Book excerpt: The Analytical-Literal Translation: Third Edition (ALT3) is the most accurate translation of the New Testament available. Its name reflects its main features. "Literal" refers to ALT3 being a word for word translation. All words in the original Greek text are translated. The original grammar is retained as much as possible. Words added for clarity are bracketed. "Analytical" refers to the detailed "analysis" done on the grammar of the text, which is then translated in a way that brings out "nuances" often missed in other translations. "Analytical" also refers to aids included within the text which enable the reader to "analyze" and understand the text. ALT3 is based on the most up-to-date and accurate Greek Text, the Byzantine Majority Text: Second Edition.

Book excerpt: The Analytical-Literal Translation of the Old Testament (Septuagint): Volume I: The Torah (ALT) is a companion to the Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament. Both are translated by Gary F. Zeolla (www.Zeolla.org). The ALT: Old Testament is available in five volumes. Most Old Testaments are based on the Hebrew text. But this Old Testament (OT) is based on the Greek Septuagint (LXX). The LXX is a third century B.C. Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The name and abbreviation comes from the tradition that 70 (or 72) Jewish scholars worked on its translation, six from each of the 12 tribes of Israel. The importance of the LXX is that it was THE Bible of the early Church. The purpose of the ALT is to provide a translation of the Greek Septuagint that will enable the reader to come as close to the Greek text as possible without having to be proficient in Greek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible is, as the name implies, a strictly literal translation of the Hebrew and Greek texts (from the Textus Receptus and Majority Text). Compiled by Robert Young in 1862, he went on to produce a revised version in 1887 based on the Westcott-Hort text which had been completed in 1885. Young died on October 14, 1888, and the publisher released a New Revised Edition in 1898. Young used the present tense in many places where other translations used the past tense- particularly in narratives. The Preface to the Second Edition states: “If a translation gives a present tense when the original gives a past, or a past when it has a present; a perfect for a future, or a future for a perfect; an a for a the, or a the for an a; an imperative for a subjunctive, or a subjunctive for an imperative; a verb for a noun, or a noun for a verb, it is clear that verbal inspiration is as much overlooked as if it had no existence. THE WORD OF GOD IS MADE VOID BY THE TRADITIONS OF MEN. [Emphasis in original.]” For example, the YLT version of Genesis begins as follows: 1. In the beginning of God’s preparing the heavens and the earth--- 2. The earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters, 3. And God saith, ‘Let light be;’ and light is. 4. And God seeth the light that it is good, and God seperateth between the light and the darkness, 5. And God alled to the light ‘Day,’ and to the darkness He hath called ‘Night;’ and there is an evening, and there is a morning---day one. Young's Literal Translation in the 1898 Edition also consistently renders the Hebrew Tetragrammaton (the four Hebrew letters usually transliterated YHWH or JHVH that form a biblical proper name of God) throughout the Old Covenant/Testament as "Jehovah", instead of the traditional practice of "LORD" in small capitals, which was used in editions prior to 1898. Young's usage of English present tense rather than past tense has been supported by scholars ranging from the medieval Jewish rabbi Rashi (who advised, "If you are going to interpret [this passage] in its plain sense, interpret it thus: At the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth, when the earth was (or the earth being) unformed and void . . . God said, ‘Let there be light.’") to Richard Elliott Friedman in his translation of the Five Books in "The Bible with Sources Revealed" (2002). There is a linked Table of Contents for each book and chapter.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the ALTD is to provide a translation of the Greek New Testament that will enable the reader to come as close to the Greek text as possible without having to be proficient in Greek. The name of the ALTD reflects this purpose. "Literal" refers to the ALTD being a word for word translation. Any words added for clarity are bracketed. "Analytical" refers to the detailed "analysis" done on the grammar of the text. The grammar is then translated in a way which brings out "nuances" of the original text that are often missed in traditional translations. In addition, "analytical" refers to the aids that are included in 4,300 footnotes which enable the reader to "analyze" and understand the text. The ALTD is based on the Byzantine Majority Text. With being both a literal and a readable version, the ALTD is the ideal Bible version for reading the Bible in both a "study" and a "devotional" manner. It is also ideal for public reading, quoting, or for the person new to the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You hold in your hands ten years of my life. Ten summers, ten autumns, ten winters, and ten springs. My life runs in cycles, odd to be sure, but cycles none the less. Some are daily. Tiny little spirals so tightly wound that they resemble a thread of time weaving the days together. I come alive in the twilight. Late night is spent in waking dreams and long conversations with myself. Morning hopefully finds me sleeping, but as often as not, I am doing my penance to my debtors or fretting over something or other. Afternoon is a time of long waits. I am always waiting away the afternoon, looking forward to twilight's return. Some cycles are seasonal. Autumn has always been a time of rebirth for me. Winter a time of romance and dreams brought on by solitude. My life seems to always come unwound in the spring and summer is spent whiling away the lazy days awaiting falls return. Then there are the ten-year cycles. They are not so clearly defined. This book is a collection of poetry written during one of those ten-year cycles. It began in the Fall of 1988, with a knock at my door. It ended in the Spring of 1997, with the closing of another door. As I look back from this vantage point at all of my impostures during that decade, I'll be damned if I know anyone of them any better than I know the ones parading forth as I write this. But then, this isn't a self-help book--it's a book of poetry. Should you recognize anyone inside these pages it is because we are all impostures, pretending to be who we really are.

