Book excerpt: Building on evergreen principles, concepts, and strategies of performance and rewards management, the second edition of Rewarding Performance is a clear guide to how strategies must be adjusted to align with new realities, and programs revised to ensure their effectiveness. Appendices dealing with the important and increased reliance on evidence-based management have been added, to provide insights into how evidence can be applied in performance and rewards management. Another major development addressed in the second edition is the rise of the "gig economy," which has challenged organizations to brand themselves as employers of choice. This new edition answers the challenge by considering the impact of this trend on performance and rewards management throughout the book, and expanding the content related to managing non-employees. The second edition also includes a new appendix, providing a fundamental grounding in the use of statistics relevant to performance and rewards management. A chapter on contractors has been added and material on cognitive bias explores why managing people must be understood as different from managing quantitative measures. Updated figures and PowerPoint presentations make the new edition of Rewarding Performance an essential resource for instructors and students of human resource management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no HR-related topic more popular in the business press than performance management (PM). There has been an explosion in writing on this topic in the past 5 years, condemning it as a failure and calling for fundamental change. The vast majority of organizations use the same basic process which I call “Last Generation Performance Management” or PM 1.0 for short. Despite widespread agreement that PM 1.0 is failing, few companies have abandoned it or made fundamental changes to it. While everyone agrees it is broken, few agree on how to fix it. Companies continue to tinker with their systems, making incremental changes every few years with no lasting improvement in effectiveness. Employees continue to achieve amazing things in organizations every day, despite this process not because of it. Nothing has worked because organizations, business leaders and HR professionals focus on PM practices instead of the fundamental purpose of PM and the paradigms, assumptions, and beliefs that underlie the practices. Companies ask their performance management process to do too many things and it fails at all of them as a result. At the foundation of PM 1.0 practices is the ideology of a meritocracy and paradigms rooted in standard economic and psychological theories. While these theories were adequate explanations for motivation and behavior in the 19th and 20th centuries, they fail to account for the increasingly complex nature of organizations and their environments today. Despite the ineffectiveness of PM 1.0, there are powerful forces holding it in place. Information on rigorous, evidence-based recommendations is crowded out by benchmarking information, case studies of high-profile companies, and other propaganda coming from HR think tanks and consultants. Business leaders and HR professionals learn about common practices not effective practices. This book confronts the traditional dogma, paradigms, and practices of PM 1.0 and holds them up to the bright light of scientific scrutiny. It encourages HR professionals and business leaders to abandon PM 1.0 and it offers up a more appropriate purpose for PM, alternative paradigms to guide them and practical solutions that are better supported by scientific research, referred to as “Next Generation Performance Management” or PM 2.0 for short.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 5, University of Cooperative Education Mannheim (International Business Administration), course: Leadership, 4 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This essay deals with the reward management of companies. Compensation and remuneration are important issues in human resource management. In the following chapters, we will describe the reward management in detail in order to give a basic understanding about this topic. First, the different levels of remuneration are presented which is a necessary background information. Furthermore we would like to concentrate on the practical work in the human resource department. We will describe how the operational tasks in compensation management are separated between the staff and how these tasks changed in the last decades due to changes in the business environment. In the following part we will name and explain more in detail important factors which influence the compensation and rewarding strategy. We add a short excursus concerning legal minimum wages. This topic is one significant force to control and manipulate the strategic decisions in the reward and compensation strategy. Moreover we will focus on performance related payment systems. This issue became more and more important in the last year and there are many employees who argue against such a system. We will explain it and afterwards we would like to name some arguments which are against this kind of a structure. Finally we will present a practical example of compensation management. We have chosen the global-acting company BASF because we could organise some background information and we think that this company uses some of the strategic tools we described in their compensation management. Not every company is willing to show their strategies to the public because they think that their competitors will profit from this knowle

Book excerpt: Part One identifies common principles that underlie sound performance and rewards management. Chapter One sets the stage for defining these principles by describing how a human resource management strategy is derived from the organizational context and strategy. Chapter Two presents common principles for effectively managing performance. Chapter Three develops principles that should be incorporated into rewards management strategies. Part Two explores the development and execution of "local" performance and rewards management strategies, which can be utilized for different segments of the workforce. The segments of the workforce addressed here are: Executives (Chapter Four), Sales Personnel (Chapter Five), Professionals (Chapter Six), Operating & Administrative Support Personnel (Chapter Seven), Teams (Chapter Eight) and global workforces (Chapter Nine). Part Three addresses how programs to support the local strategies can be developed and how they can be integrated to produce alignment. Guidelines for effective implementation, administration and evaluation are presented. Chapter Ten examines some of the contextual and environmental factors that impact performance and rewards management for public sector and not-for-profit organization workforces. Chapter Eleven focuses on integrating local strategies and executing strategies through program development, implementation and administration. Chapter Twelve provides a model for strategy and program evaluation.
