Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series entitled, Compendium of In-Vivo Monitoring in Real-time Molecular Neuroscience. Its purpose is to provide a cross-section of research addressing monitoring in the rodent, and in some cases, the human brain.Detailed understanding of the neurobiology of the brain is demanding and involves increasingly wider scope of talent ranging from physicists, neurobiologists, chemists, molecular biologists and bioengineers. Coming from varied backgrounds, they do not necessarily understand how to formulate functional issues in a mutually understandable way. This aim of this book is to provide information which can serve as a starting point for understanding such a complex topic. The authors provide 'tutorial' writing for specialists, as well as material understandable to a wide audience including neuroscientists, those interested in drug discovery, and those using such measurements for diagnosis purposes.

Volume 2 continues to provide current approaches to real time measurements of essential species in the central nervous system. It describes microdialysis, a sampling technique, which facilitates the removal of small volumes of solution containing the analyte(s) of interest which can be subsequently separated by chromatography and analyzed by a range of techniques. These include electrochemistry, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence and mass spectroscopy. This approach affords the opportunity to measure a range of targets in real-time thus providing access to pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics measurements affording the possibility of measuring the disappearance of a drug after administration and the subsequent appearance of metabolites. Microdialysis further affords the ability to sample peptides and proteins of neurobiological interest. Consistent with the goals of Volume 1, Volume 2 seeks to provide for scientists in the field of neurobiology a base of bioanalytical techniques that may not be familiar to them. Specific examples are provided and the fundamental basis of the technique is also covered."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For molecules that are not directly electroactive, it is necessary to modify a microelectrode by grafting polymeric or enzymatic membranes capable of translating a local concentration into an electrical current, which is a concept referred to as biosensing. In Microelectrode Biosensors, experts in the field cover the topic of electrochemical biosensor technology as applied to the neurosciences. The volume opens with a section addressing the specific issue of manufacturing biosensors that can be implanted in the central nervous system for neurotransmitter detection, and it then continues with sections on recent studies where biosensors have made a difference in bringing a new level of understanding of signaling mechanisms in neuroscience as well as recent developments in biosensor technology that have not yet been applied to implantable microelectrodes but may have great potential. Written for the Neuromethods series, this work contains the kind of detailed descriptions and implementation advice necessary to achieve successful results. Focused and cutting-edge, Microelectrode Biosensors serves to inspire the wider neuroscience and physiology community to adopt these powerful methods in their own applications in order to move the field forward with the widespread advances that will most likely flow from the adoption of biosensing as part of the standard laboratory toolkit.

This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume in this tripartite series on Brain Augmentation is entitled “From Clinical Applications to Ethical Issues and Futuristic Ideas”. Many of the articles within this volume deal with translational efforts taking the results of experiments on laboratory animals and applying them to humans. In many cases, these interventions are intended to help people with disabilities in such a way so as to either restore or extend brain function. Traditionally, therapies in brain augmentation have included electrical and pharmacological techniques. In contrast, some of the techniques discussed in this volume add specificity by targeting select neural populations. This approach opens the door to where and how to promote the best interventions. Along the way, results have empowered the medical profession by expanding their understanding of brain function. Articles in this volume relate novel clinical solutions for a host of neurological and psychiatric conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, epilepsy, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), traumatic brain injury, and disorders of consciousness. In disease, symptoms and signs denote a departure from normal function. Brain augmentation has now been used to target both the core symptoms that provide specificity in the diagnosis of a disease, as well as other constitutional symptoms that may greatly handicap the individual. The volume provides a report on the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in ASD with reported improvements of core deficits (i.e., executive functions). TMS in this regard departs from the present-day trend towards symptomatic treatment that leaves unaltered the root cause of the condition. In diseases, such as schizophrenia, brain augmentation approaches hold promise to avoid lengthy pharmacological interventions that are usually riddled with side effects or those with limiting returns as in the case of Parkinson’s disease. Brain stimulation can also be used to treat auditory verbal hallucination, visuospatial (hemispatial) neglect, and pain in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. The brain acts as a telecommunication transceiver wherein different bandwidth of frequencies (brainwave oscillations) transmit information. Their baseline levels correlate with certain behavioral states. The proper integration of brain oscillations provides for the phenomenon of binding and central coherence. Brain augmentation may foster the normalization of brain oscillations in nervous system disorders. These techniques hold the promise of being applied remotely (under the supervision of medical personnel), thus overcoming the obstacle of travel in order to obtain healthcare. At present, traditional thinking would argue the possibility of synergism among different modalities of brain augmentation as a way of increasing their overall effectiveness and improving therapeutic selectivity. Thinking outside of the box would also provide for the implementation of brain-to-brain interfaces where techniques, proper to artificial intelligence, could allow us to surpass the limits of natural selection or enable communications between several individual brains sharing memories, or even a global brain capable of self-organization. Not all brains are created equal. Brain stimulation studies suggest large individual variability in response that may affect overall recovery/treatment, or modify desired effects of a given intervention. The subject’s age, gender, hormonal levels may affect an individual’s cortical excitability. In addition, this volume discusses the role of social interactions in the operations of augmenting technologies. Finally, augmenting methods could be applied to modulate consciousness, even though its neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Finally, this volume should be taken as a debate on social, moral and ethical issues on neurotechnologies. Brain enhancement may transform the individual into someone or something else. These techniques bypass the usual routes of accommodation to environmental exigencies that exalted our personal fortitude: learning, exercising, and diet. This will allow humans to preselect desired characteristics and realize consequent rewards without having to overcome adversity through more laborious means. The concern is that humans may be playing God, and the possibility of an expanding gap in social equity where brain enhancements may be selectively available to the wealthier individuals. These issues are discussed by a number of articles in this volume. Also discussed are the relationship between the diminishment and enhancement following the application of brain-augmenting technologies, the problem of “mind control” with BMI technologies, free will the duty to use cognitive enhancers in high-responsibility professions, determining the population of people in need of brain enhancement, informed public policy, cognitive biases, and the hype caused by the development of brain- augmenting approaches.

Book excerpt: Emerging Cognitive Neuroscience and Related Technologies, from the National Research Council, identifies and explores several specific research areas that have implications for U.S. national security, and should therefore be monitored consistently by the intelligence community. These areas include: neurophysiological advances in detecting and measuring indicators of psychological states and intentions of individuals the development of drugs or technologies that can alter human physical or cognitive abilities advances in real-time brain imaging breakthroughs in high-performance computing and neuronal modeling that could allow researchers to develop systems which mimic functions of the human brain, particularly the ability to organize disparate forms of data. As these fields continue to grow, it will be imperative that the intelligence community be able to identify scientific advances relevant to national security when they occur. To do so will require adequate funding, intelligence analysts with advanced training in science and technology, and increased collaboration with the scientific community, particularly academia. A key tool for the intelligence community, this book will also be a useful resource for the health industry, the military, and others with a vested interest in technologies such as brain imaging and cognitive or physical enhancers.
