Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Book of Light Opera Lord Harewood's comments in his preface to The Complete Opera Boo/r on selectivity apply equally to The Complete Boo/c of Light Opera. It is obviously impossible, if the book is to be kept within manageable proportions, to include all opere-ttas that people might see or hear, indeed might have seen or heard, for some of the appeal of the present volume, to the older generation of theatre goers at any rate, will be bound up with nostalgia. My selection is limited to the lightest genre of Light Opera. I have deliberately excluded Ope'ra Comique (delibes, Adam, Auber), Singspiel (mozart, Lortzing, Nicolai) and such light Operas as Vaughan Williams' The Poisoned Kiss, Arthur Benjamin's The Prima Donna, Ethel Smyth's The Boatswain's Mate, and Ballad Opera. Nor does my American colleague, David Ewen, include such operas as Menotti's The Telephone and Amelia Goes to the Ball, or earlier operas by composers like Walter Damrosch, Charles Wakefield, Cadman and Deems Taylor. But one night, in a dark and filthy alley, fate sent him another reason to hope. In the midst of his deepest despair, he found a purpose far greater than himself and in the process discovered the true meaning of happiness. And now, with his heart again dreaming, he had a plan; a plan that would give him a life beyond his wildest fantasies. Book Synopsis The Standard Light Operas by : George P. Upton
Download or read book The Standard Light Operas written by George P. Upton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Light Operas: Their Plots and Their Music The present volume, "The Standard Light Operas," has been prepared not only with the hope that it may supply a popular want in these days when the light opera is so much in vogue, but also with the purpose of completing the series which the author has already compiled, including the opera, oratorio, cantata, and symphony. It has been somewhat difficult to select from the "embarrassment of riches" in the material offered by the profusion of operettas, musical comedies, and legitimate light operas which have been produced during the last few years, and which are still turned out with almost bewildering rapidity. Still more difficult is it to determine accurately those among them which are standard. A few of the lighter works which are contained in the original edition of the "Standard Operas" have been recast, as they properly belong in a work of this kind, and as they may answer the needs of those who have not the former volume.
