It identifies governments' quest to shift part of the burden of new infrastructure investments to the private sector for the economic development of firms and industry and the improvement of quality of life and, given the constraints on public budgets, to finance growing infrastructure needs. Adequate infrastructure services include power, telecommunications, transport, water supply and sanitation. The paper also emphasizes the private sector involvement in bringing increased efficiency to investment and management and operation.

Book excerpt: Forest concessions have been an important element of forestry and forest management in many countries, including developing countries. However, if sustainable management of tropical forests is to be achieved and deforestation brought under control, the allocation, management, and supervision of forest concessions will need to be strengthened. This study examines the failures of forest concessions over the last 20 years, and highlights the potential gains resulting from concentrating on improving procedures, introducing performance incentives, and monitoring key performance elements.

Book excerpt: During the 1990s, infrastructure concessions were hailed as the solution to Latin America's endemic infrastructure deficit, by combining private sector efficiency with rent dissipation brought about by competition. This publication examines the design and implementation of over 1,000 examples of concession contracts, in order to identify the problems that have occurred in the process. It goes on to highlight lessons to be learned for the future, in order to realise the potential benefits of infrastructure reform and to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

Book Synopsis Inside the Politics of Self-Determination by : Kathleen Gallagher Cunningham
Download or read book Inside the Politics of Self-Determination written by Kathleen Gallagher Cunningham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently over 100 stateless nations pressing for greater self-determination around the globe. The vast majority of these groups will never achieve independence. Many groups will receive some accommodation over self-determination, many will engage in civil war over self-determination, and in many cases, internecine violence will plague these groups. This book examines the dynamic internal politics of states and self-determination groups. The internal structure and political dynamics of states and self-determination groups significantly affect information and credibility problems faced by these actors, as well as the incentives and opportunities for states to pursue partial accommodation of these groups. Using new data on the internal structure of all self-determination groups and their states and on all accommodation in self-determination disputes, this book shows that states with some, but not too many, internal divisions are best able to accommodate self-determination groups and avoid civil war. When groups are more internally divided, they are both much more likely to be accommodated and to get into civil war with the state, and also more likely to have fighting within the group. Detailed comparison of three self-determination disputes in the conflict-torn region of northeast India reveals that internal divisions in states and groups affect when these groups get the accommodation they seek, which groups violently rebel, and whether actors target violence against their own co-ethnics. The argument and evidence in this book reveal the dynamic effect that internal divisions within SD groups and states have on their ability to bargain over self-determination. Kathleen Gallagher Cunningham demonstrates that understanding the relations between states and SD groups requires looking at the politics inside these actors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict is something inevitable. It is an integral part of our lives. Normally we work in groups and while working, we relate with our superiors, peers and juniors. While relating, more often than not, conflicting situations arise which take toll on our precious time and energy. Therefore, understanding and management of conflict become very important. This book deals with different conceptual aspects of conflict and its effective management. The most popular and effective style of resolving conflict is through dialogue, which is popularly known as negotiation. Through negotiation people deal with differences, which they do, consciously or unconsciously, throughout their lives. The part of the book dealing with negotiation takes care of the details about different aspects of negotiation – strategies, preparation, processes and multicultural and ethical dimensions related to it. The book contains live cases, which will provide useful insight on the theoretical and conceptual aspects to the students. The book will go a long way in meeting with the requirements of the management students by providing consolidated material on the subject.

Book Synopsis The First Kuwait Oil Agreement by : A.H.T. Chisholm
Download or read book The First Kuwait Oil Agreement written by A.H.T. Chisholm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1975. The first Kuwait oil concession agreement, granted on 23rd December 1934 by the late Shaikh Ahmad al Jaber al Subah to the Kuwait Oil Company Ltd., has been of fundamental importance in the history of the State of Kuwait; whose great increase in prosperity and international influence during the last twenty-eight years has directly resulted from its oil production since 1946 under the Agreement and its 1951 successor. Hitherto no full or authoritative account of the very long and complex commercial and political negotiations preceding the Agreement has been compiled; and consequently all descriptions of them so far published (except those merely quoting the Agreement's terms and naming the parties concerned) have contained substantial omissions or errors of fact involving a wrong impression of what actually occurred. This text is a record of the negotiations between 1911 and 1934.
