Book Synopsis Remote Sensing Technology Applications in Forestry and REDD+ by : Kim Calders
Download or read book Remote Sensing Technology Applications in Forestry and REDD+ written by Kim Calders and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in close-range and remote sensing technologies are driving innovations in forest resource assessments and monitoring on varying scales. Data acquired with airborne and spaceborne platforms provide high(er) spatial resolution, more frequent coverage, and more spectral information. Recent developments in ground-based sensors have advanced 3D measurements, low-cost permanent systems, and community-based monitoring of forests. The UNFCCC REDD+ mechanism has advanced the remote sensing community and the development of forest geospatial products that can be used by countries for the international reporting and national forest monitoring. However, an urgent need remains to better understand the options and limitations of remote and close-range sensing techniques in the field of forest degradation and forest change. Therefore, we invite scientists working on remote sensing technologies, close-range sensing, and field data to contribute to this Special Issue. Topics of interest include: (1) novel remote sensing applications that can meet the needs of forest resource information and REDD+ MRV, (2) case studies of applying remote sensing data for REDD+ MRV, (3) timeseries algorithms and methodologies for forest resource assessment on different spatial scales varying from the tree to the national level, and (4) novel close-range sensing applications that can support sustainable forestry and REDD+ MRV. We particularly welcome submissions on data fusion.
Book Synopsis Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing by : Motoyoshi Ikeda
Download or read book Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing written by Motoyoshi Ikeda and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-09-18 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing describes how remotely sensed data fields can be applied to help solve problems in ocean-related studies. This timely reference, written by and for oceanographers, emphasizes the application of data to particular physical, chemical, and biological processes related to the ocean and the ocean-atmosphere system. The organization of the book reflects this emphasis, with chapters arranged by process rather than by sensor characteristics. Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing contains comprehensive information on the application of such relevant data sets as sea surface temperature and topography, ocean circulation, sea level variability, wind speed and stress, wave height, solar radiation flux at ocean surfaces, and sea-ice characteristics and ice motion. It also discusses the reliability of remotely sensed data and provides information about the applicability of the various data sets to particular process studies. Its completeness and relevance makes Oceanographic Applications of Remote Sensing an important reference for modern studies of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere processes. Its unique coverage of the physics that govern satellite processes and their applications to oceanography ensures that it will remain an important reference as new satellites are introduced.
Book Synopsis 3D Remote Sensing Applications in Forest Ecology by : Hooman Latifi
Download or read book 3D Remote Sensing Applications in Forest Ecology written by Hooman Latifi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Colleagues, The composition, structure and function of forest ecosystems are the key features characterizing their ecological properties, and can thus be crucially shaped and changed by various biotic and abiotic factors on multiple spatial scales. The magnitude and extent of these changes in recent decades calls for enhanced mitigation and adaption measures. Remote sensing data and methods are the main complementary sources of up-to-date synoptic and objective information of forest ecology. Due to the inherent 3D nature of forest ecosystems, the analysis of 3D sources of remote sensing data is considered to be most appropriate for recreating the forest’s compositional, structural and functional dynamics. In this Special Issue of Forests, we published a set of state-of-the-art scientific works including experimental studies, methodological developments and model validations, all dealing with the general topic of 3D remote sensing-assisted applications in forest ecology. We showed applications in forest ecology from a broad collection of method and sensor combinations, including fusion schemes. All in all, the studies and their focuses are as broad as a forest’s ecology or the field of remote sensing and, thus, reflect the very diverse usages and directions toward which future research and practice will be directed.
Book Synopsis Object-Based Image Analysis by : Thomas Blaschke
Download or read book Object-Based Image Analysis written by Thomas Blaschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-09 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of invited interdisciplinary persp- tives on the recent topic of Object-based Image Analysis (OBIA). Its c- st tent is based on select papers from the 1 OBIA International Conference held in Salzburg in July 2006, and is enriched by several invited chapters. All submissions have passed through a blind peer-review process resulting in what we believe is a timely volume of the highest scientific, theoretical and technical standards. The concept of OBIA first gained widespread interest within the GIScience (Geographic Information Science) community circa 2000, with the advent of the first commercial software for what was then termed ‘obje- oriented image analysis’. However, it is widely agreed that OBIA builds on older segmentation, edge-detection and classification concepts that have been used in remote sensing image analysis for several decades. Nevert- less, its emergence has provided a new critical bridge to spatial concepts applied in multiscale landscape analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the synergy between image-objects and their radiometric char- teristics and analyses in Earth Observation data (EO).
Book Synopsis The operational role of remote sensing in forest and landscape management by : Gen Takao
Download or read book The operational role of remote sensing in forest and landscape management written by Gen Takao and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing has contributed to forest and landscape management. The technology, which includes sensors, processing software and analysis, has been extensively studied and applied. Studies that employed remote sensing have improved understanding of the sites studied. At the strategic level of forest planning, or in general planning for forest resource allocation over a wide area, remote sensing can play an important role in estimating and monitoring forest cover. At the tactical level, however, when planning forest management activities in a specific forested landscape, remote sensing has not yet contributed as much as expected: Methods proved successful under research conditions cannot always be applied to operational management. There is a gap between scientific and operational uses. Recognising this gap, forest management practitioners and scientists gathered for a daylong focus group discussion to examine constraints and understand better what practitioners expected remote sensing to do for them. The following recommendations arose from the group discussions.
