chomsky & Lasnik (1977) and the subsequent Government and Binding framework. After considering defining the location of prominence in a focused phrase in terms of constituent structure, the author argues that an argument structure approach to the focus phrase/prominence relation is more promising. This is then exemplified in analyses of cleft focus and constructional focus.
