Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition in the High School, the First and Second Years This bulletin confesses to an extremely restricted and definite aim. It is designed to be of some service, however slight, to those teachers in the State of Wisconsin, who through lack of experience, or the pressure of too numerous duties, have felt the need of some specific suggestions as to the matter and the method to be used in conducting the work in English composition, during the first and second high school years. What is said here applies particularly to the work in the smaller high schools, since it is in such schools that the instructors in English are laboring under the greatest difficulties. The suggestions given have been worked out in several classes, under the actual conditions that exist in the average high school; they are, therefore, the product, not of theorizing, but of an effort to make of first and second-year composition something both agreeable and profitable. If it appears that undue emphasis has been given to the idea of rendering the course agreeable, this condition has its origin in a firm belief that it is only by consulting the everyday interests of the pupils, and creating in the class the notion that self-expression is a natural and pleasant thing, that the best results can be obtained. While stress may, on occasion, be very properly laid on the ultimate advantages of composition for the practical purposes of life, it cannot be expected that these remote considerations will appeal to the average freshman or sophomore; the surer way of progress is to win the student's sympathy and interest in the work for its own sake. This statement of Professor George Herbert Palmer's, intended to assert the value of any power of effective speech, might well serve as a motto for this chapter. The impor tance of this power to explain, to make Clear to another exactly what is in one's mind, is universally felt. You all know how worth while it is, both in school and out of school. Such ability is not ordinarily a gift, but a reward. It belongs, at least in some degree, to everyone who will earn it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Manual of Composition: Designed for Use in the Highest Grammar Grade and the Lower High School Grades Two years ago the writer published a small volume called A First Book in Writing Eng lish. He did so on the hypothesis that all the rhetorical theory necessary for college en trance may best be given in simple form to students in the first two years of the high school, in order that it may later be assimilated by practice. After watching the book in use by pupils of very different ages, he believes the hypothesis to be essentially correct. The chief principles of rhetoric can be grasped very early, but only long practice can transform them into a workman's instincts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric It is believed that well-prepared students of the first and second years of the high-school can use this book, although certain schools which have not been able to devote much time to the study of English might find it profitable in the third and fourth years. In either case it is hoped that this book may be a directing and suggestive force, especially if it be supplemented by frank class-criticism upon the themes. Too much can not be said of the value of such criticism from teachers and students. It is often difficult to draw out, but once it is secured, it will be found to have both a stimulating and a restraining influence on the written work of the students, and will make the study of English a pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentence and Theme: Composition for the First Year of High School English is so new a subject, the teaching of composition has been done with such a variety of new and old theories, that we teachers are perplexed by the multifariousness of counsel. There is a wide diversity of judgment about each element of composition-teaching. As to spelling, we may be urged to teach 5,000 words in the grades or only 500 in high school or to attend mostly to 100 "demons"; we may be told that troubles are largely oral or that oral difficulties are a small minority; we may be advised to teach spelling every day or not to worry much about spelling in themes. Grammar is insisted on in one quarter as vitally necessary; in another it is taboo. Punctuation is everywhere called for, but is said by many authorities to be a. matter of instinct, hardly reducible to definite rules for teaching pupils definite knowledge. Paragraphs are like geometrical propositions to one text-maker, and are "largely a feeling for appearance" to some who actually write books. School themes should be organized - many textbooks imply - with an introduction and a conclusion; "they should begin and end without those appurtenances" is the judgment of many journalists and authors. Even more perplexing than contrary opinions about each of these subjects is the lack of guidance in correlating them. How much of the virtue of a theme inheres in good spelling? Is a grammatical error worse than a misspelling or less heinous than a bit of poor diction? What direct relation has grammar to composition as a whole? to punctuation in particular? Is grammar an isolated subject, or is it a vital component in the second teaching of sentence-making? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Composition The present text-book is intended as a guide to pupils in the first two years' work in English in the high school. The creed of its authors may be summed up in a few words: (1) A text-book in com position should be short, simple, clear; (2) it should set forth the principles of writing mainly in non technical language, i. E., in such language as the pupils Will recognize as being in their own sphere of interests and ideas; (3) it should lay stress upon the matter to be dealt With before the form, and upon the results to be obtained rather than the method; (4) it should give abundant suggestions as to material suitable for treatment by the pupils. In the view of the authors, the book contains material enough for the instruction in composition over a period of two years, Where such instruction is given once or twice a week. For no exercise in writ ing, of any type, is likely to attain its end if given but once. The pupil needs to try the work, to have his efforts judged by the teacher, and then to try again With the help derived from the teacher's criticisms. Even if his first attempt should be fairly successful, he should do more work of the same kind. For writ ing is an art, and, like all arts, requires frequent and thoughtful practice. With this procedure in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Composition, for the Use of Schools: On an Entirely New Plan IT is believed, that nothing like this book, either in design or arrangement, has ever been issued from the press. All other elementary works in this department, proceed upon a plan so different from the one herein proposed, that the author cannot be said to have trespassed upon ground already occupied. While, in other branches of education, the idea of gradual progress has been recognized and carried out, in this, which more than any demands the most careful application of the idea, it seems to have been entirely overlooked. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for English Teachers: For Use in the Texas High Schools The plan outlined in the following pages provides for the study of composition and literature throughout the High School course, but suggests more writing in the first two years than in the last two, and more reading in the last two years than in the first two. Moreover, it suggests that the Herrick and Damon be used intensively for the first few weeks, by a close study of its principles and by an application of them to subjects of oral and written composition; and then that a classic or two be studied intensively, both for the literature and for a review of the text through composition subjects based upon the classics studied. For example, the manual suggests that the Herrick and Damon be studied and applied through Chapter V. For the first month, also that Treasure Island be read through rapidly out of class; and that the second month be given to some of the selections in the Elson Reader, Eighth Grade, also to a detailed study Of Treasure Island. This plan will enable the teacher to treat the Chapters of the text, also the classics read, as a whole, and will therefore give unity to the work. It will also' enable the teacher to correlate the composition work and the literature, to apply the principles of the text as learned, and thus fix and vitalize them. This same general plan will be followed throughout the first year, except that more and more attention will be given to the classics and less and less attention to the text as we proceed in the work. In addi tion to' the intensive reading of one or more classics for each three months of the year, this plan provides for the home reading of a few classics which are grouped to include both poetry and prose and various types of literature. These extensive readings are arranged to supplement the textbook, and to awaken an interest in reading. They are also adapted to the ages of the pupils. Time is allotted throughout the work for frequent reviews. However, the teacher may wish to arrange the time differently. Reviews should be frequent and thorough; each week the work should be connected with the previous week; each day the work should be connected with that of the previous day. Often written reviews, five or ten minutes in length, at the beginning of the class hour, will awaken interest and test the pupil's preparation for the day. When sections of the textbook are completed, or when classics studied in the class are finished, review should be required. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Oral Composition The authors add a volume to the many texts on English composition, in the hope of meeting fairly the first great need of the high school student who is beginning to learn to compose. That need is to think in terms of good com position, - to regard the spoken or written theme as a whole, and not as a collection of separate sentences. The high school student is not yet mature, but still less is he a child, and he learns to write well and to speak well mainly by learning to think. This book seeks constantly to appeal to his intelligence; first, by giving him subjects within his grasp, and second, by having faith that his grasp means brains as well as memory. An old mistake was to give the student tasks beyond his power; a new mistake is to hold him too closely to the commonplace. The present authors try a middle course, but they have never felt themselves obliged to reach that middle course by exactly bisecting the difference between the two ex tremes. Much more stress than usual is laid upon oral composition, for the plain reason that much defective writing is due to defective speaking.
