Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2006 Christianity Today Book Award! Honored as one of the "Fifteen Outstanding Books of 2005 for Mission Studies" by International Bulletin of Missionary Research From Cairo to Calcutta, from Cochabamba to Columbus, Christians are engaged in a conversation about how to speak and live the gospel in today's traditional, modern and emergent cultures. The technical term for their efforts is contextualization. Missionary theorists have pondered and written on it at length. More and more, those who do theology in the West are also trying to discover new ways of communicating and embodying the gospel for an emerging postmodern culture. But few have considered in depth how the early church contextualized the gospel. And yet the New Testament provides numerous examples. As both a crosscultural missionary and a New Testament scholar, Dean Flemming is well equipped to examine how the early church contextualized the gospel and to draw out lessons for today. By carefully sifting the New Testament evidence, Flemming uncovers the patterns and parameters of a Paul or Mark or John as they spoke the Word on target, and he brings these to bear on our contemporary missiological task. Rich in insights and conversant with frontline thinking, this is a book that will revitalize the conversation and refresh our speaking and living the gospel in today's cultures, whether in traditional, modern or emergent contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past a person had to read all four New Testament Gospels and mentally remember and combine all they read earlier about a given event in the life of the Savior to completely comprehend all the facts pertaining to that event. I have combined all the facts of all the events and at the same time organized them into a single gospel. Now the reader can read Jesus Christ’s biography as recorded in the King James Version of the Bible by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in chronological sequence. I love my Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, who broke the bonds of death and became the first fruits of the resurrection. I want my children and grand children, my friends and neighbors, and everyone in the entire world to know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the most important thing in my entire life. I trust that when you read this book it will become the most important thing in your life. I acknowledge that it is only through God’s divine guidance that I have been able to combine these four sacred records into a single gospel. The words of the text are not mine. They are the actual words recorded in the New Testament by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. A few verses from the book of Acts are included in this book in order to provide additional understanding in what transpired just before and after Jesus’ ascension into heaven. May I suggest that you read this book from cover to cover with a desire to glean from its pages those sacred truths which were taught by Jesus and then evaluate its ability to increase your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and increase a desire within you to be a better person? Be it known unto all mankind that this compilation has been made in an attempt to aid man in his quest for eternal life. It is a witness to the whole world that Jesus of Nazareth was and is, indeed, the Savior of the world. The passages of scripture from which each verse was taken are listed as references. This permits the reader to investigate and verify for himself the validity of what he reads. Last of all, I give my personal witness that I know that Jesus is the Christ, the only begotten of the Father in the flesh. This witness was given me of God and was verified anew as I edited these sacred records. May God bless the inhabitants of this earth that all may come to a knowledge of God and know for themselves that Jesus is the Christ and then live in accordance with His teachings.

Book excerpt: Christianity is more than just a set of spiritual beliefs, it is actually a complete worldview (i.e. a framework of ideas and beliefs, through which to view and comprehend the world), given to mankind through Divine revelation. Within this all-encompassing worldview there are certain principles and concepts that form its foundation. These principles and concepts are known as The Essential Christian Doctrines. A lack of knowledge concerning the Essential Doctrines increases the chances of a Christian falling prey to false pseudo-Christian doctrines and worldly influences. Also, it can cause non-Christians to have an inaccurate view of Christianity, hindering them from discovering God's love, and the grace and fulfillment God offers through Christ. This book is a very condensed version of the New Testament, which uses an innovative approach to present the New Testament, and the Essential Doctrines in a concise, easy to read, and easy to understand manner. While it is not meant to be a replacement for the full New Testament, with its various features it can however be used to provide to readers a good overview of the New Testament, in a personal or group study setting. But most importantly, it provides for readers a time efficient way to obtain a good and accurate understanding of the Christian worldview and thus of true Christianity.

This book was released on 2008-10-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words, phrases, and stories of the New Testament permeate the English language. Indeed, this relatively small group of twenty-seven works, written during the height of the Roman Empire, not only helped create and sustain a vast world religion, but also have been integral to the larger cultural dynamics of the West, above and beyond particular religious expressions. Looking at the New Testament through the lens of literary study, Kyle Keefer offers an engrossing exploration of this revered religious text as a work of literature, but also keeps in focus its theological ramifications. Unique among books that examine the Bible as literature, this brilliantly compact introduction offers an intriguing double-edged look at this universal text--a religiously informed literary analysis. The book first explores the major sections of the New Testament--the gospels, Paul's letters, and Revelation--as individual literary documents. Keefer shows how, in such familiar stories as the parable of the Good Samaritan, a literary analysis can uncover an unexpected complexity to what seems a simple, straightforward tale. At the conclusion of the book, Keefer steps back and asks questions about the New Testament as a whole. He reveals that whether read as a single document or as a collection of works, the New Testament presents readers with a wide variety of forms and viewpoints, and a literary exploration helps bring this richness to light. A fascinating investigation of the New Testament as a classic literary work, this Very Short Introduction uses a literary framework--plot, character, narrative arc, genre--to illuminate the language, structure, and the crafting of this venerable text. About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 21st century world of smart phones, social media, and instant access to almost everything, far too many just don't have the time, patience, or focus necessary to sit down and read the entire Bible. Still others want to explore Christianity or strengthen their faith because their understanding is limited and unfulfilling but do not have a resource that can cut to the core of the greatest book ever written. Now there is a solution. The Best of the Bible: New Testament scriptures condensed and sequenced to understand the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The Best of the Bible takes the most significant words and teachings of the New Testament and makes the Bible accessible to everyone in just 139 pages. The goal was to share the Bible in a user friendly format without changing a word, not an easy task. This allows a clear understanding of the life and teachings of Jesus so readers can make their own decision to move towards Christ's mission. For others of faith, this work will only strengthen their hearts. The New International version was used as the primary source for the scriptures, and no words have been altered from the text of any English Bible translation. What has been done is a painstaking removal of passages and verses in the 27 books of the New Testament to give the story a scope, sequence, and size found nowhere else. The least teachable or redundant passages have been removed that share the same stories and historical record. Sequencing also took place in order to give the life and teachings of Jesus a contextual timeline. The Best of the Bible Is the perfect starting point for anyone looking for understanding, inspiration, and hope through Jesus Christ; or for those who want to revisit the Bible to strengthen their faith.

Book excerpt: The Internet age has given rise to a new genre of terminology. One of these is "tl;dr" - short for "too long; didn't read". You'll see it used in Internet comment spaces when someone writes a post which is so lengthy that the recipient simply refuses to spend the time reading and comprehending it. We are too used to 140 character tweets and two-sentence memes. As a youth minister and catechist, I have noticed how this spills into the study of Scripture, or the lack thereof. For many people something like the letter to the Romans is too long and impenetrable to bother with. In effect, people look at Saint Paul (and John and Peter) and say "tl;dr".Now, some people, knowing they are writing something which may be dismissed for its length, will also offer a "tl;dr version" of their post. This means providing a concise summary of the larger whole. That's what I have tried to do here with the New Testament epistles. I wanted to shrink them down to one-fifth size in a way which is faithful to the content of the inspired originals. Whether this is used in place of the actual Scriptures or as a stepping stone up to them is entirely up to you.[tl;dr version: Here's some condensed versions of the New Testament letters. I hope they help.]
