The three volumes in this set are conceived as ""handbooks"" for individual teachers to help them implement computer-mediated communication (CMC) in their classrooms. The authors avoid as far as possible discussing hardware or software specifics, concentrating instead on content, pedagogy, instructional design and the mechanics of using CMC. Book excerpt: One of the most recent technological systems to be adopted for use in distance education is computer-mediated communication (CMC), which typically includes computer conferencing, electronic mail, and electronic bulletin boards. The purpose of this review is to provide teachers, researchers and administrators with a practical summary of current knowledge about design, teaching, and institutional issues in the use of CMC for distance education, and to consolidate the major questions and issues in order to provide a relatively comprehensive overview of the field at this point in time. The review, which focuses on empirical studies using CMC in distance education, is divided into four parts: (1) Designing a Course To Maximize the Potential of CMC; (2) Teaching Considerations; (3) Institutional Issues (including computer access and marketing, policy, and cost); and (4) two charts illustrating the educational and communication uses of CMC which emphasize the extent to which CMC has become an international phenomenon. (Contains 181 references.) (ALF)

Book excerpt: This monograph presents a collection of separate papers that focuses on pioneering projects in computer-mediated communication (CMC) and distance education. The first section of the monograph contains two papers describing the author's experiences with CMC projects that formed the foundation for his further CMC work: "NKI Electronic College," a distance education program using computer conferencing at NKI College in Oslo (Norway); and "Teaching Across the Atlantic," a computer-conference-based course conducted by experts form both sides of the Atlantic. In the second section, two papers--"Innovative Computer-Conferencing Courses" and "Computer-Mediated Communication and Distance Education around the World, An Annotated Bibliography"--provide 16 examples of the CMC projects in 12 countries the author has encountered through literature reviews and personal communications. Three articles that compile experiences, conclusions, and predictions for the future based on the author's perceptions and theories are presented in the final section: "GO MEEC," which describes a goal-oriented method for establishment of an electronic college; "The Electronic University," which predicts the development of future electronic universities; and "The Hexagon of Cooperative Freedom," which proposes a distance education theory attuned to CMC. Most of the papers include references; a total of 79 references are contained overall. (KRN)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign began an Internet-based teaching program, allowing students across the United States - and the world - to earn a Master's degree from a distance. The program, known as LEEP (Library Education Experimental Project), has been an outstanding success, and as an early innovation in Internet use, provides important lessons on how to flourish in an online environment. Learning, Culture and Community in Online Education brings together significant new research on online education, using the LEEP program as a model to reveal a wealth of information about innovative online practices. Contributions by administrators, philosophers, faculty, librarians, technical staff, and researchers in the traditions of education, computer science, folklore, information science, and sociology, reveal the many perspectives to be taken into account when creating and maintaining distance learning programs. More than an analysis of the LEEP program, this book is an essential introduction to the variety of social and educational phenomena that occur within the socio-technical environments that support online learners.
