My life runs in cycles, odd to be sure, but cycles none the less. Some are daily. Tiny little spirals so tightly wound that they resemble a thread of time weaving the days together. I come alive in the twilight. Late night is spent in waking dreams and long conversations with myself. Morning hopefully finds me sleeping, but as often as not, I am doing my penance to my debtors or fretting over something or other. Afternoon is a time of long waits. I am always waiting away the afternoon, looking forward to twilight's return. Some cycles are seasonal. Autumn has always been a time of rebirth for me. Winter a time of romance and dreams brought on by solitude. My life seems to always come unwound in the spring and summer is spent whiling away the lazy days awaiting falls return. Then there are the ten-year cycles. They are not so clearly defined. This book is a collection of poetry written during one of those ten-year cycles. It began in the Fall of 1988, with a knock at my door. It ended in the Spring of 1997, with the closing of another door. As I look back from this vantage point at all of my impostures during that decade, I'll be damned if I know anyone of them any better than I know the ones parading forth as I write this. But then, this isn't a self-help book--it's a book of poetry. Should you recognize anyone inside these pages it is because we are all impostures, pretending to be who we really are.

Book excerpt: Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible is, as the name implies, a strictly literal translation of the Hebrew and Greek texts (from the Textus Receptus and Majority Text). Compiled by Robert Young in 1862, he went on to produce a revised version in 1887 based on the Westcott-Hort text which had been completed in 1885. Young died on October 14, 1888, and the publisher released a New Revised Edition in 1898. Young used the present tense in many places where other translations used the past tense- particularly in narratives. The Preface to the Second Edition states: “If a translation gives a present tense when the original gives a past, or a past when it has a present; a perfect for a future, or a future for a perfect; an a for a the, or a the for an a; an imperative for a subjunctive, or a subjunctive for an imperative; a verb for a noun, or a noun for a verb, it is clear that verbal inspiration is as much overlooked as if it had no existence. THE WORD OF GOD IS MADE VOID BY THE TRADITIONS OF MEN. [Emphasis in original.]” For example, the YLT version of Genesis begins as follows: 1. In the beginning of God’s preparing the heavens and the earth--- 2. The earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters, 3. And God saith, ‘Let light be;’ and light is. 4. And God seeth the light that it is good, and God seperateth between the light and the darkness, 5. And God alled to the light ‘Day,’ and to the darkness He hath called ‘Night;’ and there is an evening, and there is a morning---day one. Young's Literal Translation in the 1898 Edition also consistently renders the Hebrew Tetragrammaton (the four Hebrew letters usually transliterated YHWH or JHVH that form a biblical proper name of God) throughout the Old Covenant/Testament as "Jehovah", instead of the traditional practice of "LORD" in small capitals, which was used in editions prior to 1898. Young's usage of English present tense rather than past tense has been supported by scholars ranging from the medieval Jewish rabbi Rashi (who advised, "If you are going to interpret [this passage] in its plain sense, interpret it thus: At the beginning of the creation of heaven and earth, when the earth was (or the earth being) unformed and void . . . God said, ‘Let there be light.’") to Richard Elliott Friedman in his translation of the Five Books in "The Bible with Sources Revealed" (2002). They were ultimately rejected for the canon, but all of these APF books were popular in the early centuries of the Church. They give insight into the mindset of the early Church shortly after the apostles and provide background to the NT. As such, they are very much worth reading. However, most Christians today are unaware of these APF books, and there are only a few English translations of the Greek language they were originally written in. To remedy these deficits, this Analytical-Literal Translation of the Apostolic Fathers is being presented to the English-speaking Christian public in hopes it will enrich understanding of the NT and of the time immediately after the apostles. The purpose of the ALT is to provide a translation of these APF books that will enable the English reader to come as close to the Greek texts as possible without having to be proficient in Greek. Book excerpt: This book is a translation of the Greek New Testament with the following features: 1) Each potential parsing of each verb, participle, and infinitive presented in an interlinear format 2) English tenses used that match the Greek tenses 3) Greek nouns that are not made into English verbs (and vice versa) 4) Brackets indicating the words added into the translation 5) Two parsing keys and a page of symbols, abbreviations, and words As a graduate of a non-denominational Bible college and an inter-denominational seminary, the author did not play favorites with any theological school of thought. He strove to find a balance between Greek accuracy and English readability. The following Greek texts were used: the United Bible Societies’ Greek New Testament, 4th Edition and the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum, 26th edition. The author is able to overcome the poor quality of the Greek texts used by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English translators. Yet, it is very difficult for Bible teachers and Pastors to overcome the traditional words used in these early translations that are so very misleading to English Bible readers. How were “experts” in Latin able to translate their Greek text (and Hebrew) and still be given credit today for being “conservatives?” Many Greek students think that the Greek words have only one parsing (example: mood, tense, voice, etc.). Unfortunately, some preachers speak dogmatically about a Greek word while leaving out the other potential parsing that that particular verb may have. Please honor God’s inerrant, infallible, and God-breathed Word by doing a professional job of research and study. Consider the eternal consequences for all speaking and all listening!
