Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the role of digital media in shaping the geopolitics and materiality of environments in China over the first two decades of the twenty-first century. I look at digital discourses ("smartness," "connectivity," "data transparency"), media practices (film/video, satellite images, data capture), and infrastructures (surveillance, telecommunication) and argue that environments, such as land, sea, and air, are increasingly transformed into political territories, and engineered as part of the new technologies of social governance in the digital era. More specifically, this dissertation moves from urban smart infrastructures in Southern China (chapter one), to contested mediations of the disputed South China Sea (chapter two), and finally, to the circulation of air pollution data and imaginaries across the global South (chapter three). With ethnographic research in addition to visual and discursive analysis, my work employs a multi-scalar approach-sub-national, regional, global-to explore both the institutional and popular actors that shape these eco-digital formations. Focusing on the South as both a geographical and political concept, this orientation challenges the Northern-centered vocabularies and framing to global film and media studies. Meanwhile, China Southern reinstates the transnational momentum of the Southern question (Casarino 2010), especially situated at the juncture between neoliberal experiments since the 1990s and the rise of the "Chinese Dream" in the 2000s as a cultural discourse. In doing so, this research contributes to the broader discussion on global governance, and conceptualizes the often obscured theoretical and material entanglement of media and environments in Asia.

Writing in the Devil’s Tongue challenges this anachronistic approach by examining the history of English composition instruction in an East Asian country. Author Xiaoye You offers scholars a chance to observe how a nation changed from monolingual writing practices to bilingual writing instruction in a school setting. You makes extensive use of archival sources to help trace bilingual writing instruction in China back to 1862, when English was first taught in government schools. Treating the Chinese pursuit of modernity as the overarching theme, he explores how the entry of Anglo-American rhetoric and composition challenged and altered the traditional monolithic practice of teaching Chinese writing in the Confucian spirit. The author focuses on four aspects of this history: the Chinese negotiation with Anglo-American rhetoric, their search for innovative approaches to instruction, students’ situated use of English writing, and local scholarship in English composition. Chapter one claims that works written by Westerners who traveled to and wrote about China and the Chinese are not often included in studies concerned with the rhetoric of othering or Western representations of non-Western others. Chapter 2 of provides a literature review of research related to the Macartney embassy, examining those texts primarily in terms of the methodology that the authors use to interpret embassy artifacts. Chapter 3 considers how Pratt's reading strategies can be applied to both the embassy in general and to the dynamics of the kowtow incident in particular. The historical circumstances that distinguished the Macartney embassy to China makes comparison with other contact zone encounters problematic; therefore, Chapter 3 also identifies seven important features of a contact zone encounter that exist above and beyond specific historical circumstances. In Chapter 4, I use Pratt's ways of reading to identify "moments" in the travel narratives where genre and ideology intersect. Chapter 5, the (slightly decentered) centerpiece of the dissertation, examines a meeting-of-the-heads-of-state scene as depicted in an English satirical engraving from 1792. The print is an extraordinary depiction of a contact zone encounter, yet its proximity from the actual event demonstrates the potential of the contact zone as an analytical tool for interrogating a range of cross-cultural representations. The last chapter of the dissertation argues that the embassy and the kowtow incident were, in some ways, the realizations of preconceived visual and literary metaphors. The features of a contact zone encounter identified in Chapter 3 should help researchers to access and interpret systematically and comprehensively those visual and literary metaphors associated with a contact zone.
