Book excerpt: Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation presents the proceedings of the International Topical Conference on Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation held on April 2-4, 1984 in Athens, Georgia. The purpose of the conference was to bring together international experts from a wide variety of backgrounds who are studying phenomena inherently similar to the formation of large clusters by the union of many separate, small elements, to present and exchange ideas on new theories and results of experimental and computer simulations. This book is divided into 57 chapters, each of which represents an oral presentation that is part of a unified whole. The book begins with a presentation on fractal concepts in aggregation and gelation, followed by presentations on topics such as aggregative fractals called ""squigs""; multi-particle fractal aggregation; theory of fractal growth processes; self-similar structures; and interface dynamics. Other chapters cover addition polymerization and related models; the kinetic gelation model; a new model of linear polymers; red cell aggregation kinetics; the Potts Model; aggregation of colloidal silica; the ballistic model of aggregation; stochastic dynamics simulation of particle aggregation; particle-cluster aggregation; kinetic clustering of clusters; computer simulations of domain growth; and perspectives in the kinetics of aggregation and gelation. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of chemistry, theoretical physics, and materials engineering.

Book excerpt: In this work we present a study of the aggregation and sol-gel transition of colloidal suspensions using a wide range of experimental techniques. We investigate in the first part of this work a model system which undergoes a sol-gel transition in the hope to gain further insight into the fundamental process of gelation. Therefore, a colloidal suspension of nano particles (polystyrene spheres) in water is destabilised to induce aggregation of fractal clusters. The clusters will grow until they finally all connect and form a gel. Combining neutron and light scattering, we are able to measure simultaneously and time resolved the static and dynamic properties of the same sample, which allows us to test well-known theories and to compare our data with recent results of other research groups. Our measurements demonstrate a deviation from classical theories in the critical behavior just before the gel is formed, which we interpret as a glassy cluster phase. The second part of this work describes an experimental setup which is based on a multiple scattering suppression scheme and which allows us to measure even relatively turbid samples faster and with higher precision.

Book excerpt: In this work we present a study of the aggregation and sol-gel transition of colloidal suspensions using a wide range of experimental techniques, where some of them were modified or developed especially for this purpose. Covering all relevant time and length scales, we investigate in the first part of this work a model system which undergoes a sol-gel transition in the hope to gain further insight into the fundamental process of gelation. Therefore, a colloidal suspension of nano particles (polystyrene spheres) in water is destabilised to induce aggregation of fractal clusters. The clusters will grow until they finally all connect and form a volume filling network, i.e. a gel. Combining neutron and light scattering, we are able to measure simultaneously and time resolved the static and dynamic properties of the same sample in the length scale of a few Angstroms to several hundred nanometers, which allows us to test well-known theories and to compare our data with recent results of other research groups. Our measurements demonstrate a deviation from classical theories in the critical behavior just before the volume spanning network is formed, which we interpret with the observation of a glassy cluster phase. In order to investigate this effect, a novel technique is used to gain access to very slow dynamic processes, revealing data which seems to proof our hypothesis of a glassy phase in the gelation process. The second part of this work describes an experimental setup which is based on a light scattering technique introduced in the last ten years and which allows us to measure faster and with higher precision. By measuring simultaneously at four different angles instead of only one, a factor of four in acquisition time is gained in comparison to traditional setups. Moreover, dynamic measurements can be analysed angle dependent and therefore improved in precision. As the chosen technique is based on a multiple scattering suppression scheme, even relatively turbid samp.

Book excerpt: An account is made of the experimental, theoretical, and computational developments that led to our current understanding of the colloidal aggregation problem when a gravitational field is present. Starting with unaggregated colloids, a review is made of the advances that led to the founding of the barometric equation for the distribution of colloidal particles in a suspension, noticing that for large bodies, like large colloidal aggregates, their final fate in equilibrium is to be at the bottom of the container. Then, we briefly review the aggregation of colloids in the absence of gravity that has been amply studied by both experiments and simulations. For this purpose, the paradigmatic case of the DLVO interaction is taken as an example. Next, a brief revision is made of the seminal experimental work of C. Allain and collaborators on the colloidal aggregation problem when an external gravitational field is present, centering our study in the nongelling situations, that is, for dilute colloidal suspensions, when only sedimentation and deposition of single clusters occur. Afterward, the development of different computer simulations that treat this case of single cluster sedimentation and deposition is reviewed, and note how the different improvements of the algorithms lead to better correspondences with the experimental systems. We finally discuss further possible improvements of the algorithms and end with proposals for future work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the properties of particles in colloidal suspensions. It has a focus on particle aggregates and the dependency of their physical behaviour on morphological parameters. For this purpose, relevant theories and methodological tools are reviewed and applied to selected examples. The book is divided into four main chapters. The first of them introduces important measurement techniques for the determination of particle size and interfacial properties in colloidal suspensions. A further chapter is devoted to the physico-chemical properties of colloidal particles—highlighting the interfacial phenomena and the corresponding interactions between particles. The book’s central chapter examines the structure-property relations of colloidal aggregates. This comprises concepts to quantify size and structure of aggregates, models and numerical tools for calculating the (light) scattering and hydrodynamic properties of aggregates, and a discussion on van-der-Waals and double layer interactions between aggregates. It is illustrated how such knowledge may significantly enhance the characterisation of colloidal suspensions. The final part of the book refers to the information, ideas and concepts already presented in order to address technical aspects of the preparation of colloidal suspensions—in particular the performance of relevant dispersion techniques and the stability of colloidal suspensions.

Book excerpt: This work is the result of a wide range of computer simulation research into the aggregation behavior of dispersed colloidal and aerosol particles in a number of different environments from the continuum to the free-molecular. The goal of this research has been to provide a bridge between experimental and theoretical researchers in this field by simulating the aggregation process within a known model. To this end, a variety of interparticle interactions has been studied in the course of this research, focusing on the effect of these interactions on the aggregation mechanism and resulting aggregate structures. Both Monte Carlo and Brownian Dynamics codes have been used to achieve this goal. The morphologies of clusters that result from aggregation events in these systems have been thoroughly analyzed with a range of diverse techniques, and excellent agreement has been found with other researchers in this field. Morphologies of these clusters include fractal, gel, and crystalline forms, sometimes within the same structure at different length scales. This research has contributed to the fundamental understanding of aggregation rates and size distributions in many physical system, having allowed for the development of improved models of the aggregation and gelation process. Systems studied include DLCA and BLCA in two and three dimension, free-molecular diffusional (Epstein) system, selective aggregation in binary colloids, ssDNA mediated aggregation in colloidal systems, and several others.

Book excerpt: Colloids are ubiquitous in the food, medical, cosmetics, polymers, water purification, and pharmaceutical industries. The thermal, mechanical, and storage properties of colloids are highly dependent on their interface morphology and their rheological behavior. Numerical methods provide a convenient and reliable tool for the study of colloids. Accelerated Lattice Boltzmann Model for Colloidal Suspensions introduce the main building-blocks for an improved lattice Boltzmann–based numerical tool designed for the study of colloidal rheology and interface morphology. This book also covers the migrating multi-block used to simulate single component, multi-component, multiphase, and single component multiphase flows and their validation by experimental, numerical, and analytical solutions. Among other topics discussed are the hybrid lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for surfactant-covered droplets; biological suspensions such as blood; used in conjunction with the suppression of coalescence for investigating the rheology of colloids and microvasculature blood flow. The presented LBM model provides a flexible numerical platform consisting of various modules that could be used separately or in combination for the study of a variety of colloids and biological flow deformation problems.