The second section consists of "Glossary and Translation Notes" which explain the reasons for how important words are translated in the ALT. The third section is an eight-part "Grammatical Renderings" section. This section explains the reasons for the unique translation of Greek tenses seen in the ALT. This section is detailed enough to be used as a primer on Greek grammar. The fourth section contains lists of "Significant Textual Variants" and "Alternate Byzantine Text Readings." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament of the Holy Bible is different from any other version of the Bible. What makes it unique is the Analytical-Literal Translation (ALT) enables the reader to come closer to what the New Testament writers originally wrote in a far greater way than any other version. It does so be providing four unique features: The ALT is a very literal translation of the Greek New Testament. All words in the original text are translated...nothing is omitted. The grammar of the Greek text is translated in a way that brings out "nuances" of the original text. The ALT is based on the newest and most accurate Greek text, the Byzantine Majority Text. This Greek text is the most exact reproduction of the original manuscripts possible. The ALT includes aids in brackets within the text that help the reader to better understand the text. These include: Alternative translations for words and phrases. The figurative meanings of words and phrases. Modern-day equivalents for measurement and monetary units and time designations. Explanatory notes. Now a few available versions might provide one or two of the above features, but no version incorporates three of these features, let alone all four. So if you are serious about studying the Bible, wanting to know as exactly as possible what the original writers actually wrote, the ALT is the version to be using for your Bible studies.

Why do some versions contain words, phrases, and even entire verses that other versions omit? Which Bible versions are most reliable? This book contains extensive discussions on why the author believes either a literal or a formal equivalence ("word-for-word") translation principle is the best method to use for translating the Bible. These principles of translating are contrasted with the dynamic equivalence ("phrase for phrase") and paraphrase methods seen in many modern Bible versions. This book includes detailed discussions on why the author believes the Majority Text is the most accurate of the three Greek texts used in Bible translation. This book also contains an extended section critiquing the claims of "KJV-onlyists."In addressing these various issues, Differences Between Bible Versions compares forty different versions of the Bible.

The ALT is contained in seven volumes. They are:Volume I - The Torah (Genesis to Deuteronomy)Volume II - The Historical Books (Joshua to Esther)Volume III - The Poetic Books (Job to Song of Solomon)Volume IV - The Prophetic Books (Isaiah to Malachi)Volume V - The Apocryphal/ Deuterocanonical BooksVolume VI - The New TestamentVolume VII - The Apostolic FathersThe purpose of the ALT is to provide a translation of all of these books that will enable the English reader to come as close to the Greek texts as possible without having to be proficient in Greek. And the name of the ALT reflects this purpose."Literal" refers to the fact that the ALT is a word for word translation. All words in the original text are translated--nothing is omitted. The original grammar of the text is retained as much as possible. Any words added for clarity are bracketed, so nothing is added without it being indicated as such."Analytical" refers to the detailed "analysis" done on the grammar of the text. The grammar is then translated in a way which brings out "nuances" of the original text that are often missed in traditional translations. In addition, "analytical" refers to the aids that are included within the text which enable the reader to "analyze" and understand the text. Such information is bracketed. It includes the following:1. Alternative translations for words and phrases.2. Possible figurative meanings or paraphrases of words and phrases.3. Modern-day equivalents for measurement and monetary units and time designations.4. Explanatory notes.5. Cross references."Translation" refers to the conversion of the original Greek text into English. Modern-day English is used, and despite its literalness, the ALT is a relatively easy to read and understand.Versions Notes:The version of the ALT: OT published in 2023 is a corrected text, not a full new edition. Only minor corrections have been made, plus the cover and appendixes have been updated. The "Regular" paperback and hardback versions of the ALT: OT are printed on 8-1/2"x11" pages in double columns using Times New Roman 10-point font. But a Personal Size Version is also available . It is printed on 6" x 9" pages in single columns using the same font size. Many requested this smaller page size, so I am making it available. However, due to the smaller page size, the number of pages and thus the cost of the book is greater.
