Book Synopsis The Ante-Nicene Fathers by : Allan Menzies
Download or read book The Ante-Nicene Fathers written by Allan Menzies and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume IX of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, the series editors return to a collection that they had thought complete. Archaeological discoveries presented them with new early Christian texts that needed publication. This volume is divided into two parts: newly discovered fragments and writings from a variety of sources, and additional commentaries by Origen. These new fragments include: . the Gospel of Peter and the Apocalypse of Peter. the Diatessaron of Tatian and the Vision of Paul. the Apocalypse of the Virgin and the Apocalypse of Sedrach. The Testament of Abraham and the Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena. the Narrative of Zosimus and the Epistles of Clement. the Apology of Aristides the Philosopher. the Passion of the Scillitan Martyrs. epistle to Gregory and Origen's commentary

Book Synopsis The Lives of Muhammad by : Kecia Ali
Download or read book The Lives of Muhammad written by Kecia Ali and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent outbursts sparked by a viral video and controversial cartoons powerfully illustrate the passions and sensitivities that continue to surround the depiction of the seventh-century founder of Islam. The Lives of Muhammad delves into the many ways the Prophet’s life story has been told from the earliest days of Islam to the present, by both Muslims and non-Muslims. Emphasizing the major transformations since the nineteenth century, Kecia Ali shows that far from being mutually opposed, these various perspectives have become increasingly interdependent. Since the nineteenth century, two separate streams of writing, one hagiographic and the other polemical, have merged into a single, contentious story about the life of Muhammad. Protestant missionaries, European Orientalists, Indian and Egyptian modernists, and American voices across the spectrum, including preachers, scholars, Islamophobes, journalists, academics, and new-age gurus, debated Muhammad’s character and the facts of his life. In the process, texts written symbolically came to be read literally. Muhammad’s accomplishments as a religious and political leader, his military encounters with Meccans and Medinan Jews, and—a subject of perennial interest—his relationships with women, including his young wife Aisha, are among the key subjects writers engaged, repurposing early materials for new circumstances. Many of the ideas about Muhammad that Muslims embrace today—Muhammad the social reformer, Muhammad the consummate leader, Muhammad the ideal husband—arose in tandem and in tension with Western depictions. These were in turn shaped by new ideas about religion, sexuality, and human accomplishments.

Book Synopsis Rapture or Tribulation by : Richard W. Tow
Download or read book Rapture or Tribulation written by Richard W. Tow and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We find ourselves in an hour that requires great spiritual preparation for the unique dynamics that are still ahead for the church, Israel, and the world as it is and will be. I am thankful for any and every resource that gives courage to godly men and women to see where the world is going and embrace the unique role that the church serves this generation. Therefore, I am thankful for Richard Tow and his timely service to the body of Christ in laboring to produce this important book. A generation of believers, young and old, are searching for biblical truth with depth on the subject of the return of Jesus because of the recent escalation of trouble and darkness. I highly recommend that Richard’s book be a priority for any searching for a clearer sense of the “why behind the what” of the timing of the Tribulation that precedes the Lord’s return. David Sliker President, International House of Prayer University My friend and fellow minister for many years, Richard Tow has written a must-read book if you are interested in eschatology. His comprehensive, scholarly, non-dogmatic research of Scripture, and the positions held on the Tribulation and the Rapture of the church, leave it up to the individual reader to decide for him or herself which view to espouse. Rapture or Tribulation is the kindest, most thorough book I have read on the topic. Dr. Loren Houltberg Professor, Author, and Regional Pastor for the Foursquare Church
